Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Economics is one subject with many exams in Chennai. A higher secondary student on the Tamil Nadu State Board works from the state textbook; a CBSE student balances statistics, theory and a long project; an ISC student writes extended answers; and students in Cambridge and IB schools face data responses, essays and, for the IB, an internal assessment portfolio. We match tutors to the exam first and to the neighbourhood second. This page shows how the courses compare, how to schedule lessons around Chennai's traffic, and what to look for in the free demo. Our national economics home tutor guide covers every board in more depth.
| Course | Assessment | Where tutoring helps most |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu State Board, higher secondary | State textbooks and board papers for Classes 11 and 12 | Following the state book closely and practising past papers |
| CBSE Economics (030) | Theory 80 marks and project 20, in both years | Statistics working, macro numericals, project viva |
| ISC Economics (856) | Theory 80 (20 short-answer, 60 from five 12-mark questions); projects 20 | Long answers completed to time |
| Cambridge IGCSE (0455) | Multiple choice, 1 hour, 30%; structured questions, 2 hours, 70% | Exact terms and short structured answers |
| Cambridge AS and A Level (9708) | Four papers across AS and A Level, two of them data response and essays | Essay planning and evaluation |
| IB Economics SL or HL | External papers plus a three-commentary internal assessment | IA technique and, for HL, the policy paper |

Many Chennai students take economics as part of a higher secondary group on the State Board. We keep our description of that course general. Its syllabus, question paper design and exam dates are published by the board, and a tutor should take them from there.
What to ask for is clear enough: a tutor who teaches from the State Board textbook, sets timed practice on the board's past papers, and builds the habits every economics paper rewards. Those habits are exact definitions, diagrams with every axis and curve labelled, numericals with each step written down, and answers that reach a conclusion. Mention the medium your child studies in, and whether they are in Class 11 or 12.
When to start, and how often. Economics rarely needs as many hours as accountancy or maths, but it does need regular written work. One session a week is enough for many Class 11 students, provided each lesson ends with a diagram or a numerical to finish at home and the tutor marks it next time. Two sessions a week makes sense in Class 12, once macroeconomics numericals and long answers on the Indian economy arrive, and in the months of pre-board papers. Students who start in the final term can still gain, but the tutor will usually triage: secure the numericals and diagrams first, because those marks come fastest, and then build longer answers. For IB and A Level students, the rhythm is set by coursework and essay practice rather than by chapters, and the tutor should agree a plan with your child in the first fortnight.
Class 11 divides theory between Statistics for Economics and Introductory Microeconomics, 40 marks each. Class 12 divides it between Introductory Macroeconomics and Indian Economic Development, also 40 each. Within Class 11 microeconomics, consumer's equilibrium and demand and producer behaviour and supply carry 14 marks apiece. The project, 3,500 to 4,000 words, carries 20: relevance 3, research 6, presentation 3, viva 8.
Part I is 20 compulsory marks of short answers across the syllabus; Part II asks for five answers from eight, 12 marks each. Class 11 covers basic concepts, Indian economic development and statistics; Class 12 covers micro theory, income and employment, money and banking, the balance of payments, public finance and national income.
A typical Class 12 numerical makes the point about method. If the marginal propensity to consume is 0.8, the investment multiplier is 1 ÷ (1 − 0.8) = 5, so an increase in investment of ₹100 crore raises income by ₹500 crore. Students often remember the formula but forget to state the MPC, show the substitution or explain what the result means. Examiners reward each of those steps. A tutor who makes the student say the reasoning aloud, then write it, fixes this faster than any amount of silent practice.
The IB and IGCSE are part of Chennai's school mix. IB Economics, assessed in its current form since 2022, examines choices in individual markets, the national economy and the global economy through nine key concepts. SL students sit Paper 1 (extended response) and Paper 2 (data response); HL students add Paper 3, a policy paper in which they use data to recommend a policy. The internal assessment is three commentaries on news extracts, from different units and using different key concepts. A tutor can train the method on other articles; IB rules forbid them from writing or rewriting the student's commentaries. More on the Diploma is on our IB tutors in Chennai page.
