Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

In Class 12 two clocks run at once. One counts down to the board examination: on the Tamil Nadu State Board, the Higher Secondary second-year papers set by the Directorate of Government Examinations; elsewhere, CBSE, ISC or the IB Diploma. The other counts down to JEE, NEET or CUET. A home tutor's value this year is making both clocks work for your child rather than against them. This guide, from Ajay Vatsyayan, who writes on Class 11 and 12 maths and on IB, IGCSE and ISC maths, with the NXTutors Academic Team, explains how the final-year papers are built, why board marks still matter, how to divide the year, when one specialist per subject makes sense, and how tutors reach homes across Chennai in a year with very little spare time.
The Directorate of Government Examinations conducts the Class 12 board examination for State Board students, and describes the Class 12 mark certificate as a vital document for higher education and for jobs. Its site lists the second year as HSC (+2) and publishes past papers, including the full March 2026 set, plus sample papers for Class 12. Those March 2026 papers show how marks were distributed:
| Subject | Time and marks | What the layout means for practice |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 3 hours, 90 marks | 20 one-mark questions, then 7 each of two-, three- and five-mark answers; long answers carry 35 of the 90 |
| Physics, Chemistry, Biology | 3 hours, 70 marks each | Ask the school how the rest of the subject is assessed; drill derivations, equations and diagrams |
| Computer Science | 3 hours, 70 marks | Programming logic written by hand, under time |
| Accountancy, Commerce, Economics, Business Mathematics and Statistics | 3 hours, 90 marks each | Accountancy and Commerce used the same four-part spread as maths |
Papers were printed in a Tamil and an English version. For a student who does not clear a subject in the March or April examination, the Directorate holds special supplementary examinations. Take the current scheme from the Directorate's own notices. Our Tamil Nadu Board tutors in Chennai page covers the State Board across classes.
Because the tests themselves set board conditions. As the JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin describes it, candidates seeking admission through it must also meet a Class 12 performance condition: 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of their board. JEE (Advanced) 2026 was open to the top 2,50,000 JEE (Main) candidates. NEET (UG) is a single exam whose eligibility rests on Class 12 subjects. CUET (UG), also run by the NTA, is used for admission by central and participating universities. And the State Board's own mark certificate, in the Directorate's words, is vital for continuing higher education.
So a tutor who drills only entrance questions while board answers stay weak is a risk. See our JEE and NEET pages for Chennai, and check every condition in the current bulletin.
| Stretch | Board work | Entrance work |
|---|---|---|
| First term | New chapters, one written test per chapter; practicals and projects started early | Topic-wise problems on the same chapters |
| Middle months | Finish the syllabus; first full board papers | Mixed mock tests; the first JEE (Main) session usually falls early in the year |
| Revision and pre-boards | Past and sample papers under time, marked strictly | Shorter, targeted entrance practice |
| Board exams | Only board revision | Paused |
| After the boards | Done | Full-time entrance revision and mocks |
In earlier years one tutor can cover two subjects. In Class 12 the depth needed in each subject, especially with an entrance test in view, makes a specialist worth the extra cost. A common pattern is a maths tutor and a physics tutor for engineering aspirants, a physics and a chemistry tutor for NEET, and an accountancy tutor plus an economics tutor for commerce. See our maths, physics, chemistry and commerce pages for Chennai. The organic and inorganic chemistry guide is useful whichever board your child is on.
When a student already attends coaching, a home tutor has a different job: catching the topics the class moved past too quickly, checking written board answers that coaching rarely marks, and keeping a weekly record of mock-test errors. Agree the split in the first week. The tutor should see the coaching schedule, and the two should never be teaching the same chapter in the same week.
