Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

In Chennai, where a large share of children study under the State Board, an ICSE child's maths homework can look like a different subject. The topics overlap, but CISCE adds whole units other boards leave out, lets each school choose its own textbooks, and marks every line of working. The right tutor reads a notebook the way a CISCE examiner would. Abhinandan Tiwary, the NXTutors tutor for Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths, wrote this guide; the ISC part comes from Ajay Vatsyayan, our IB, IGCSE and ISC maths tutor. The middle-school chapters look routine (fractions, decimals, ratio, percentage, simple and compound interest, early algebra, angles and triangles, area and perimeter, data handling), yet each one lays a habit that pays later. Percentages done quickly become GST and dividends in Class 10; tidy bracket work becomes factorisation; a written reason beside every angle becomes geometry proofs. At this age a weekly session that checks the notebook as much as the answers is usually enough. Our Class 8 maths tutor page covers this stage across boards.
Class 9 brings logarithms and indices, compound interest, simultaneous equations, factorisation and expansions, congruent triangles, the mid-point theorem, Pythagoras, rectilinear figures, circles, statistics, mensuration, and a first look at trigonometry and coordinate geometry. Logarithms, reasoned proofs and harder factorisation are where students usually stall, and Class 10 leaves no spare time to fix them, so this is a sensible year to start tuition if it has not begun. See the Class 9 maths tutor page for the year in general.
| Unit | Contents | What the tutor checks |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial mathematics | Goods and Services Tax; recurring deposits in banking; shares and dividends | That face value, market value and dividend rate are never mixed up |
| Algebra | Matrices; arithmetic and geometric progressions; quadratic equations; linear inequations; the factor and remainder theorems; ratio and proportion | Matrix order; solution sets written on a number line |
| Coordinate geometry | Reflection in axes and points; the section and mid-point formulae; the equation of a straight line | The right axis or point for each reflection |
| Geometry | Similarity, loci, circles, constructions | A reason for each statement; construction arcs left visible |
| Mensuration | Cylinder, cone, sphere and combined solids, melting and recasting | Radius versus diameter; consistent units |
| Trigonometry | Identities, heights and distances | Every step of an identity shown; a clear diagram first |
| Statistics and probability | Measures of central tendency, histograms and ogives; probability of simple events | Accurate reading of the median and quartiles from an ogive |
Commercial mathematics is worth starting early: its questions follow steady patterns, so once a student is fluent they become reliable marks. A chapter-by-chapter view is in our ICSE Class 10 maths board guide.
The board paper is worth 80 marks, and internal assessment across the year adds 20, through assignments marked with an external examiner involved. The CISCE specimen paper for 2026 shows Section A as compulsory and worth 40 marks, a spread of short questions (multiple-choice items among them) that touches the whole syllabus. Section B carries the other 40 marks, and the candidate answers any four of its longer, multi-part questions.
Two things follow for preparation. Section A reaches every chapter, so none can be left out. And the choice in Section B only helps if it has been practised: read the section through, decide on four early, and finish each one rather than switching halfway. Full mock papers should time that decision too. Practice should lean on ICSE past papers and the CISCE specimen; material written for other boards rarely matches the ICSE style.
This takes patience on both sides, because the tutor has to read every line in every session. Students who grumble at first tend to notice the difference in the next school test.
| Phase | Priority | Sessions a week |
|---|---|---|
| Start of the session | Class 9 gaps closed; commercial mathematics and algebra alongside school | Two |
| Mid-year | Circles, similarity, loci, reflection and solids, each closed with a chapter test checked for layout | Two |
| Later months | Identities, heights and distances, ogives; the syllabus finished; internal assignments; the first timed papers | Two or three |
| Run-up to the board paper | Mock papers in which picking four Section B questions is timed, then a review of every slip | Three |
Starting late is not hopeless: secure commercial mathematics and the most regular Section B question types first, then widen.
Chennai families move between boards more often than they expect: a new school after a house move, or a change of plan before Class 11. Arriving in ICSE from the State Board around Class 8 or 9, a child typically has to learn matrices and commercial mathematics and write proofs more fully; one coming from CBSE needs the same units and practice with ICSE's denser papers. A student leaving ICSE loses a few topics but has to learn the new board's textbooks and question style, including, on the State Board, its sections with compulsory questions. Either way, a tutor who knows both boards can list the gaps and close them in weeks rather than repeating the year. Our Tamil Nadu State Board tutors in Chennai page explains the state papers.
After Class 10 some Chennai ICSE students continue to ISC, and others move to the State Board's +1 and +2 or to CBSE. Staying on means a real jump in difficulty. In Class 12 the subject is assessed through an 80-mark theory paper and 20 marks of project work. From the 2027 examination, candidates no longer choose between Section B and Section C: everyone covers the same seven units, which take in relations and functions, algebra, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability. Students who want commerce-oriented content take ISC Applied Mathematics, a separate subject.
Class 11 lays the foundation, especially functions, limits and early calculus, and a weak Class 11 shows up in Class 12. ISC science students who are also aiming at JEE can have both planned in one timetable; read our JEE home tutors in Chennai page, and the national ISC maths tutor guide for the paper in detail.
ICSE homes are spread through the city, so we start from the route a tutor can repeat every week:
The west and north Chennai tuition guide goes further, and every locality is on the Chennai home tutors page.
ICSE maths is a subject where the tutor's presence pays, because layout is corrected in the moment, before a bad habit sets. Online works when a camera looks down on the notebook and the student writes each step before speaking. For Class 10, a home session and an online session each week with the same tutor suits many families, and moving both online for a fortnight before the pre-boards keeps the timetable intact when school days run long.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Junior classes are usually charged less than Class 10 board preparation or ISC, and travel and weekly frequency count too. Each fee appears before the demo; for the factors, read the pricing guide and our post on Chennai home tuition fees.
Send the class, the chapters causing trouble, your locality and nearest station, and your free hours. We shortlist two or three ICSE maths tutors, you choose one for a free demo class, and a later change of tutor is free. An ID check is part of joining for every tutor. The written paper carries 80 marks and internal assessment adds 20. In the CISCE specimen paper for 2026, Section A is compulsory, worth 40 marks and spans the whole syllabus with short questions including multiple choice. Section B is worth 40 marks, and the candidate answers any four of its longer questions.
Commercial mathematics (GST, recurring deposits, shares and dividends), matrices, loci and reflection are the units other boards leave out, so students and tutors from other boards are least familiar with them. Trigonometric identities and reading an ogive accurately also cost marks. A regular ICSE tutor plans extra time for each.
CISCE papers warn that leaving out essential working costs marks, and examiners award marks step by step. A bare answer, a geometry statement with no reason, or rough work on a separate sheet can all lose credit. A tutor should correct the layout of every answer, every session, until it becomes habit.
Yes. A student joining ICSE from the State Board usually needs commercial mathematics, matrices and a fuller written style for proofs. The tutor lists the gaps against the CISCE syllabus and teaches them first, then moves to ICSE past papers. With regular sessions this usually takes weeks, not a whole year.
From the 2027 examination, ISC Mathematics no longer offers a choice between Section B and Section C. Every candidate studies the same seven units, from relations and functions to probability, with an 80-mark paper and 20 marks for project work. ISC Applied Mathematics is a separate subject for commerce-minded students.
Two sessions a week through most of Class 10 is usual, rising to three in the pre-board weeks when full papers and the Section B choice are practised under time. Classes 6 to 8 usually need one session a week, mainly to keep written working tidy and close small gaps early.
