Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Chennai's commerce students split across the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE, CISCE and, in a smaller group of schools, Cambridge and the IB. The accountancy they meet in Class 11 looks familiar from board to board (journal, ledger, trial balance, final accounts), but the textbooks, the projects and the Class 12 options differ enough that the wrong tutor can pull a student in the wrong direction. This page helps you pick the right kind of tutor, then looks at how one reaches your neighbourhood by MRTS, suburban train, metro or road. For the syllabus in depth, see our national accountancy home tutor guide.
| Route | Assessment in outline | The tutor you want |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu State Board, Classes 11–12 | Higher secondary papers set by the state board on its own textbooks | Someone who teaches from the State Board book and its past papers |
| CBSE Accountancy (055) | A three-hour theory paper for 80 marks and project work for 20, in each of Classes 11 and 12 | Fluent in NCERT formats and the Class 12 option your school runs |
| ISC Accounts (858) and Commerce (857) | Three-hour, 80-mark papers; two 10-mark projects per subject per year | Comfortable with long 12-mark questions and the ISC Section choice |
| Cambridge IGCSE (0452) and AS/A Level (9706) Accounting | IGCSE: a multiple-choice paper and a structured paper; A Level adds cost and management accounting | Has taught Cambridge past papers by syllabus code |
IB Diploma students have no separate accounting course; the IBO lists Business Management and Economics among the neighbouring subjects, so name the Business Management unit if that is where help is needed. CBSE commerce students usually take Business Studies (054) beside accountancy. One is written and point-based, the other exact, and a student is often strong in one only, so tell us which needs the help.
A large share of Chennai's children study under the Tamil Nadu State Board, and many stay with it for the higher secondary years, taking accountancy within a commerce group. We describe the course only broadly. The board publishes the syllabus, the paper design and the exam timetable itself, and a tutor should work from those official documents rather than from memory or a guide meant for another board.
In practice, ask a State Board accountancy tutor three things. Do they teach from the current State Board textbook in the order your child's school uses? Do they practise on the board's own past and model papers? And do they build the basics that every board rewards: entries reasoned from the accounting equation, adjustments shown in both places in the final accounts, working notes, and theory answers in proper terms? If your child moved from the State Board to CBSE or ISC for Class 11, tell us; the ideas carry over, but the textbook and the marking change.
| Board | Compulsory | Choice for the last 20 theory marks | Coursework |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBSE | Partnership firms (36) and company accounts (24) | Analysis of financial statements (12) and cash flow (8), or Computerised Accounting | Project file 12 and viva 8; practical work in place of the project for Computerised Accounting |
| ISC | Section A, partnership and joint stock companies (60) | Section B, statement analysis and cash flow, or Section C, spreadsheets and databases | Two projects of 10 marks |
The fork matters because the skills differ. Ratio analysis and cash flow classification are paper-based reasoning; spreadsheets and databases are software skills. Check with the school before the demo. In Class 11, CBSE makes Computerised Accounting compulsory and includes basic GST in recording transactions, while CBSE's suggested question design reserves about 30% of the theory marks for analysis and evaluation, the band where one-to-one teaching makes the clearest difference.
A small example shows the kind of slip a tutor catches early. A firm buys a machine for ₹1,00,000 on 1 October and charges depreciation at 10% a year on the straight-line method, closing its books on 31 March. The charge for that first year is for six months only: ₹5,000, not ₹10,000. A student who charges the full year overstates the expense, understates profit and shows the machine at the wrong value in the balance sheet, and the same error then carries into the next year's figures. On every board, part-year depreciation is one of the places where a student who understands the idea and a student who has memorised a formula part company. A tutor who asks "how many months did the firm actually own it?" before any arithmetic builds the habit that prevents it.
For central and participating universities, the NTA's CUET (UG) 2026 bulletin lists Accountancy / Book Keeping as domain subject 301: 50 compulsory questions in 60 minutes on the NCERT Class 12 syllabus. State Board and ISC students should ask their tutor to match chapters against NCERT's before practising timed multiple-choice sets. Look up the bulletin for the year your child applies.
Families in every zone can request a home accountancy tutor. The route decides whether a weekly visit holds up, and when it does not, online lessons widen the choice.
The south Chennai and west and north Chennai guides add timing advice, and the Chennai home tuition page lists every neighbourhood.
The case for home lessons in accountancy is simple: mistakes live in individual lines of a ledger or a balance sheet, and a tutor at your child's elbow sees each one as it happens. That is most valuable in Class 11, while double entry is still new. Online lessons work once the tutor can see the page clearly, through a phone on a stand or a writing tablet, and the student photographs homework before the class. For Computerised Accounting or ISC Section C, screen sharing beats a home visit.
Along the OMR, where evening office traffic is heavy, or wherever the nearest suitable tutor lives across the city, a mixed week works well: one home session at the weekend for partnership accounts or final accounts, plus one shorter online session for theory and doubts. Online also opens tutors elsewhere in India for Cambridge costing or an IB Business Management unit.
Keep a recent marked test, the accountancy notebook and the textbook ready. During the class, notice:
The demo class checklist for parents has more. If the fit is wrong, we arrange a demo with the next tutor.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own rates; board, travel and lessons per week shape them, and each fee is shown before the demo. The Chennai home tuition fees guide and our pricing guide say more.
Send the board and class, the Class 12 option if known, the chapters giving trouble, your area and nearest station, good times and your choice of home, online or both. We reply with two or three matched tutors and fees, your child has a free demo class, and changing tutor later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified.
Commerce students often need more than one subject: see economics tutors in Chennai, maths tutors and English tutors, or our board pages for CBSE and ICSE and ISC in Chennai. Weighing up streams before Class 11? Our stream choice guide and Class 11 page were written for Gurugram but explain what commerce involves anywhere. Tutors can see open requests on Chennai tuition jobs.
Yes, on request. Tell us the class and the commerce group your child takes, and we look for tutors who teach from the current State Board textbook and practise on the board's own past and model papers. Details of the paper and the dates should always be checked in the board's official documents.
The double-entry ideas carry over, but the textbook becomes NCERT, the formats and working notes follow CBSE's marking, and a 20-mark project appears each year. In Class 11, CBSE also makes Computerised Accounting compulsory. A tutor should spend the first sessions aligning the student with NCERT's approach.
Often, but office traffic on the OMR is heavy in the evening, so lessons after the rush eases or at weekends hold up better. Gated communities usually need a resident to approve each visitor, so add the tutor as a regular guest. One online session a week helps on the busiest days.
Section A, on partnership and joint stock company accounts, is compulsory for 60 marks. Students then choose Section B, on financial statement analysis and cash flow, or Section C, on spreadsheets and databases, for 20 marks. Two projects of 10 marks each complete the assessment for the year.
Yes, when the tutor can see the notebook clearly through a phone stand or writing tablet and homework is sent ahead. It is especially good for Computerised Accounting and ISC Section C, where both people work in one spreadsheet. Many families mix weekend home lessons with a weekday online session.
Two a week suits most Class 11 and 12 students, with a third added before the board exams. Accountancy is learnt by doing, so two shorter sessions usually achieve more than one long one. The tutor should set a pace after checking the basics in the first few lessons.
