What home tuition costs in Chennai

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

English tutors in Chennai: from first readers to board literature

English tuition in Chennai covers a wide span. At one end is a six-year-old who still guesses at words. In the middle is a Class 9 or 10 student on the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE or ICSE who understands the lessons but writes answers that do not earn the marks. At the far end is an ISC, IGCSE or IB student who must write at length and analyse texts they have never seen. Each needs a different kind of teacher. This page explains how the boards in Chennai examine English, what a tutor should do at each stage, and how tutors reach each part of the city by train, metro or road. For more on the subject itself, see the national English home tutor guide.

What each Chennai board asks for in English

Tamil Nadu State Board English

A large share of Chennai's children study under the Tamil Nadu State Board. We keep our description general: the board has a public examination at the end of Class 10 and the higher secondary course across Classes 11 and 12, and the scheme and calendar come from the state's official notices each year.

A State Board English tutor should work straight from the prescribed textbook, keep pace with the school's term tests, and practise the kinds of question the board sets using its past papers. Beyond that, the skills are the ones every board rewards: reading a passage closely, writing to a clear plan, and fixing grammar inside the student's own sentences. If your child is moving from the State Board to CBSE or ICSE for Class 11, tell us, because the jump in literature and extended writing is large and a term of focused help makes it far smoother.

What English tuition should do at each stage

  • Early readers (up to Class 2). Letter sounds, blending and reading aloud every session, in short bursts of twenty to thirty minutes. Home lessons suit this age, because the tutor has to hear every word.
  • Classes 3 to 5. Fluency, simple comprehension, spelling patterns, and writing a paragraph with a beginning, middle and end.
  • Classes 6 to 8. Grammar taught from the student's own mistakes, letters and short compositions, and the first "why" questions about a story or poem.
  • Classes 9 and 10. Board formats, unseen passages under time, and literature answers that stay inside the word limit. Our demo class checklist helps at this stage too.
  • Classes 11 and 12. Longer compositions, critical reading and project work. For CBSE, the books are Hornbill and Snapshots in Class 11, Flamingo and Vistas in Class 12.

ICSE and ISC English: the timed-writing boards

CISCE examines English as two subjects, which puts far more weight on sustained writing than CBSE does. ICSE Paper 1 asks for a 300 to 350 word composition, a letter, a notice with a matching e-mail, a roughly 500-word unseen passage with vocabulary and a summary, and a grammar question; the language internal assessment splits 10 marks for listening and 10 for speaking. ISC raises the stakes: a composition of 400 to 450 words chosen from six topics, directed writing, a proposal, grammar and comprehension, and a literature paper that asks about a poem's style as well as its meaning.

The tutor's most valuable contribution here is regular writing against the clock, with marking that shows exactly where marks went. Our guides to ICSE Class 10 English and ISC Class 12 English go through the questions.

IGCSE and IB English

For IGCSE, check the entry with the school before tuition begins. First Language English 0500 rewards analysis of a writer's choices and extended composition, with an optional speaking and listening test reported separately. English as a Second Language 0510 weights reading and writing at 70% and listening at 30%, with speaking reported separately. IB Language A: Language and Literature asks for guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts, a comparative essay on two literary works, and a 15-minute oral; the SL weighting is 35, 35 and 30 per cent. A tutor can coach analysis and give feedback on plans, but coursework and oral preparation must be the student's own.

Five signs English needs attention

  1. Your child avoids reading aloud. Listen to one page: skipped words, guessing from the first letter or losing the line all point to a fluency gap, not a lack of interest.
  2. Answers are right but marks are low. The idea is there, but the answer runs past the word limit, misses the question's key word or has no structure.
  3. The same grammar slips return. Tense changes mid-paragraph, missing articles or agreement errors survive every school correction.
  4. Papers go unfinished. Compositions are cut short, or the comprehension is skipped, in two- and three-hour exams.
  5. A board change is coming. A move from the State Board to CBSE or ICSE, or into an IGCSE school, raises the reading and writing load at once.

