What home tuition costs in Chennai

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Online tuition by locality in Chennai

Online tutors for Chennai students: when the rail map should not choose your child's teacher

Chennai can be crossed by rail in several ways: suburban trains on more than one line, the MRTS along the coast, and the Blue and Green metro lines. Even so, large parts of the city, from the OMR to Porur and Medavakkam, still wait for their metro, and a tutor who lives on the wrong side of town can spend longer travelling than teaching. Online tuition removes that problem for the right student. The NXTutors Academic Team sets out below the Chennai cases where a screen beats a doorstep visit, the cases where it does not, how the State Board fits, the steps to arrange lessons on our site, the study-corner setup, and ways to combine visits and video calls with a single teacher.

In which Chennai situations does online tuition win?

Your area is still waiting for the metro

The Purple Line along the OMR, the Yellow Line out to Porur and the Red Line towards Medavakkam are all under construction. Until they open, tutors reach Sholinganallur, Navalur, Valasaravakkam or Pallikaranai by road, and a long ride at office hours is the first thing to break a weekly routine. Online keeps the lesson on time.

The subject is narrow

Only a handful of teachers in any single locality handle IB Higher Level, Cambridge A Level or ISC maths well. Requiring one of them to drive across Chennai for a six o'clock lesson shrinks that handful again. On screen, the whole country is in range. See our IB and IGCSE tutor pages for Chennai.

School, coaching and travel fill the day

A Class 11 or 12 student with coaching after school may be free only after eight. A focused forty-five-minute online session at that hour is realistic; a tutor travelling to your home at that time usually is not. Our JEE and NEET pages for Chennai explain how tutoring fits around coaching.

The tutor you trust has moved

A good tutor who moves from Anna Nagar to Tambaram, or a family that moves from T Nagar to the OMR, does not have to mean starting again. Online lets the relationship continue across the city, or across the country.

When should a Chennai child stay with a home tutor?

  • Young children, roughly up to Class 3 or 4. Handwriting, reading aloud and early number work need an adult at the child's side.
  • A student who drifts on screens. If school video lessons meant a second tab and a phone under the table, paid lessons will go the same way.
  • The first weeks after a change of board, such as SSLC to CBSE for Class 11. Gaps are found faster sitting together.
  • Maths, physics or accountancy with no way to show the page. If the tutor sees only final answers, the error that lost the marks stays hidden.
  • An unreliable connection with no mobile hotspot as backup.

These are starting conditions, not rules for ever: a younger child can go online once routines are firm, and a student who has changed board can move to screen lessons after a month or so.

Our comparison of home and online tutors walks through the trade-offs in more detail.

Does online work for the Tamil Nadu State Board?

It can, with one condition: the tutor must teach from the state textbooks and in the medium your child writes the paper in. The Directorate of Government Examinations prints the SSLC and Higher Secondary papers in a Tamil and an English version, and publishes past and sample question papers for Classes 10, 11 and 12, which makes it easy for an online tutor anywhere to work from the same material your child's school uses. Say clearly in your request whether your child writes in Tamil or English. Our Tamil Nadu Board tutors in Chennai page explains the board itself.

Setting up online lessons on NXTutors, step by step

  1. Flip the search to Online. The home-page search has a Home tutor, Online or Either switch; alternatively, put the word online in what you type, as in online ISC physics Class 12. Once online is chosen, how far a tutor lives no longer matters.
  2. Narrow it with filters if you like. The online view of Find Tutors takes subject, board, class, a top fee, years of experience, rating and the tutor's gender.
  3. Pick Either when you have not decided. That allows a mix: someone close enough for occasional home visits alongside tutors from other cities.
  4. Request the demo. Set the form's Mode field to online and give the class, board and evenings you can offer. Two or three tutors come back, fees attached.
  5. Treat the free first class as a real lesson. Use it to settle which video app you will use and how your child's written work will reach the tutor.
  6. Keep or change. If the fit is wrong, the next name on the shortlist gets a demo, and a later change is free as well.

Searching for home tuition can still bring up online tutors. If too few local tutors match a Chennai request, the list widens to online tutors elsewhere in Tamil Nadu and then the rest of India, and each card names the tutor's base. Locality pages run in the same order: the locality, its zone, the city, then online. So an online profile on your shortlist is a signal that the specialist you need lives beyond easy travelling distance. Every tutor who joins completes an ID check, which confirms identity only; teaching is something you judge at the demo.

