A Chennai student taking biology in Class 11 meets a subject that rewards precision above all: exact terms, correctly ordered processes and diagrams labelled the way the examiner expects. Add NEET, where biology is half the paper and a wrong guess costs a mark, and it is easy to see why families look for a specialist rather than a general science tutor. This page covers the Tamil Nadu higher secondary course in general terms, the CBSE and ISC papers, the international boards and NEET, plus how biology tutors reach each part of Chennai. The national biology home tutor guide has more on the subject.
| Board or exam | Assessment in outline | Ask the tutor |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu State Board | Biology in the two higher secondary years, taught from state textbooks and examined by the state board | Have you taught the current state books recently? |
| CBSE | Theory 70 and practical 30 in each of Classes 11 and 12 | How do you teach Genetics and Evolution? |
| ISC | Class 12: 70 theory, 15 practical, 10 project, 5 practical file | How do you plan the project alongside theory? |
| NEET (UG) | Half the questions are biology, botany and zoology together, on the 2026 pattern | How do you analyse a mock? |
| IGCSE | Cambridge 0610 with a practical or alternative paper at 20%, or Edexcel 4BI1 with two written papers | Which board and tier have you taught? |
| IB | SL or HL; external papers 80%, scientific investigation 20% | Where does your help on the investigation stop? |
For Classes 6 to 10, biology sits inside science on most boards; see our science home tutors in Chennai for those years.
A large share of Chennai's students follow the Tamil Nadu State Board, and those in the science stream take biology across the two higher secondary years. We describe this generally, because the syllabus, paper design and calendar come from the state's own notices, and those should be the reference for any tutor.
A State Board biology tutor should teach from the state textbooks, keep up with the school's term tests and use the board's past papers for timed answers. For students also sitting NEET, the tutor should do one more job: compare the state chapters with the syllabus the National Medical Commission notifies for NEET, and add NCERT reading where the two differ, so the student is not caught out by content or phrasing they have never met. Ask how the tutor handles this before you commit.
NEET (UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Its 2026 information bulletin set 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions over 180 minutes, 45 in physics, 45 in chemistry and 90 in biology, for 720 marks, with four marks gained for each correct answer and one lost for each wrong one. Biology marks were the first tie-breaker. The 2027 bulletin had not appeared when we wrote this, so use neet.nta.nic.in for current details.
What helps most is specific: testing NCERT content line by line, including tables and diagram labels; reviewing every mock chapter by chapter; and training the student to leave a question rather than guess when unsure. For a student in coaching, the tutor fills the gaps the batch cannot; for one without, the tutor also sets the plan. See our NEET home tutor page and the NCERT-first NEET biology article.
In CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum, Class 11 biology is led by Human Physiology at 18 marks, with Diversity of Living Organisms and Cell: Structure and Function at 15 each, Plant Physiology 12 and Structural Organisation 10. Class 12 is led by Genetics and Evolution at 20 and Reproduction at 16. The 30 practical marks each year come from experiments, slides, spotting, the record and a project with viva.
ISC Class 12 weights Reproduction at 16, Genetics and Evolution and Ecology and Environment at 15 each, Biology and Human Welfare at 14 and Biotechnology at 10. ISC answers are marked on detail: named structures, correct terms and complete explanations, usually with a diagram.
Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 is taken at Core (grades C to G) or Extended (A* to G), with a 45-minute multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component worth 20%. Edexcel International GCSE 4BI1 is untiered, graded 9 to 1, with two written papers. The Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE comparison is a useful starting point. IB Biology runs 150 hours at SL and 240 at HL around four linked themes; tutors help by tying ideas together across the course and by practising data-based questions, while the investigation remains the student's own work.
Senior biology is a two-year course, and Class 11 chapters return in the final board year and in NEET. A plan to adapt to your school's calendar:
In the free demo, ask the tutor to teach a chapter your child finds hard and see whether these steps appear. If the fit is wrong, we set up a demo with the next tutor on your list, and switching later is free.