How an English tutor reaches your part of Chennai

Chennai's suburban trains, MRTS and metro let a tutor travel further than roads alone would allow, but not every neighbourhood has a station. Six example neighbourhoods are linked below.

Home or online English lessons in Chennai?

Home lessons are the better choice for early reading and for children who need a teacher beside them to stay on task. From about Class 3, online English works well if written work reaches the tutor in a shared document or as photos and comes back marked. It suits IGCSE, IB and ISC students in particular, because the specialist who fits may live in another city. On the OMR, where most tutors travel by road, a weekly home lesson plus an online session on the busiest weekday is a practical balance.

During the free demo

Bring a recent piece of marked writing and watch for these:

  • The tutor reads your child's work before teaching anything.
  • They know the paper by name: State Board, CBSE, ICSE, ISC, IGCSE (with its code) or IB.
  • Your child writes or speaks for much of the class instead of listening.
  • Feedback is focused on two or three changes, and your child rewrites one paragraph using it.
  • For a young child, the tutor listens to reading aloud and corrects gently.

If the fit is wrong, we arrange a demo with another tutor from your shortlist; switching later is free.

English Home Tutor in Chennai: common questions

What do Chennai parents pay an English tutor for reading or board-year writing?

Each tutor's fee is shown before the free demo.

What details should I send to book an English home tutor in Chennai?

To book an English home tutor in Chennai, send the class and board, the main worry, your area with the nearest station and preferred times. We shortlist two or three matched English tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Can a Chennai English tutor teach from the Tamil Nadu State Board textbooks?

Yes, a Chennai English tutor can teach from the Tamil Nadu State Board textbooks; tell us the class and the school's book. We look for tutors who keep pace with term tests and practise the board's question style on its past papers. Take the exam scheme and calendar from the state's official notices each year.

Will English feel harder after a Chennai student moves from State Board to CBSE in Class 11?

English usually feels different, and often harder, after a Chennai student moves from the State Board to CBSE in Class 11. CBSE English Core in Class 11 gives reading 26, grammar and creative writing 23 and literature 31 marks, from Hornbill and Snapshots. Literature answers and longer writing are where a term of tutoring helps most.

How is ISC English Language and Literature examined for Chennai students?

ISC English for Chennai students is two subjects, Language and Literature, each a three-hour, 80-mark paper with 20 marks of project work. The language paper includes a 400 to 450 word composition from six topics, directed writing, a proposal, grammar and comprehension. Literature also asks about a poem's style, so timed writing is the core of preparation.

What does ICSE English Paper 1 ask of a Chennai Class 10 student?

ICSE English Paper 1 asks a Chennai Class 10 student for a 300 to 350 word composition, a letter, and a notice with a matching e-mail. It also sets an unseen passage of about 500 words with vocabulary and a summary, plus a grammar question. Internal assessment splits 10 marks for listening and 10 for speaking.

My young child in Chennai still guesses at words; will an English home tutor help?

Yes, a home tutor in Chennai can help a young child who struggles to read, using systematic work on letter sounds, blending and reading aloud. Sessions of twenty to thirty minutes suit this age. Home lessons work better than online here, because the tutor has to hear every word.

Which signs show a Chennai child's English needs a tutor?

A Chennai child's English needs attention when they avoid reading aloud, skip words or guess from the first letter. Other signs are right ideas earning low marks, the same grammar slips surviving school corrections, unfinished compositions in timed papers, or a coming board change. Listening to one page read aloud is a quick first test.

Is online English tuition a good option for IGCSE or IB students in Chennai?

Online English tuition is often a good option for IGCSE or IB students in Chennai, because specialists in First Language 0500, Second Language 0510 or IB Language A are fewer. Unseen-text analysis and oral practice work on a video call. Written work must be shared and marked before the next lesson, and coursework must stay the student's own.

Can an English tutor travel to an OMR home in Chennai every week?

An English tutor can travel to an OMR home in Chennai weekly, though most come by road because Perungudi is the corridor's only MRTS station. Add the tutor to your society app as a regular guest before the demo, and set lessons after the evening office rush or at weekends. One online session a week also helps.
