Commerce tutor jobs in Chennai: accountancy, commerce, economics

"Commerce" on a Chennai State Board timetable can mean four 90-mark papers, and one of them is maths. Business Mathematics and Statistics is a separate paper from the science group's Mathematics, so a commerce student needs a tutor who teaches that syllabus, not the science one. Getting details like this right is the quickest way to a family's trust.

Who asks for commerce tutors in Chennai

The Directorate of Government Examinations publishes complete question sets for both Higher Secondary years. In the March 2026 sets, Accountancy, Commerce, Economics and Business Mathematics and Statistics were each three-hour papers of 90 marks, and the commerce list also includes Computer Applications and a vocational Office Management and Secretaryship paper. Papers come in Tamil and English versions, so families tell the tutor the school's subject group, the textbook year and the version the student writes.

CBSE commerce students take Accountancy 055, Business Studies 054 and Economics 030, each with an 80-mark theory paper and a 20-mark project, plus a language and often mathematics or applied mathematics; the school chooses the Class 12 accountancy Part B option. ISC students take English with Accounts 858, Commerce 857 and Economics 856. Cambridge Accounting and Economics, and IB Business Management and Economics, form a smaller international stream.

The papers split into two kinds. Accountancy and Business Mathematics are learnt by working many problems in the right format; Commerce, Business Studies and much of Economics are written subjects that reward clear definitions, features and examples. Few tutors are equally strong at both, so families often hire one tutor for the first year and split the help in the second. Practicals and theory papers follow the Directorate's spring schedule, so the final months before March are busy.

A smaller international group takes Cambridge Accounting or Economics at IGCSE or A Level, or IB Business Management and Economics; ask for the syllabus code or IB subject and level, and guide any internal assessment without writing it.

Where in Chennai the work is

Commerce students tend to be free in the late afternoon or evening. Vadapalani, KK Nagar and Porur suits a tutor on the Green Line at Vadapalani or Ashok Nagar, and KK Nagar's numbered sectors are easy to navigate; west of Vadapalani there is no working metro yet, so Arcot Road and Porur depend on bus or road travel outside office hours at Porur Junction. Anna Nagar, Kilpauk and Aminjikarai has Green Line stations within a short walk of most homes.

Perambur, Kolathur and North Chennai has suburban trains to Perambur, Villivakkam and Tondiarpet and the Blue Line to Washermanpet and Tondiarpet, so a tutor without a car can work much of the zone; evening market crowds in Perambur and Royapuram make a slightly earlier slot easier. Accountancy is usually better taught at home, where you can see the format, while commerce theory and economics diagrams can be marked online from photographs.

That split opens the whole city. A family in Mogappair with an accounts tutor down the road can still take economics online from a specialist in Adyar, and an OMR student can keep a weekend home session with weekday online theory.

What families in Chennai expect

  • Name exact papers: State Board Accountancy, Commerce, Economics, Business Mathematics and Statistics; CBSE 055, 054, 030; ISC 858, 857, 856.
  • Know that Business Mathematics and Statistics is a separate syllabus from science Mathematics.
  • Work from the Directorate's question sets and the state textbooks in the student's version.
  • Build accountancy formats through volume of practice.
  • Teach theory answers as definitions, features and examples, marked line by line.
  • Plan the final months around the spring examination schedule.
  • Offer home sessions for accounts and online marking for theory where useful.

How to get picked

State plainly what kind of commerce tutor you are: "State Board +2 Accountancy and Business Maths, English version" or "CBSE Business Studies and Economics, written answers marked in detail". Families who want one tutor for the group will look for range; those who want a specialist will look for depth. Add your line or station and evening hours.

At the demo, use one accounts problem and one theory question from the student's own syllabus. Show the parent where format or definition marks were lost, and propose either a single tutor or a split. Leads, credits and how you get paid are explained in the modules below.

Calendar awareness counts. State Board practicals come in February and theory papers from early March, and CBSE schools follow their own session from April, so a commerce tutor in Chennai may have two revision seasons running side by side. Families also ask about the June or July supplementary examination, which the Directorate opens whatever the number of failed subjects, and about scanned answer scripts and revaluation after results. You do not need to advise on those, but a tutor who knows they exist and can help with a supplementary paper is easier to keep.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

How leads and credits work

Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