Rail decides a lot in Chennai. The suburban lines, the MRTS and the metro let a tutor from one side of the city teach on the other, while the OMR and parts of the west still rely on roads. One neighbourhood is linked in six of the eight zones.
| Zone | Getting there | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore | MRTS to Kasturba Nagar, Indira Nagar or Thiruvanmiyur | Besant Nagar has no station, so the last leg is by auto |
| T Nagar, Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam (e.g. Nungambakkam) | South Line suburban trains; Thousand Lights on the Blue Line | Train-riding tutors tend to be more punctual than drivers |
| Velachery, Guindy and Tambaram (e.g. Pallikaranai) | No station in Pallikaranai or Medavakkam yet; two-wheeler from nearby | A tutor from Velachery or Madipakkam is practical |
| OMR and ECR (e.g. Perungudi) | Perungudi MRTS; otherwise road, as the metro here is under construction | Online suits specialist boards if no home tutor fits |
| Anna Nagar, Kilpauk and Aminjikarai (e.g. Anna Nagar West) | Green Line stations through Anna Nagar; a large bus terminal in Anna Nagar West | The grid of avenues makes homes easy to find |
| Vadapalani, KK Nagar and Porur (e.g. Virugambakkam) | Metro to Vadapalani, then bus or auto along Arcot Road | Late afternoon or weekends avoid Porur Junction traffic |
| Mogappair, Ambattur and Avadi (e.g. Mogappair) | Mogappair by bus or via Thirumangalam metro; Ambattur and Avadi by local train | Ask how the tutor plans to travel before booking |
| Perambur, Kolathur and North Chennai | Suburban trains and the Blue Line's northern stations | Parking near market streets is tight |
Our Chennai home tuition page lists every area, and the west and north Chennai tuition guide covers those suburbs in more depth.
Senior biology adapts well to online lessons: diagrams on a tablet, mock papers on a shared screen, and a wider choice of NEET, IGCSE and IB specialists. Home lessons suit a student who needs the discipline of someone at the table and a family that wants the tutor to see the practical record in person. For homes a long way from any station, a mix of one home and one online session each week is often the steadiest arrangement.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Higher secondary, NEET, IGCSE and IB biology generally sit in that upper part. Tutors set their own fees and you see each one before the demo. See our Chennai fees guide.

Yes, Chennai families can request Tamil Nadu State Board biology tutors who teach from the state textbooks and use the board's past papers. They keep up with term tests and set timed answers. If NEET is planned, the tutor should add NCERT reading where needed. Take exam details from the state's official notices.
A Chennai State Board student is not necessarily at a disadvantage in NEET biology, but preparation needs care, because NEET follows the NMC syllabus, which leans on NCERT. A good tutor compares state chapters with that syllabus, fills gaps with NCERT reading and practises objective questions beside board answers.
For Chennai aspirants, biology was 90 of the 180 compulsory NEET (UG) 2026 questions, across botany and zoology, in a 720-mark, 180-minute paper. Each correct answer earned four marks and each wrong answer lost one, and biology marks were the first tie-breaker. Confirm the next pattern on neet.nta.nic.in.
For Chennai students, Human Physiology leads CBSE Class 11 biology at 18 marks, and Genetics and Evolution leads Class 12 at 20, followed by Reproduction at 16. Each year adds 30 practical marks from experiments, slides, spotting, the record and a project with viva, under the 2026-27 curriculum.
For Chennai students, ISC Class 12 biology has a 70-mark theory paper, a 15-mark practical, 10 marks of project work and a 5-mark practical file. Reproduction leads the theory at 16 marks, with Genetics and Evolution and Ecology and Environment at 15 each. Answers are marked on named structures and exact terms.
A biology tutor can usually come to Pallikaranai or Medavakkam in Chennai by two-wheeler, since neither has a station yet. A tutor living in Velachery, Madipakkam or Medavakkam itself is the practical choice. Share gate details and fix a slot away from the evening office rush.
IGCSE biology tuition in Chennai should give the practical paper steady attention for Cambridge 0610, where the practical test or alternative is worth 20%. The alternative asks students to describe methods, read scales and plot graphs without apparatus. Edexcel 4BI1 assesses practical skills inside its two written papers instead.
Online biology tuition suits many Chennai senior students, with diagrams on a tablet, mock papers on a shared screen and a wider choice of NEET, IGCSE and IB specialists. Home lessons suit students who need someone at the table, or families wanting the practical record seen in person. Far from a station, mix one of each.
A Chennai student should plan Class 11 and 12 biology as one two-year course, since Class 11 chapters return in the board year and in NEET. Build a one-page diagram sheet per chapter, consolidate Human Physiology and Cell before the summer, and do weekly inheritance problems early in Class 12.