Families often add tutors until the week has no air left in it. Before booking a third or fourth specialist, write the week out with school, coaching and travel included. One workable shape for a State Board or CBSE student preparing for an engineering entrance test:
| Slot | What happens | Why it is there |
|---|---|---|
| Two weekday evenings | Coaching classes | Entrance problem practice in a group |
| One weekday evening | Maths tutor at home, ninety minutes | Board-style long answers and the topics coaching rushed |
| One weekday, late | Physics tutor online, forty-five minutes | Doubts from the week, without anyone travelling |
| Saturday morning | A full board paper, timed, at the dining table | Exam stamina and presentation |
| Saturday afternoon | Tutor marks the paper with the student | Every lost mark explained |
| Sunday | Light revision and rest | Sleep is part of the plan, not a reward |
A NEET aspirant would swap the maths tutor for chemistry or physics; a commerce student would put accountancy in the long slot. The principle stays the same: one marked full paper every week matters more than one extra class.
| Zone | Way in | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| T Nagar, Nungambakkam & Kodambakkam | Nungambakkam's busy suburban station, or Thousand Lights on the Blue Line next door | Late afternoon or weekends, away from the High Road rush |
| Velachery, Guindy & Tambaram | Two-wheeler from Velachery, Madipakkam or Pallikaranai; no rail in Medavakkam yet | Late afternoon or weekend, clear of the junction |
| OMR & ECR | Two-wheeler, bus or shared auto; the radial road brings tutors from the GST Road side | Outside office hours at the OMR junction |
| Anna Nagar, Kilpauk & Aminjikarai | Green Line to Kilpauk Medical College or Nehru Park, or a train to Chennai Central | Earlier evening slots, before the High Road fills |
| Vadapalani, KK Nagar & Porur | Green Line to Vadapalani | Arcot Road is heavy at office hours |
| Mogappair, Ambattur & Avadi | Local train to Avadi, where many services terminate | Share gate details for defence areas in advance |
Time is the scarcest thing in Class 12, so online earns a bigger role. A late-evening online session for doubts, or a specialist for ISC maths or IB Higher Level who lives far away, saves hours of travel. Keep at least one weekly session at the table for maths and physics, where the tutor must watch long working, and for full papers written under exam conditions at home. In parts of the city where the metro is still being built, such as the OMR and Porur, a single weekend visit plus online weekday sessions is often the only arrangement that survives until the board exams.
The first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo, and switching later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check; it confirms identity and is not a police or background check.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. With separate specialists, compare the weekly total, not just the hourly rate. Each fee is shown before the demo; see the Chennai fees guide and our pricing guide.
Nungambakkam's apartment buildings often have a watchman register and little visitor parking, so a tutor on a two-wheeler or dropped by cab arrives more easily than one driving. Medavakkam, still waiting for its Red Line stations, depends on tutors who come by road. In Thoraipakkam, gated communities ask for visitor registration and sometimes resident approval.
Purasawalkam's market streets leave little parking, so a tutor arriving by metro or bus is quicker. Vadapalani has a Green Line station and a large bus terminus, and in Avadi many tutors arrive by local train and finish by auto.

The Directorate of Government Examinations, which conducts the board examinations for State Board students in Class 10 and Class 12 and calls the mark certificate a vital document for higher education. Its site publishes Higher Secondary second-year past papers and sample papers. Confirm the current scheme from its notices before planning.
Mathematics was a three-hour, 90-mark paper: 20 one-mark questions, then seven two-mark, seven three-mark and seven five-mark questions, printed in Tamil and English versions. The five-mark answers alone carried 35 marks, so a tutor should train full, well-presented solutions under time, not just quick final answers.
Yes. The JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin sets a Class 12 condition of 75% aggregate, or 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, or a place in the top 20 percentile of the board. Board answers and entrance practice should run together all year, with board revision taking over before the exams.
Usually one specialist per weak subject. Class 12 depth, especially with JEE, NEET or CUET in view, is hard for one person to cover across subjects. Typical pairs are maths and physics for engineering, physics and chemistry for NEET, and accountancy plus economics for commerce.
By doing what coaching cannot: going back over topics the class rushed, marking written board answers, and tracking mock-test mistakes week by week. Share the coaching timetable at the demo so the tutor never teaches the same chapter in the same week, and agree the split in writing.
The Directorate of Government Examinations holds special supplementary examinations for Class 12 students who do not clear the March or April examinations. Check its site for the current notification. A tutor can help plan focused revision for the subjects concerned without losing sight of any entrance test.
Often, because time is short. Late-evening online doubt sessions and far-away specialists for ISC maths or IB Higher Level save travel. Keep at least one weekly session at the table for maths and physics working and for timed full papers, where the tutor needs to see every step.
