Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Madurai is compact compared with a metro, but it is still split by the Vaigai, and the bridges and big junctions fill up at school and office hours. A tutor who lives on the other bank, or at the far end of the Thirumangalam road, may be the right teacher and still the wrong person to visit you three evenings a week. Online tuition removes that problem, and it opens up teachers from anywhere in Tamil Nadu or the rest of India. This guide from the NXTutors Academic Team covers when online is the better choice for a Madurai student and when it is not, how online lessons are arranged through NXTutors, the medium question for Tamil-medium students, what to set up at home, and how to combine online lessons with home visits from the same tutor.
The river divides Madurai into two near-equal halves. A tutor from Koodal Nagar can reach Sellur easily, but a weekly trip to Villapuram means a bridge at a busy hour. Online, which bank someone lives on stops being part of the decision.
Localities such as Thirunagar on the Thirumangalam road, or the newer housing near the airport, are a long ride for most tutors. Local tutors from neighbouring areas are the practical home option; for anything specialised, online widens the choice.
An ISC elective, an IGCSE or IB paper, +2 Business Mathematics and Statistics, or Advanced-level JEE physics: in any one zone there may be few people who teach it well. Online lets you choose from across India.
The board months are another case. On the State Board's 2025-26 schedule, practicals came in February and theory papers in March. Short online checks the evening before a paper keep revision going without anyone crossing the city during the busiest weeks of the school year.
These reasons tend to fade. After the early habits settle, or a month into a new board, many students shift some or all of their sessions online without trouble.
| Situation | Usually suits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary-age child, tutor available on your bank of the river | Home | Close supervision; a short trip for the tutor |
| SSLC student working on constructions, graphs and diagrams | Home, with online revision checks | Drawing is corrected at the table; recall checks work on screen |
| +2 student with entrance preparation | Online on weekdays, a home visit at the weekend | Fits late evenings; the weekend visit covers long written work |
| ISC elective, IGCSE or IB paper | Online | Specialists are few in any single zone |
| Home on the city's edge, such as Thirunagar | A local home tutor plus online for specialist subjects | Keeps the long ride out of the weekly routine |
| Tamil-medium student wanting a teacher comfortable in that medium | Online, if no one suitable is nearby | Widens the search across Tamil Nadu |
The home tutor or online tutor comparison works through the trade-offs in more detail.
Even a home-tuition search can show online names. If too few local tutors match a Madurai request, the list grows outward in steps: your locality, your zone, the whole city, and finally tutors in other parts of Tamil Nadu and India who teach online. Each card shows the tutor's base. Tutors who join go through an ID check, which is not a police or background check; the demo is where you judge the teaching.
State Board papers are printed in a Tamil and English version, and a Tamil-medium student should write answers in the terms of the Tamil textbook. Finding a tutor who teaches a senior subject comfortably in that medium can be hard within one neighbourhood; online, the search covers the whole state. Say the medium in your request. For a student moving from Tamil to English medium, the tutor can introduce each technical term in both languages and then shift written practice into English. Board-specific detail is on our Tamil Nadu State Board tutors in Madurai page, with CBSE and ICSE and ISC pages for the other boards.
For subjects built on working, such as maths, physics, chemistry and accountancy, the tutor must be able to follow each line as your child writes it.
Try the whole arrangement in the free demo. More practical tips are in our online versus offline tutoring article.
Look in on the demo and the next few sessions. Most of the talking and writing should come from your child. When a slip happens, a good tutor stops and asks a question that lets your child find it. Cameras on both ends stay on. Practice comes from your child's school tests and real board papers, for a State Board student the Directorate's March papers, not from generic sheets. Every session closes with a few written lines on what was done and what to practise next. If the tutor simply talks over slides, that is a lecture, and you are paying for tuition. Our checklist for the demo class has further questions.
Whatever the split, try to keep one tutor for both kinds of session; continuity does more than the medium.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. With no ride across the river to account for, a tutor may quote a little less for online sessions; a sought-after specialist may not change the rate at all. The class, the board, the subject and how many sessions you book each week usually matter more than whether lessons are online. Every fee is visible before the demo; the pricing guide and our post on home tuition fees in Madurai explain more.
Send us the class, board, medium and subjects; say whether you want lessons only online or a mix with visits; add your locality if visits are possible; and name the evenings your child is free. If you would like to see local teachers before deciding, open your locality page, for example S.S. Colony, Ellis Nagar, Villapuram, Avaniapuram, Thiruparankundram or Thirunagar: nearby tutors are listed before online ones.
From there you can book a free demo class, look through tutors who teach online, or go to the Madurai home tutors page, which covers five zones from North Madurai to the Thiruparankundram side. Our Madurai home tuition guide covers timing in each zone. Teachers interested in online work can check Madurai tuition jobs, and for the state capital there is a page on online tutors for Chennai.
When the right tutor lives across the Vaigai or far from your locality, when your child needs a narrow specialist such as an ISC elective or Advanced-level JEE physics, when you live on the city's edge, or when senior classes leave only late evenings free. Online lets you choose on teaching alone.
On the home page, set the search switch to Online, or add the word online to your search with the subject and class; location then stops limiting the results. The online view of Find Tutors filters by subject, board, class, maximum fee, experience, rating and tutor gender, and the demo request has a Mode field.
Yes. Set the Mode field to online when you request the demo, and include the class, board, medium and suitable times. Two or three tutors come back to you with their fees, and the first lesson with your choice costs nothing. Settle the video app with the tutor, and how written work will be visible on screen.
Yes, and online can help, because the search is not limited to your neighbourhood. State Board papers are printed in a Tamil and English version, so tell us the medium; the tutor should practise answers using the Tamil textbook's terms. Explanations can be in either language, but written work should match the exam medium.
Partly. The SSLC maths paper ends with a construction and a graph, and science answers depend on diagrams, so drawing practice is easiest with a tutor at the table. Many families keep a home tutor for that and use short online sessions for recall checks and revision before the papers.
Yes, if they live within reach. A common pattern is a weekend visit for new chapters and long written practice, with weekday online sessions for doubts and homework checks. Some families switch fully online in February and March, when State Board practicals and papers crowd the calendar.
It can. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Without a ride across the city some tutors quote less online, while sought-after specialists often keep one rate.
