Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

For a Madurai student on the state syllabus, two public examinations shape the school years: the SSLC at the end of Class 10 and the Higher Secondary examination, the "+2", at the end of Class 12. The Directorate of Government Examinations sets and conducts both, and one of its regional offices is in Madurai. The most useful thing a home tutor can do is teach to the papers the Directorate actually sets, and those papers are public. This page reads them for you: how the March 2026 SSLC maths and science papers were divided, how +2 papers differ by subject, how the examination season runs, what the Directorate offers after results, which scholarship tests it runs for younger children, and how tutors reach homes on the south and west side of the city. Check every point against dge.tn.gov.in before you build a year around it.
Standard X and Standard XII board examinations for State Board students are held by the Directorate of Government Examinations, and its mark certificates are the documents students carry into higher education and jobs. Since a government order of February 2011, a single State Board of School Examinations has stood behind both levels, formed by merging the earlier Board of Secondary Education with the Board of Higher Secondary Examinations. The Directorate works through seven regional offices, and Madurai is one of them, alongside Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Chennai, Cuddalore and Vellore. Those offices handle the logistics of each season: moving examination stationery, distributing funds for conducting the examinations and sending out mark certificates. Beyond the SSLC and +2, the Directorate also runs the ESLC for private candidates, technical and teacher-education examinations, and three scholarship tests discussed further down.
The Directorate lists March and June sessions for both the SSLC and the Higher Secondary examination, and it issues a timetable for each season that every State Board family plans around: practical examinations come first, then the theory papers, with the SSLC usually finishing after the +2 papers. Exact dates change every year, so check the current timetable on dge.tn.gov.in rather than relying on last year's dates or a forwarded message.
For a tutor this means two things. Practical records and practical preparation must be finished before the practical examinations begin, not squeezed in afterwards. And a Class 12 student also preparing for national entrances has board practicals and theory papers stacked close together, so entrance work should be lighter then.
The Directorate's question bank holds the full set of March 2026 SSLC papers. Each was printed in a Tamil and English version, and the maths and science papers both ran for three hours in four parts.
| Part | Mathematics (100 marks) | Science (75 marks) |
|---|---|---|
| I | 14 one-mark multiple-choice questions, all compulsory | 12 one-mark multiple-choice questions, all compulsory |
| II | 2-mark questions: pick ten, but the numbered fixed question has no choice | 2-mark questions: pick seven, including the fixed one |
| III | 5-mark questions: pick ten, including the fixed one (50 marks) | 4-mark questions: pick seven, including the fixed one |
| IV | Two 8-mark questions, each with an either/or choice: a geometric construction and a graph | No choice of question: three 7-mark answers, with diagrams drawn wherever needed |
Three lessons follow. First, half the maths paper sits in Part III, so a student must be able to set out a full 5-mark solution neatly and quickly, ten times over. Second, Part IV in maths is entirely drawing: in 2026 one question offered constructing a triangle similar to a given one, and the other offered graphing a quadratic or a linear relationship. Instructions asked for diagrams in pencil, so practice should use pencil, compass and graph sheet under exam conditions. Third, Parts II and III each contain one fixed question, so skipping a chapter is a gamble that can cost marks outright. In science, the 7-mark answers and their diagrams carry 21 marks, which rewards a student who can draw the textbook's figures cleanly from memory. Subject help is on our maths and science pages for Madurai, and English on English home tutors in Madurai.
The Higher Secondary course has three parts: Part I is a language paper, Part II is English, and Part III is the student's chosen group. Every Part III subject examined in 2025-26 appears on the timetable; sorted loosely:
Two details save confusion when you ask for a tutor. Business Mathematics and Statistics is its own paper, not the science group's Mathematics, so ask for a tutor who has taught it. And a science student may take Biology as one paper or Botany and Zoology as two; say which. The Madurai physics, chemistry and biology pages cover the science group, and our guide to choosing a board and stream helps before Class 11.
The March 2026 second-year papers fall into three shapes, all of them three hours long:
| Shape | Subjects (examples) | How the marks are laid out |
|---|---|---|
| 90 marks | Mathematics, Accountancy, Commerce, Economics, History | Opens with 20 one-mark items; then seven chosen 2-mark answers and seven chosen 3-mark answers, a fixed question in each set; closes with seven 5-mark answers worth 35 |
| 70 marks | Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology | Opens with 15 one-mark items; then six chosen 2-mark answers and six chosen 3-mark answers, again with a fixed question in each set; closes with five 5-mark answers worth 25 |
| 70 marks in two halves | Biology | A botany half and a zoology half of 35 marks each, every half with one-mark, 2-mark, 3-mark and 5-mark questions |
In a 90-mark paper, the long-answer section alone is worth more than a third of the total, so the habit of writing complete, well-set-out solutions is worth more than speed on short items. In the 70-mark sciences, the one-mark section is worth 15, which rewards close reading of the textbook. A good +2 tutor plans both: short-question drills and full written answers, every week.
On the 2025-26 timetable, the +1 public examination carried the note "for 2018 to 2025 arrear candidates only". Families with older children may remember Class 11 differently, so ask your child's school how Class 11 is being assessed for their batch. Either way, a tutor should teach Class 11 thoroughly, because the +2 papers build directly on what is learned that year.
The Directorate's question bank holds the March SSLC, first-year and second-year papers for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, and a separate page carries sample question papers. A sensible routine is to work through them backwards: use the oldest papers chapter by chapter during the year, keep the two most recent sets untouched, and sit those as full timed papers in the final weeks, marked against the four-part structure. A tutor who arrives at the demo already familiar with these papers is a good sign.
