Between Std VI and Std X, science stops being a single subject of observations and splits into physics, chemistry and biology, each with its own numericals, equations and diagrams. In Madurai children meet that change through the Tamil Nadu State Board books, in Tamil or English medium, through NCERT for CBSE, or through the texts an ICSE school picks. The Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu, conducts the Std X public examination for State Board students, the SSLC, which is held in March/June sessions. In the Directorate's SSLC timetable, science is a Part III subject together with mathematics and social science. The Directorate also has a regional office in Madurai. We do not set out the science paper's design on this page; the Directorate publishes it and may revise it, so families and tutors should confirm the current scheme on dge.tn.gov.in.
The useful test is practical. Can the tutor teach from the state textbook, chapter by chapter, in your child's medium? Will practice come from official model or earlier papers where the Directorate provides them, rather than from a CBSE guide? And will diagrams, units and balanced equations get the same drilling they would for any other board? A tutor who says yes to all three is a sound choice. The three-hour board paper carries 80 marks. The school adds 20 more, in four equal parts of 5: periodic tests, multiple assessment, the portfolio and practical-based subject enrichment. Biology holds 30 of the board's 80; chemistry and physics hold 25 each.

Count the questions in CBSE's 2026-27 sample paper and you reach 39. Twenty single-mark items come first, some multiple-choice and some assertion–reason. Six two-mark short answers follow, then seven of three marks, three four-mark questions resting on a case or a source, and finally three five-mark long answers. A tutor should train each block differently. One-mark items need quick, exact recall. A short answer needs one distinct point per mark. With a case, the passage or table is read first and the questions second. A long answer is built round a diagram or an equation with four or five clear points. Sample papers with their marking schemes appear on cbseacademic ahead of the exam, and nothing is better for practice.
Three areas are kept off the 2026-27 board paper and marked inside school: evolution; the way elements are placed in the periodic table; and the trio of electric motor, electromagnetic induction and generator. Because internal marks depend on them and Class 11 picks them up again, a tutor should teach them fully while saving revision weeks for examined chapters. Board questions also draw on the 14 experiments listed in the curriculum, so the practical file belongs in revision.
Every CBSE Class 10 student sits the compulsory main exam, and eligible students may take a second, optional sitting to improve as many as three subjects, science among them. Dates for 2027 were not out at the time of writing, so follow cbse.gov.in and treat the main exam as the one that counts. The board-year planner sets out the months.
Class 9 now runs on NCERT's new Exploration textbook in CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum. The annual paper stays at 80, with 20 internal, and its four units weigh in as follows: matter and how it behaves takes 27, the living world 25, motion with force, work and sound 23, and the Earth as a system only 5. At ICSE Class 10, CISCE examines Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three separate papers, each with its own internal assessment, and schools choose their own textbooks within the syllabus. A tutor therefore works from the books your child actually has and from CISCE specimen papers, and pays close attention to exact definitions and complete numericals. Some families need help with just one of the three papers, often from Class 9. ICSE science tutors are fewer than CBSE or State Board ones, so ask early; online lessons widen the field.
