Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

The jump from Class 10 to Class 11 is the steepest in school. A student who scored comfortably in the SSLC or the Class 10 boards can find the first Class 11 physics test unrecognisable: more mathematics inside every chapter, longer derivations, and a pace that assumes the basics are already secure. In Chennai the year also brings a choice of subject group on the Tamil Nadu State Board, or of stream on CBSE and ISC, and for many students the first contact with JEE or NEET preparation. This guide, from Ajay Vatsyayan, who writes on Class 11 and 12 maths and on IB, IGCSE and ISC maths, with the NXTutors Academic Team, covers what Class 11 asks on each board, which subjects need a tutor in each group, a first-term plan, and how to find a tutor who can reach you after school and coaching.
A Class 11 tutor's first job is to stop that drift: keep every chapter understood as it is taught, and turn homework into practice rather than copying.
On the Tamil Nadu State Board, Class 11 is the first year of the Higher Secondary course, which the Directorate of Government Examinations' own site labels HSC (+1). The Directorate publishes a complete first-year question set alongside the second-year one, including the March 2026 papers, and posts sample question papers marked for Class 11, so families should treat this year's examination seriously. How the first-year result counts towards later admissions is a question to put to the school and to check on the Directorate's site.
The March 2026 first-year papers give a useful picture of the subject range and weighting:
| Subject area | Papers in the set | Written paper as printed |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | Mathematics; Business Mathematics and Statistics | 3 hours, 90 marks each |
| Sciences | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Botany, Zoology | 3 hours, 70 marks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| Commerce | Accountancy, Commerce, Economics | 3 hours, 90 marks each |
| Computing | Computer Science, Computer Applications | Separate papers |
| Humanities and others | History, Geography, Political Science, Statistics, vocational subjects | Separate papers |
Subject papers were printed in a Tamil and an English version. The science papers carry fewer written marks than maths; ask the school how the rest of the subject is assessed. Which subjects go together in a group depends on what your child's school offers, so start from the timetable, not from a list. Our Tamil Nadu Board tutors in Chennai page covers the State Board across classes.
| Board | Structure | Point to settle early |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | A composite Class 11-12 course; maths 80 theory + 20 internal, physics and chemistry 70 + 30 | Mathematics or Applied Mathematics; they cannot be taken together |
| ISC | English plus three to five electives, six subjects at most | No subject change after 15 September of Class 11 |
| IB Diploma | Six subject groups, three or four at Higher Level, with Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS | The HL choices, especially Mathematics Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation |
Both national tests are conducted by the NTA and draw heavily on the Class 11 syllabus, which is why many Chennai students begin preparing now. As described in the 2026 bulletins, JEE (Main) Paper 1 is a three-hour computer-based test of 75 questions for 300 marks, held in two sessions, while NEET (UG) is a pen-and-paper test of 180 questions for 720 marks. Neither replaces the school course: a student who neglects Class 11 board chapters for mock tests usually pays for it twice.
Our JEE and NEET home tutor pages for Chennai explain how a tutor works alongside coaching. Check the current bulletin on jeemain.nta.nic.in or neet.nta.nic.in before fixing any plan.
Some Chennai students finish the SSLC and move to a CBSE school for Class 11, and others travel the opposite way, from CBSE or ICSE into the State Board's higher secondary course. Either move changes the textbooks, the order of chapters and the style of answer the examiner expects, and for State Board students it may also change the language in which papers are written. The first few weeks decide whether the switch feels manageable.
| Zone | How a tutor gets in | Slot to aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Velachery, Guindy & Tambaram | MRTS to Velachery, then an auto | Before or after the Vijayanagar junction peak |
| OMR & ECR | By road from Thoraipakkam, Medavakkam or Navalur; no metro yet | After the evening office peak, or weekends |
| Anna Nagar, Kilpauk & Aminjikarai | Green Line to Kilpauk Medical College or Nehru Park | Metro plus a short walk beats driving on Poonamallee High Road |
| Vadapalani, KK Nagar & Porur | By road, since Porur's metro stations are still being built | Late afternoon or weekends, away from Porur Junction's rush |
| Mogappair, Ambattur & Avadi | Arakkonam-line local train to Ambattur or Pattaravakkam | Late afternoon or weekends |
| Perambur, Kolathur & North Chennai | Three suburban stations in Perambur alone | A little earlier than the evening market crowd |
Class 11 students often have school, coaching and travel back to back, which makes online lessons attractive for late-evening doubt sessions and for narrow specialisms such as ISC maths or IB Higher Level. Physics and maths problem-solving still benefit from a tutor at the table, at least once a week, because the tutor needs to see where a derivation goes wrong. A weekend home session plus one or two shorter online sessions on weekdays is a workable pattern.
The first class with your chosen tutor is a free demo, and switching later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check; it is not a police or background check.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Entrance-oriented teaching and IB Higher Level command more than board-only help. Fees are visible on the shortlist before the demo; read the Chennai home tuition fees guide and our pricing guide.
Velachery's MRTS line now continues past it to St Thomas Mount, which widens the pool of tutors who can arrive by train. Sholinganallur's large gated communities register every visitor, so add the tutor as a regular guest before the demo. Kilpauk has two Green Line stations within reach, and Porur is reached by road until its metro stations open.
In Ambattur, colony houses mean a doorstep visit, and tutors on the Arakkonam line arrive by local train. Perambur, with its old railway workshops, has more stations than most localities its size.

The Directorate of Government Examinations publishes a full Higher Secondary first-year question set, including the March 2026 papers, as well as sample papers labelled for Class 11. So the plus-one year is examined, not just taught. Ask the school, and check the Directorate's site, for how first-year marks are used.
In the first-year set on the Directorate's site, Mathematics was a three-hour, 90-mark written paper, and Physics, Chemistry and Biology were three-hour, 70-mark papers. Each was printed in Tamil and English versions. Confirm how the remaining marks in science subjects are assessed with your child's school.
Because the work changes shape. Physics needs vectors and calculus early, the volume roughly doubles, and memorised answers no longer carry a student through unfamiliar problems. Many students also relax when there is no board exam. A tutor who keeps every chapter understood as it is taught prevents the gap from reaching Class 12.
Many do, because both tests draw heavily on Class 11. JEE (Main) Paper 1 is a three-hour computer-based test of 75 questions; NEET (UG) is a pen-and-paper test of 180 questions. Entrance practice should support the school course, not replace it. Check the current NTA bulletin before planning.
In a maths and science group, maths first, because physics depends on it. For biology students, physics is often the weak point. In commerce, accountancy usually comes first, since it is new and cumulative. One focused tutor is better than several thin ones in the first term.
Only until 15 September of Class 11, under the CISCE regulations. ISC students take English plus three to five electives, with six subjects at most. If your child is unsure about a subject, decide with the school before that date, and tell the tutor so the plan covers the right papers.
For late-evening doubt sessions and narrow specialisms such as ISC maths or IB Higher Level, yes. For physics and maths problem-solving, a weekly session at the table still helps, because the tutor sees exactly where working goes wrong. Many students combine a weekend home lesson with shorter online sessions.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with Classes 11 and 12, IB and IGCSE, and entrance work toward the upper end. Entrance-focused or IB Higher Level teaching costs more than board-only help. Each tutor's fee is shown before the free demo.
