Twenty marks of the State Board SSLC maths paper are about drawing. In the Directorate's sample papers, Part IV holds two 8-mark questions, one a geometric construction to exact measurements and one a graph, and a child who has never practised with compass and graph sheet against the clock gives those marks away. Chennai parents notice details like that, and they hire maths tutors who notice them too.
No open maths requests in Chennai right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.
If you teach maths, NXTutors is free to join. List the boards and classes you know, choose home, online or both, mark the zones your train or metro reaches, and set your own fee, which families see before a free demo. This page covers maths demand in Chennai, the routes that make it workable and how to be chosen.
Many of the city's children study under the Tamil Nadu State Board, whose Directorate of Government Examinations conducts the SSLC at the end of Class 10 and the Higher Secondary, or +2, at the end of Class 12. In the Directorate's Sample Question Paper V, SSLC Mathematics is 100 marks in three hours: 14 one-mark multiple-choice questions, any ten 2-mark and any ten 5-mark questions with one compulsory question inside each set, and the two 8-mark drawing questions. The compulsory questions mean no chapter is truly optional. Many families describe their school as "Matric"; for tuition purposes these children sit the same state papers.
In +2, the sample Mathematics paper is 90 marks: twenty one-mark questions, any seven 2-mark and any seven 3-mark questions, each with one compulsory, and seven 5-mark questions all answered, each with a choice of two. That final part is 35 marks of fully set-out solutions, so speed on short items and patience on long ones both matter. Commerce students take Business Mathematics and Statistics, a separate paper from Mathematics, and need a tutor who teaches that syllabus. Papers are printed in Tamil and English versions, so know which one the student writes.
CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and Cambridge IGCSE make up the rest of the demand. The CBSE session starts in April while State Board schools follow the calendar the state announces, so your busy months can shift by board. JEE aspirants add a further layer, usually one subject beside coaching.
Rail is a real advantage for a Chennai tutor. Suburban trains stop at Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Mambalam and Saidapet; the MRTS runs along the coast through Thirumayilai, Mandaveli, Kasturba Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur to Velachery; and the Blue and Green metro lines cross the city. Housing-board layouts with numbered streets, such as Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar, Ashok Nagar and KK Nagar, make homes easy to find. A tutor near a station can cover a long stretch of line on weekday afternoons.
The OMR is different: mostly flats and gated campuses where a resident approves each visitor, only Perungudi has a station, and many evenings are taken by office traffic. Medavakkam and Pallikaranai also depend on roads. Tutors there usually live nearby, and families often add an online session for doubts. In T Nagar and West Mambalam, a walk from the station or a two-wheeler beats looking for car parking.
Chennai parents compare maths tutors on fit. Make your headline specific: "State Board SSLC and +2 maths, English version, constructions and graphs" or "CBSE Class 10 Standard and ISC maths". Name the station or line you live near and the zones it gives you. A tutor beside the suburban line who lists Mambalam, Saidapet and Chromepet looks more reliable than one claiming the whole city.
In the demo, work one question from the student's recent test, then ask for a quick construction or graph if the student is in SSLC. Show the parent where marks went: a missing step, an inaccurate arc, a graph without a scale. Leave a four-week plan. The modules below explain how you get paid and how leads and credits work.
Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.
Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.
A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.
You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
In the Directorate's Sample Question Paper V: 100 marks, three hours, with 14 one-mark questions, any ten 2-mark and ten 5-mark questions (one compulsory in each set), and two 8-mark questions on construction and graph. Check the Directorate's site each year.
No. Business Mathematics and Statistics is a separate State Board paper for commerce students. Say on your profile which one you teach.
Not necessarily. Papers come in Tamil and English versions. If you teach Tamil-medium students, you need the Tamil terms; if not, say you teach the English version.
Those near suburban, MRTS or metro stations: Adyar and Mylapore on the MRTS, T Nagar and Kodambakkam on the suburban line, Anna Nagar and Vadapalani on the Green Line. Much of the OMR, Medavakkam and Porur depend on road travel.
Yes, some, often along the OMR and in central neighbourhoods. They ask for Maths AA or AI at SL or HL or IGCSE Core or Extended, and many accept online lessons from a specialist elsewhere.
In the Directorate's 2025-26 schedule, practicals came in February and theory papers from early March into April. Take each year's dates only from the Directorate's timetable page.