Setting up the study corner

  • A laptop or a big tablet. Graphs, ledger formats and multi-line derivations are hard to read on a phone.
  • A camera on the page. Clip a spare phone above the notebook, or use a tablet with a stylus. Writing on paper keeps the habits the board exam needs.
  • One shared board or document that tutor and student both annotate, saved as the week's notes.
  • A headset, since pressure cookers, televisions and traffic all find their way into an evening call.
  • The dining table or a corner of the hall, well lit, not a closed bedroom.
  • A backup connection from a phone hotspot, and a charged laptop for power cuts.

Use the demo as a trial run. If the tutor struggles to read your child's working, solve that before paying for a single lesson. Our piece on online and offline tutoring has further practical advice.

Signs that an online lesson is actually working

Across the first few weeks, check five things. Your child should be doing most of the talking and writing. Errors should be stopped at the line where they start, with a question, not just corrected. Both cameras should stay on. Practice should come from the school's tests or the board's own past papers, not generic sheets. And each session should end with a two-line note of what was covered and what to practise. A tutor presenting slides for an hour is running a webinar. More questions are in our checklist for demo classes.

One tutor, two formats

Our Chennai city page already points to a common rhythm: a weekly home lesson, plus a short online session for doubts, both with one tutor. Ways families adapt it:

  • Saturday or Sunday at home, a weekday call: fresh chapters and long written practice in person, quick doubt-clearing on screen.
  • In person during term, on screen in exam weeks: twenty minutes the night before a paper, without a journey.
  • Screen days around festivals near crowded temple streets, or on weekends when the ECR fills up.
  • Calls while away on a family trip or at a hostel, so the weekly rhythm survives.

The format can change week to week; what matters is keeping the same person.

Keeping online lessons safe

  • Run lessons on a shared family device in a common room.
  • Ask the tutor to send links only to a parent, or to a group a parent belongs to.
  • Cameras stay on for both sides; no switching to private messaging apps.
  • Sit within earshot for younger children, especially in the first weeks.
  • Keep personal photos and family details out of the lesson.

Does online cost less than a home tutor in Chennai?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Taking the road trip out of the arrangement can bring a quote down slightly, especially for a tutor who would otherwise cross the city. Experienced senior specialists often charge the same in both formats. The class, board, subject and number of sessions shift the total more than the medium does. Fees are visible before the demo; for budgeting, see the Chennai tuition fees guide and the pricing guide.

Starting with an online tutor

Tell us the class, board, medium and subjects, whether you want purely online or online with some home visits, your locality if visits are involved, and the evenings that are free. If you would like to see local tutors before deciding, the locality pages for Alwarpet, Chromepet, Navalur, Purasawalkam, Virugambakkam and Kolathur list nearby tutors first and online tutors after them.

From here, request a free demo class, look through tutors who teach online, or go to the Chennai home tutors page for all eight zones. If you would prefer a woman teacher, read about female home tutors in Chennai; commerce students will find commerce home tutors in Chennai useful.

Online Tuition in Chennai: common questions

When is an online tutor better than a home tutor in Chennai?

When your area still has no metro and tutors must come by road, as on much of the OMR or around Porur and Medavakkam; when your child needs a narrow specialist such as IB Higher Level or ISC maths; or when school and coaching leave only late evenings. Online lets you choose on teaching quality alone.

How do I find online tutors on NXTutors?

Pick Online under the home-page search, or type online with the subject and class. Distance then stops limiting the list, so tutors from any city appear. Find Tutors set to online lets you filter by board, class, fee cap, experience, rating and tutor gender, and the demo form has a Mode field.

Can a State Board student learn online?

Yes, if the tutor teaches from the Tamil Nadu state textbooks and in your child's medium. The Directorate of Government Examinations prints SSLC and Higher Secondary papers in Tamil and English versions and publishes past and sample papers, so an online tutor anywhere can use the same material. Mention the medium in your request.

Which children should not start online?

Children up to about Class 3 or 4, who need an adult beside them for handwriting and reading aloud; students who drift on screens; and students in the first weeks after changing board. For maths, physics or accountancy, online works only if the tutor can see the notebook live.

What equipment does my child need for online tuition?

A laptop or large tablet, a second phone on a stand or a stylus tablet so the tutor can see written work, a shared whiteboard, headphones with a microphone, a table in a shared room, and a mobile hotspot for evenings when the home connection drops. Test everything in the free demo.

Can one tutor teach both at home and online?

Yes, and it is often the most practical arrangement in Chennai: one home lesson a week and a short online session for doubts with the same tutor. Choose Either in the search, or say so in your request, and we will look for a tutor who can reach your home for the weekly visit.

Is an online tutor cheaper in Chennai?

Sometimes a little. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with senior classes, IB and IGCSE, and entrance work toward the upper end. Online removes travel, so some tutors quote less; senior specialists may charge the same. Every fee is shown before the free demo.