After each examination the Directorate posts notices on its portal for downloading a scanned copy of the answer script and for applying for re-totalling or revaluation. Students who fail a paper in the March or April session get a second chance in a special supplementary examination in June or July; from the June/July 2012 round onwards, the number of failed subjects no longer limits who may sit it. In 2026 the SSLC supplementary was in July, and the Higher Secondary one in June and July. The gap between results and that sitting is short, so if you want tuition for it, book as soon as the marks are out. Private candidates should note that SSLC science practicals need advance enrolment, announced on the same portal.
Each question paper carries Tamil and English side by side, so every candidate reads both. A Tamil-medium student should answer with the terms used in the Tamil textbook; an English-medium student needs the English textbook's own wording, not a near synonym. Tell us the medium when you request a tutor. Explanations can happen in either language, but written practice should always be in the medium your child will use in the hall. Students heading for national entrances after +2 can read our JEE and NEET pages for Madurai, which discuss the language question for those papers.
Eligibility details change, so read the current notification for each on the Directorate's portal. A maths tutor can add reasoning and mental-ability practice for an eligible child, and the question bank holds earlier NMMS, NTSE and TRUSTS papers.
| Year | Main aim | Typical rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Class 9 | Keep pace with school in maths and science; begin construction and graph practice; neat labelled diagrams | Two sessions a week |
| Class 10 (SSLC) | Part-by-part drill on the four-part papers; the compulsory questions; past March papers timed; practical preparation before February | Two or three sessions a week |
| Class 11 (+1) | Thorough grounding in the Part III group, plus whatever the school assesses | One session per subject |
| Class 12 (+2) | Full timed papers; complete long answers; practical records; any entrance plan | Two sessions per core subject before the papers |
The Vaigai splits Madurai into two near-equal halves, so we first look for tutors on your own bank and in your own zone. Six localities as examples:
For SSLC, the drawing work (compass constructions, graph sheets, science diagrams) is the strongest argument for a tutor who comes home and watches the pencil. At +2, a mix works for many students: the same tutor visits once a week and teaches a second session online. Every locality is on the Madurai home tutors page, and the Madurai home tuition guide covers timing in each zone.
Your shortlist has two or three matched tutors, and each fee appears before you book. The first lesson costs nothing, and so does changing tutor later. Every tutor who joins goes through an ID check. If your child is on another board, see CBSE or ICSE and ISC home tutors in Madurai.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. A State Board fee in Madurai shifts with the class, how many subjects are involved and how far the tutor travels. Read the pricing guide and our article on home tuition fees in Madurai.
To start, tell us the class, the +1 or +2 group, the medium, the subjects, your locality with a landmark and when your child is free, and book a free demo. You can also browse tutor profiles; teachers of State Board subjects can find requests on Madurai tuition jobs. Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, see State Board tutors in Chennai.
For a Tamil Nadu State Board tutor in Madurai, send the class, medium, any +1 or +2 group, subjects, your locality with a landmark and free times. We send two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.
For Madurai State Board students, the March 2026 SSLC maths paper ran three hours for 100 marks in four parts. Part I had 14 one-mark questions; Parts II and III asked for ten 2-mark and ten 5-mark answers, each set with one fixed question. Part IV had two 8-mark drawing questions, a construction and a graph, drawn in pencil.
Tamil Nadu +2 papers differ by subject for Madurai students: in March 2026, Mathematics, Accountancy, Commerce and Economics were 90-mark papers ending in seven 5-mark answers worth 35. Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology were 70 marks, ending in five 5-mark answers. Biology was also 70, split into botany and zoology halves of 35.
For Madurai State Board students, the 2025-26 timetable marked the +1 public examination for arrear candidates from 2018 to 2025 only. Ask your child's school how their batch is assessed in Class 11. Either way, a tutor should teach Class 11 thoroughly, because the +2 papers build directly on that year's work.
For Madurai families, Tamil Nadu State Board practical examinations come first and theory papers follow, with the +2 papers usually ahead of the SSLC. Dates change every year, so check the current timetable on dge.tn.gov.in. Tutors should finish practical records and preparation before the practicals begin.
Yes, a Madurai State Board tutor can teach a Tamil-medium student; mention the medium in your request. Each paper carries Tamil and English side by side, and a Tamil-medium candidate should use the Tamil textbook's vocabulary. Explanations can be in either language, but written practice belongs in the medium your child will write in.
A Madurai State Board student can download the scanned answer script and apply for re-totalling or revaluation through notices on the Directorate's portal after results. Anyone who fails in the March or April session can sit a special supplementary examination in June or July, however many subjects they failed. Book tuition for it as soon as marks are out.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. A Tamil Nadu State Board fee in Madurai shifts with the class, how many subjects are involved and how far the tutor travels. Tutors set their own fees, and you see each one before the free demo.
SSLC tuition in Madurai is usually stronger at home, because compass constructions, graph sheets and science diagrams need a tutor watching the pencil. At +2, many students mix formats: the same tutor visits once a week and teaches a second session online. Homes on the city's edge, such as Thirunagar, can use online for specialist subjects.
A Madurai tutor should use the Directorate's question bank, which holds March SSLC, first-year and second-year papers for 2023 to 2026, working backwards. Use older papers chapter by chapter during the year, keep the two most recent sets untouched, and sit those as full timed papers in the final weeks.
