Home Tuition Fees in Chennai (2026): Plan the Hours First
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. That band holds from Mylapore and T Nagar to Anna Nagar, Tambaram and the far end of the OMR. Each tutor sets their own fee and you see it before the first class, which is a free demo, so a Chennai family's real work is not guessing a rate. It is deciding how many hours the child needs and which tutors can reach the home.
This guide therefore starts with hours rather than rupees. It decodes the fee sentence, suggests weekly hours by stage, turns them into money at both ends of the band and shows how Chennai's rail lines shape your shortlist.
What is the fee sentence actually telling you?
The one range we quote has three clauses, and each answers a different question.
| Part of the sentence | What it means for you | What to ask at the demo |
|---|---|---|
| Most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour | The usual band for a one-to-one hour at home. It is a range, not a rate card. | Is the fee per hour or per visit, and how long is each visit? |
| Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end | Senior classes, international programmes and entrance preparation need more preparation for every hour taught. | How will school work and programme or entrance work share the hours? |
| Specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more | A small group of specialists price above the band. | What will the first month cover, week by week? |
Everything else, from a Class 4 reading tutor in Kolathur to a Class 12 chemistry tutor in Velachery, sits somewhere inside that band. Where it sits depends on the tutor's own fee, not on a city-wide price list.
How many hours does each stage usually need?
Hours are the part of the budget a family controls. The table suggests a first weekly plan by stage. The demo and the first school test will adjust it, so treat these as starting points rather than rules.
| Stage | A first weekly plan | When to review it |
|---|---|---|
| Classes 1–5 | Two short visits for reading, maths and homework habits | At the end of the first term |
| Classes 6–8 | Two hours, usually one subject at a time | When a new topic such as algebra starts to cause trouble |
| Classes 9–10 | Two hours each for maths and science, if both need help | After each school exam |
| Classes 11–12 science | Two hours for each subject that needs help | Before school exams and again before board exams |
| JEE or NEET alongside Classes 11–12 | Built around the school timetable and agreed after the demo | Every few weeks, with the tutor |
| IB or IGCSE | Two to three hours for each subject | At each internal assessment point the school sets |
Chennai families study under the Tamil Nadu State Board, which follows the state's own syllabus, and under CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB and IGCSE. The board matters mainly for which tutor fits, since depth in that exact syllabus counts; it does not set a separate band.
How do we turn hours into a weekly and a monthly figure?
The sum is simple: hourly fee × hours a week. For a month, multiply that weekly total by 4.33, because a calendar month holds slightly more than four weeks. Before you read a single profile, work it out at both ends of the band so you know the widest spread.
| Hours a week | Weekly at ₹800 an hour | Weekly at ₹2,500 an hour | Monthly at ₹800 (about) | Monthly at ₹2,500 (about) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹800 | ₹2,500 | ₹3,500 | ₹10,800 |
| 2 | ₹1,600 | ₹5,000 | ₹6,900 | ₹21,700 |
| 3 | ₹2,400 | ₹7,500 | ₹10,400 | ₹32,500 |
| 4 | ₹3,200 | ₹10,000 | ₹13,900 | ₹43,300 |
These are the two edges of the band multiplied out, not quotes. Your own figure will sit between the two columns, and the shortlist replaces the band with real numbers: each matched tutor's fee is visible before the demo, so you can fill in two or three actual quotes. For a whole term, multiply the weekly figure by the teaching weeks you expect to use, leaving out weeks when the family is away. The NXTutors pricing guide sets out what pushes a quote up or down.
Does where you live in Chennai change what you pay?
Not the band. A quote mostly reflects the class, the board, the subject and how well the tutor knows that syllabus. Your address affects a different thing: the number of tutors able to travel to you after school, and therefore the number of quotes on the table. In Chennai, the nearest station decides much of that.
Along the MRTS and the suburban lines
The MRTS runs from Chennai Beach past Light House, Thirumayilai and Mandaveli to Thiruvanmiyur, Perungudi and Velachery, and since March 2026 on to Puzhuthivakkam and St Thomas Mount. The suburban line through Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Mambalam, Saidapet, Guindy and Chromepet to Tambaram, and the line from Chennai Central through Perambur, Villivakkam, Ambattur and Avadi, carry many tutors too. Live within an easy auto ride of one of these stations and tutors from anywhere on that line become realistic options. See the South Chennai guide and the West and North Chennai guide.
