Home Tuition in West and North Chennai: An Area Guide
West and North Chennai hold some of the city's most planned neighbourhoods and some of its oldest. Anna Nagar, KK Nagar and Ashok Nagar were shaped by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, with numbered avenues, sectors and roads; Purasawalkam, Perambur and Royapuram are among the older parts of the city, with old high roads, busy markets and some of the first railway buildings in South India. For a home tutor that means two very different visits: easy-to-find addresses on wide roads in the west, and narrow lanes where the last part is on foot in the north.
This guide covers four zones: Anna Nagar, Kilpauk & Aminjikarai; Vadapalani, KK Nagar & Porur; Mogappair, Ambattur & Avadi; and Perambur, Kolathur & North Chennai. For every area it notes the rail tutors use, the gate or doorstep routine and the road to time a class around.
Which line does each zone depend on?
| Zone | Working rail tutors use | Main roads to plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Anna Nagar, Kilpauk & Aminjikarai | Green Line, underground through Anna Nagar and Shenoy Nagar, and at Arumbakkam and Koyambedu | Poonamallee High Road, Inner Ring Road |
| Vadapalani, KK Nagar & Porur | Green Line at Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar | Arcot Road, Inner Ring Road, Porur Junction |
| Mogappair, Ambattur & Avadi | Suburban line from Chennai Central to Arakkonam; Green Line at Thirumangalam and Koyambedu | Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road, Inner Ring Road |
| Perambur, Kolathur & North Chennai | Suburban lines; Blue Line at Washermanpet and Tondiarpet | Red Hills Road, market streets |
The Yellow Line towards Porur and the Red Line through Anna Nagar West, Villivakkam and Kolathur are under construction and carry no passengers, so plan around the lines in the middle column.
Anna Nagar, Kilpauk & Aminjikarai
Anna Nagar was developed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board in the early 1970s after the 1968 World Trade Fair held on the site. Arumbakkam, Koyambedu and CMBT stations opened on 29 June 2015 with the first Green Line section, and the underground section from Thirumangalam through Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East and Shenoy Nagar followed in May 2017. Poonamallee High Road, built in the 1850s as the Grand Western Trunk Road, runs through Kilpauk, Aminjikarai and Arumbakkam to Koyambedu.
- Anna Nagar: numbered avenues in a grid, with houses on plots and apartment buildings, so tutors find the door quickly. Classes near 2nd Avenue start more easily before the early-evening rush.
- Anna Nagar West: the same grid, with doorstep entry for houses and small gate registers for flats. Thirumangalam is the nearest working metro, and the large bus terminus on the Inner Ring Road is another way in.
- Shenoy Nagar: older houses and low-rise apartment buildings first planned for middle-income families, with its own Green Line station, so a tutor can walk from the metro.
- Kilpauk: a former cantonment where residential streets of houses and flats sit beside large institutional campuses. Two underground Green Line stations are within reach.
- Aminjikarai: residential colonies such as Railway Colony and Collectorate Colony, where the tutor rings at the door, next to a busy commercial belt. Shenoy Nagar station is close; avoid the evening peak on the High Road.
- Arumbakkam: colonies such as MMDA Colony and Jai Nagar with houses, government-built homes and flats. Arumbakkam station opened in June 2015, and traffic builds at the Koyambedu grade separator at office hours.
- Purasawalkam: markets for clothing, jewellery and food, old family houses and newer flats. Chennai Central is close for tutors on suburban trains, parking is limited, and weekday evenings on the High Road are busiest.
Vadapalani, KK Nagar & Porur
Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar stations opened on 29 June 2015 on the first Green Line section from Koyambedu to Alandur. Arcot Road runs through Vadapalani, Virugambakkam and Valasaravakkam to Porur Junction. The Yellow Line from Poonamallee to Vadapalani is under construction, with stations planned at Porur Junction, Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar and Virugambakkam South.
- Vadapalani: most families live in flats beside film studios and shopping centres. Allow a moment at the gate; tutors often take the metro to avoid Arcot Road and the Inner Ring Road at office hours.
- KK Nagar: a grid of rectangular sectors, each with a park near the centre, so addresses are easy to find. Housing-board flats and apartments need a short gate check. Ashok Nagar is the nearest metro station.
- Ashok Nagar: broad numbered roads, housing-board flats, newer apartments and houses, with its own Green Line station. The junction at the lion-topped pillar is busy on weekday evenings.
