Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Chennai families often tell us the same thing about JEE: their child is doing well in school and still losing marks in coaching tests. Usually the cause is not effort. School teaching, whether on the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE or ISC, prepares a student to write full answers to familiar questions; JEE asks for quick, accurate choices on unfamiliar ones, with a mark lost for every wrong guess. A home tutor's job is to close that gap, subject by subject. In Chennai, the second job is logistics: a city where the suburban trains, the MRTS and two metro lines decide which tutors can reach you by six in the evening. Our national JEE home tutor guide covers the exam and the subject split; this page covers the Chennai side.
For 2026 the NTA held JEE (Main) Paper 1 as a computer-based test of three hours in maths, physics and chemistry. Each subject carried 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-value ones, 100 marks per subject, with four marks for a correct response and one taken away for an incorrect one in both sections. Two sessions were held, and when scores tied, the maths score was checked first. JEE (Advanced), the IITs' own exam for those who qualify, has two compulsory papers. Treat these as last year's figures and read the current bulletin and brochure before planning.
The NTA syllabus lists 14 maths units and 20 each in physics and chemistry, sitting close to the NCERT books. How far a Chennai student is from it depends on the board.
| Board | The gap | How a tutor closes it |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu State Board (higher secondary) | Own textbooks and term tests; questions reward complete written answers; chapter order differs from the NTA list | A written chapter map against the NTA units, extra reading where the state book is lighter, and objective practice built in each week |
| CBSE | Content largely matches; JEE wants speed and multi-concept problems | Timed sets and harder problem types layered on the NCERT chapter |
| ISC | Wide overlap; different sequencing and long answers at school | JEE practice paced to the school's term so it never runs ahead |
| IB or IGCSE route | Depth and coverage can differ considerably | The NTA bulletin's qualifying-examination list first, then a unit-by-unit gap list |
One practical point for State Board students: take the board's scheme and dates only from its official notices, and do not let JEE practice crowd out the board's own pattern in the months before board exams. For school-side support, see our Chennai maths, physics and chemistry home tutor pages.
In Chennai a JEE specialist who travels by train is often more punctual than one who drives. The South Line runs to Tambaram, the western line to Avadi and Arakkonam, the MRTS from Chennai Beach through Velachery to St Thomas Mount (extended in March 2026), and the Blue and Green metro lines meet at Alandur. The Purple, Yellow and Red lines are under construction, which leaves the OMR, Porur and Medavakkam on the road for now.
| Zone | Tutor's route in | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore (e.g. Thiruvanmiyur) | MRTS down the east side; Teynampet on the Blue Line for Alwarpet | Early or late weekday; on Mylapore festival days, switch online |
| T Nagar, Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam | South Line stations and the Blue Line | Mid-afternoon or late evening; avoid shopping weekends |
| Velachery, Guindy and Tambaram (e.g. Medavakkam) | Blue Line, MRTS and GST Road suburban trains; Medavakkam by two-wheeler | Miss the Kathipara and GST Road peaks |
| OMR and ECR (e.g. Kelambakkam) | Mostly by road; Perungudi has the MRTS | After the evening office peak or at weekends; one online session for doubts |
| Anna Nagar, Kilpauk and Aminjikarai (e.g. Arumbakkam) | Green Line through Anna Nagar and Arumbakkam | Earlier evening, before Poonamallee High Road fills |
| Vadapalani, KK Nagar and Porur (e.g. Ashok Nagar) | Green Line to Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar; buses up Arcot Road beyond | Late afternoon or weekends |
| Mogappair, Ambattur and Avadi | Arakkonam-line trains for Ambattur and Avadi | Late afternoon; send gate instructions for estates |
| Perambur, Kolathur and North Chennai (e.g. Royapuram) | Suburban trains and the Blue Line's northern stations | Slightly earlier than the market-road crowd |
Areas and zones are all listed on our Chennai home tuition page. Name your nearest station when you send a request, and we look for tutors who live along that line.
The student is back early enough on coaching days for a short online doubt session. The tutor's main visit goes on a free weekday afternoon, and test analysis on Sunday. This is the lightest set-up and suits a student whose coaching scores are close to where they should be.
Long travel on coaching days leaves little energy for anything else. Keep those evenings tutor-free, and hold one longer home session at the weekend plus one online slot midweek. Choose the specialist for the subject where marks are lost, not the one closest to home.
The tutor sets the pace from the NTA syllabus, in writing, and the family arranges a separate mock series. Usually this means two or three subject tutors and a fixed weekly routine. It works for disciplined students; without the routine it drifts.
An illustration of the second pattern: a Class 12 student on the OMR near Kelambakkam, State Board, with coaching in another zone on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and physics as the weak subject. A physics tutor who lives on the corridor comes on Sunday morning for two hours, when the road is calm; Wednesday has a 40-minute online session for doubts from Tuesday's class; Friday evening is a short online review of the week's coaching test. The tutor is added as a regular guest in the society app, so the gate never eats into the lesson. Three touchpoints a week, and nobody sits in OMR traffic at six.
Our comparison of JEE coaching and a home tutor goes deeper; it was written for Gurugram, but the trade-offs are the same in Chennai.
On the OMR and in Medavakkam, where rail is still being built, this split is often what makes a specialist possible. The home and online tutor comparison lists the general pros and cons.
Since both JEE papers are taken on a computer, some practice on screen helps whichever way the teaching runs: timed sets on a laptop at home, with the tutor reviewing the result online the same evening. For online sessions, a writing tablet or a phone clamped above the notebook lets the tutor follow the working rather than only the final answer.
| Year | Board work | JEE work |
|---|---|---|
| Class 11 | Keep up with term tests; begin the State Board, CBSE or ISC versus NTA chapter map | Foundations: kinematics and laws of motion, basic calculus, mole concept; an error log from week one |
| Class 12 | Board-style answers in the weeks before the board exam; school practicals | Class 12 chapters, Class 11 revision, full timed papers before the January session |
| Repeat year | Usually none | Analysis of last year's papers, rebuilding the chapters that cost most, many full papers; weekday daytime sessions |
Check eligibility rules for a repeat year in the current bulletin and brochure; in 2026, JEE (Advanced) allowed at most two attempts in consecutive years. Topic plans are in our JEE maths, JEE physics and JEE chemistry guides, and the JEE physics tutor page describes a physics session minute by minute.

Yes. The tutor should map the state textbook chapters against the NTA syllabus, add reading where the state book is lighter, and build objective, timed practice into every week. Keep the board's own pattern in view before board exams, and take its scheme and dates only from the board's official notices.
Homes near a working station: the South Line to Tambaram, the western line to Avadi, the MRTS through Mylapore and Velachery, or the Blue and Green metro lines. The OMR, Porur and Medavakkam still rely on road travel, so a tutor living nearby or a hybrid plan works better there.
Keep long coaching evenings free of tutoring. Hold one longer home session at the weekend, add a short online doubt slot midweek, and review the coaching test online. This avoids asking a tutor to cross the city in the evening peak and leaves the student enough energy for self-study.
Often both. Maths and physics teaching gain most from a tutor at the table watching the working. Chemistry revision and coaching doubts work well online. Because JEE papers are taken on a computer, some on-screen timed practice helps too. A writing tablet or phone camera over the notebook makes online sessions work.
For Class 11 foundations and JEE Main-level work, one tutor covering two or three subjects can keep a single plan. For harder problem-solving, a specialist in the weakest subject usually does more. Many Chennai students in coaching need help in one subject only; start there and watch the others through test scores.