Along the Blue and Green Lines
The Metro Blue Line links Tondiarpet and Washermanpet in the north with Thousand Lights, Teynampet, Saidapet, Guindy and Nanganallur Road further south. The Green Line runs underground through Anna Nagar and Shenoy Nagar, then on through Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar to St Thomas Mount. A tutor who lives near either line can reach homes a long way along it without touching the evening roads.
The OMR, the ECR and the growing suburbs
Beyond Perungudi, most of the OMR and all of the ECR have no rail station, and the metro lines planned for the corridor, Lines 3 and 5, are still under construction with no passenger service. In Thoraipakkam, Sholinganallur, Navalur, Kelambakkam, Neelankarai and Medavakkam, tutors come by road, so the shortlist leans on tutors who live close by, and online classes cover specialist subjects. The rate is not higher or lower for it. See the OMR and ECR guide.
Which weeks of the school year need a line in the budget?
- The first weeks of the year. Fix the weekly hours, then review them after the first school test instead of paying for more from day one.
- The run-up to school and board exams. Extra revision hours are common. Settle their rate at the start of the year and give them an end date, such as one added hour weekly for the final stretch, so the total stays known.
- Festival weeks and family travel. Streets around the temple in Mylapore, the bazaars of T Nagar and the temple streets of Nanganallur get crowded on festival days. Agree whether a class moves online, shifts to a morning or pauses.
- Once results are out. Choose between a break, a lighter single weekly class or an early start on the next class's work. Pausing for a few weeks costs nothing and often helps.
Home, online or both?
A home tutor suits younger children and any subject that needs hands-on checking of written work. Online works well for a second subject, for IB and IGCSE programmes, and for areas where few tutors live nearby. On the OMR and the ECR in particular, pairing a local home tutor for the main subject with an online tutor for a specialist one keeps the choice wide without extra travel. To weigh the two, read home tutor or online tutor.
What should we settle before the first paid month?
- Do we pay at the start of each month or once the month's classes are done?
- How much notice does either side give to cancel, and is a missed class made up?
- If a class moves online on a day travel is disrupted, is the rate the same?
- Are revision hours before exams charged at the usual rate?
- What is the fee if a brother or sister joins the same class?
- In a gated community, has the tutor been added as a regular visitor, so no class time is lost at the gate?

Frequently asked questions
How much does a home tutor cost in Chennai?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each Chennai tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the first class, which is a free demo. The band holds from Mylapore and T Nagar to Anna Nagar, Tambaram and the OMR.
How do we work out a monthly tuition budget in Chennai?
A Chennai family works out a monthly tuition budget by multiplying the hourly fee by the weekly hours, then multiplying that weekly total by 4.33. The 4.33 allows for a calendar month holding slightly more than four weeks. Work it out at both ends of the band first, then replace the band with the two or three real quotes on your shortlist.
How many hours of home tuition a week does a Chennai student need?
A Chennai student's weekly tuition hours depend on the stage, and the demo and first school test will adjust any starting plan. Classes 6–8 often begin with two hours, usually one subject at a time. Classes 9–10 take two hours each for maths and science if both need help, Classes 11–12 science two hours per subject, and IB or IGCSE two to three hours per subject.
Do Tamil Nadu State Board students in Chennai pay less than CBSE or ICSE students?
Tamil Nadu State Board students in Chennai do not pay less than CBSE or ICSE students as a rule, because the same band applies to every board. What the board changes is which tutor fits, since depth in that exact syllabus matters. The class, the subject and any entrance goal such as JEE or NEET move a quote more than the board itself does.
Which train lines help home tutors reach families in Chennai?
In Chennai, the MRTS, the suburban lines and the Metro Blue and Green Lines all help home tutors reach families after school. The MRTS runs from Chennai Beach to Velachery and on to St Thomas Mount; suburban lines run to Tambaram and Avadi. Live within an easy auto ride of a station and tutors from anywhere on that line become realistic options.
Does living on the OMR or ECR make home tuition dearer?
Living on Chennai's OMR or ECR does not make home tuition dearer, because the fee band is the same across the city. Beyond Perungudi most of the OMR and all of the ECR have no rail station, so tutors come by road and the shortlist leans on tutors who live nearby. Pairing a local home tutor with an online specialist keeps the choice wide.
Should we wait for the new Chennai metro lines before choosing a tutor?
Chennai families need not wait for the new metro lines, because Lines 3 and 5 planned for the OMR corridor are still under construction with no passenger service. Plan around the MRTS, the suburban lines, the Blue and Green Lines and the roads you use now. A tutor who reaches you comfortably today is the one to book for this school year.