- Virugambakkam and Valasaravakkam: colonies of houses and apartment buildings along Arcot Road. While their Yellow Line stations are being built, tutors ride the Green Line to Vadapalani and take an auto, or come by bus. Late-afternoon slots avoid the Arcot Road peak.
- Porur: apartment buildings and older houses where Arcot Road, Mount-Poonamallee Road and Kundrathur Road meet. Tutors arrive by road, so tell the gate to expect them; the junction is congested at office hours.
Mogappair, Ambattur & Avadi
Pattaravakkam, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, Annanur and Avadi are stations on the suburban section from Chennai Central to Arakkonam, first electrified on 29 November 1979. The Ambattur Industrial Estate was commissioned in 1964, the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road passes through Ambattur, and Avadi became Tamil Nadu's 15th municipal corporation in 2019.
- Mogappair: Mogappair East and West mix apartment buildings with older plotted homes. Thirumangalam and Koyambedu on the Green Line, and Ambattur, Pattaravakkam and Korattur on the suburban line, are the nearest rail.
- Ambattur: established colonies of houses, apartment buildings and older layouts around the industrial estate. A tutor from Villivakkam, Perambur or Avadi can take a local train; lessons suit the late afternoon or weekends, away from the High Road peak.
- Avadi: Housing Board estates, independent houses, plotted layouts and apartment projects around a suburban terminal. Defence areas and gated estates may need entry details in advance, and online classes are handy for specialist subjects.
Perambur, Kolathur & North Chennai
Royapuram station opened in June 1856 as the first railway terminus in South India, and the Madras Railway set up its workshops at Perambur the same year. Washermanpet on the Blue Line opened on 10 February 2019, and the extension to Wimco Nagar, including Tondiarpet, on 14 February 2021. Red Line stations at Kolathur Junction, Srinivasa Nagar and Villivakkam are under construction.
- Perambur: three suburban stations, older houses and newer apartment buildings around a busy market. In old streets expect a doorstep visit; book evening lessons a little earlier.
- Villivakkam: a dense neighbourhood of houses and flats, with a suburban station and a road subway linking both sides of the railway line. Late-afternoon and weekend lessons avoid the busy roads near the station and bus terminus.
- Kolathur: one of the older housing colonies in the city, with independent houses and low- to mid-rise flats. Villivakkam is the nearest station, and Red Hills Road is busiest at office hours.
- Royapuram: old family houses in narrow lanes and newer flats beside the sea and the Kasimedu fishing harbour. Parking is limited, so train, bus or auto is easier than a car.
- Tondiarpet: older houses and flats among export houses, shops and small factories, served by both a Blue Line station and a suburban station. Evening or weekend lessons avoid the working-day bustle.
When should a weekday class start?
- Near a station, almost any time. Across Anna Nagar, Shenoy Nagar, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar, a tutor who comes by metro can keep an evening slot even when the roads are busy.
- On the arterial roads, around the peak. Poonamallee High Road, the Inner Ring Road, Arcot Road, the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road and Red Hills Road are heaviest at office hours, so pick a slot before or after.

Frequently asked questions
Which metro stations serve Anna Nagar?
Anna Nagar East, Anna Nagar Tower and Thirumangalam, all underground Green Line stations opened in May 2017. Thirumangalam is also the nearest working station for Anna Nagar West, where a Red Line station is under construction. The numbered avenues make homes easy to find once the tutor arrives.
Is Porur or Valasaravakkam on the metro yet?
Not yet. Yellow Line stations at Porur Junction, Porur Bypass and Valasaravakkam are under construction and carry no passengers. For now tutors take the Green Line to Vadapalani and an auto, or come by bus or two-wheeler along Arcot Road. Late-afternoon slots avoid the office-hours peak.
How do tutors reach Ambattur and Avadi?
Mostly by local train on the suburban line from Chennai Central to Arakkonam, which stops at Pattaravakkam, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal and Avadi, then an auto or a walk. In Avadi, defence areas and gated estates may need entry details in advance, so share the address and a contact number.
Do tutors come to the door in Perambur and Royapuram?
Usually, yes. In the older streets and narrow lanes of both areas, the tutor walks the last part and knocks at the door, while newer apartment buildings may keep a gate register. Parking is limited near the markets, so tutors tend to come by train, bus or auto.
How much does home tuition cost in West and North Chennai?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, which is shown before the free demo.