Cambridge AS essays arrive in two parts, which hands the student a structure; A Level essays do not, so planning has to be taught. IGCSE Economics, in six sections from the basic economic problem to globalisation, rewards precise vocabulary in its structured paper.
In the NTA's 2026 CUET (UG) bulletin, Economics / Business Economics is domain subject 309, with 50 compulsory questions in 60 minutes based on the NCERT Class 12 syllabus. State Board and ISC students should check where their syllabus departs from NCERT's. The test favours quick recognition and clean short calculations. Confirm details in the bulletin for your admission year.
Any Chennai family can ask for a home economics tutor. The question is whether the slot survives the traffic every week, and where it does not, online lessons open up tutors from elsewhere.
| Zone | What to plan around |
|---|---|
| Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore, e.g. Mylapore | Temple festival days around the tank: move that lesson to a morning or online. Besant Nagar beach evenings are crowded at weekends. |
| T Nagar, Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam, e.g. Nungambakkam | Shopping weekends and festival seasons near the bazaar streets; send a landmark with the house number. |
| Velachery, Guindy and Tambaram, e.g. Tambaram | Kathipara, Vijayanagar and GST Road at office hours; book just before or after. |
| OMR and ECR, e.g. Perungudi | Visitor approval in gated communities; for IB or IGCSE, consider an online tutor if no home tutor fits. |
| Anna Nagar, Kilpauk and Aminjikarai | Parking near the 2nd Avenue shops and Purasawalkam markets; book before the early-evening rush. |
| Vadapalani, KK Nagar and Porur, e.g. KK Nagar | Arcot Road and Porur Junction at office hours; give the sector or road number. |
| Mogappair, Ambattur and Avadi | The Inner Ring Road rush for Mogappair; ask whether the tutor comes by bus, metro to Thirumangalam or two-wheeler. |
| Perambur, Kolathur and North Chennai, e.g. Perambur | Crowded market roads in the evening; a slightly earlier slot works better. |
The south Chennai tuition guide and Chennai home tuition page have more on every area.
Few subjects transfer to a screen as smoothly as economics. Diagrams go on a shared whiteboard, a current news story can be opened by both people, and essays can be marked between lessons. Online lessons also let a family reach an IB HL or A Level specialist who has taught that exact course, wherever they live. A home tutor is still the better choice for a student who loses focus online, for younger IGCSE students, and for early statistics work, where slips are caught as the pencil moves. Plenty of Chennai families use one tutor for both.

Yes, on request. Tell us the class, the subject group and the medium of study, and we look for tutors who teach from the State Board textbook and set timed practice on the board's past papers. The syllabus, paper design and dates should be confirmed in the board's official publications.
In the 2026-27 CBSE curriculum, Class 11 theory is Statistics for Economics for 40 marks and Introductory Microeconomics for 40, with a 20-mark project in addition. Consumer's equilibrium and demand, and producer behaviour and supply, carry 14 marks each, so those diagrams and numericals deserve regular practice.
We can search on request, and online lessons widen the search to tutors across India who have taught the exact course. Ask about the internal assessment, three commentaries on news extracts, and for HL the Paper 3 policy paper. A tutor may coach the method but never write commentaries.
Most weekday slots work, but on temple festival days around the Mylapore tank roads fill up, so move that lesson to a morning or online. A tutor coming by MRTS can use Thirumayilai or Mandaveli station, so mention which one is nearest when you send the request.
For most senior students, yes. Diagrams work on a shared whiteboard, articles are read together and essays are marked between lessons, and online widens the choice for IB HL and A Level. Students who lose focus on screen, and early statistics work, often go better with a tutor at home.
Two sessions a week suits most Class 12 students once macroeconomics numericals and long answers arrive, with one a week often enough in Class 11. What matters more is written work each time: a diagram, a numerical or an answer that the tutor marks at the next lesson.
