IB and IGCSE tutor jobs in Chennai

Our Chennai zone guides give IB and IGCSE families along the OMR and ECR a frank piece of advice: if you need a specialist paper and cannot find a fitting home tutor nearby, consider an online tutor from elsewhere in India. That says a lot about this work. Higher Level specialists are rarely next door, families know it, and they are ready to mix home and online from the first conversation.

If you teach IB or IGCSE courses, you can join NXTutors free, list your programmes, subjects, levels and syllabus codes, choose home, online or both, and set your fee. This page explains Chennai's international-programme demand, the geography behind it and how to win the family's choice.

Who asks for ib and igcse tutors in Chennai

IB Diploma students ask for help with a named course, Maths AA or AI at SL or HL, or Chemistry HL, and often with an internal assessment or the Extended Essay, which a tutor may guide but must never write. The Diploma combines teacher-marked coursework, moderated by the IB, with final exams. MYP students are judged against published criteria, and PYP children, aged 3 to 12, learn through inquiry units on six transdisciplinary themes with an exhibition in the final year and no external exams.

IGCSE learners need command words, the correct tier and past papers marked against the official scheme. A Chennai tutor who keeps Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel papers apart, and checks which one the school follows, starts the demo on the right foot. For English, families should know whether the child is entered for First Language 0500 or Second Language 0510.

Children who move across from the State Board, with its public examination at the end of Class 10 and the higher secondary course after it, usually manage the content and find the format hard: open questions, command terms and written reasoning in every subject. We have no reliable count of IB students in Chennai and give none; what families tell us is that the right specialist matters more than the shortest trip.

Both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE appear in Chennai homes, so a tutor checks the board and syllabus code before the demo and keeps the two sets of past papers and mark schemes separate.

Where in Chennai the work is

The OMR & ECR belt is a big part of this work. Gated communities along the OMR often want a resident to approve each visitor, so being added once as a regular guest in the society app saves time at every lesson. Only Perungudi has a station and the Purple Line is still being built, so tutors travel by two-wheeler, bus or cab, and online sessions help on the busiest evenings.

Central neighbourhoods are easier to reach. Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore are on the MRTS, with Teynampet on the Blue Line for Alwarpet; Anna Nagar's numbered avenues have Green Line stations a short walk away; Nungambakkam is on the suburban line. A specialist living near any of these can visit in person in the afternoon and teach OMR students online in the evening.

Many IB and IGCSE families in Chennai settle on a weekly home session for new material or long problem-solving and a shorter online class for past-paper review. Offering both on your profile puts you in more of their shortlists.

What families in Chennai expect

  • Name programme, subject, level and code: IB DP Maths AA HL, Chemistry SL, MYP Sciences, IGCSE 0580 Extended, English 0500 or 0510.
  • Prepare from the current subject guide on ibo.org or syllabus on cambridgeinternational.org.
  • Mark past-paper answers strictly against the official scheme.
  • Guide IAs, the Extended Essay and MYP projects without writing them.
  • Keep Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel materials apart.
  • Help students arriving from the State Board adjust to open questions and command terms.
  • Offer hybrid or online weeks for OMR families.

How to get picked

Profiles that win this work read like a specialist's record: the courses and levels you have taught, the exam sessions you have prepared students for and one honest line on how you handle internal assessment. Add the area you live in, the rail line you use, and that you teach online for families along the OMR.

In the demo, mark one past-paper answer from the student's course against the scheme in front of the parent and show where each mark was won or lost. Then outline the next six weeks around the school's assessment calendar. Leads, credits and how you get paid are explained in the modules below.

Timing your availability helps. IB Diploma students have school deadlines for internal assessments and the Extended Essay through the two years, and IGCSE students sit exam series that their schools announce; families start looking for help when a deadline or mock is close. If you list weekend mornings and one or two weekday evenings online, an OMR family can fit you in without the drive. Mention any experience preparing students who joined from the State Board or CBSE, since that transition is a common worry.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

Is IB and IGCSE tutoring in Chennai mostly online?

Often hybrid. Along the OMR, families who cannot find a specialist nearby are advised to consider an online tutor, and many combine one home visit with online sessions.

Which IB subjects are requested?

Maths AA or AI at SL or HL, the sciences such as Chemistry HL, and help with IAs or the Extended Essay. List only what you have taught.

Can I write parts of an IA for a student?

No. You may guide the method and planning, but the student writes every part. Families respect a tutor who states this clearly.

How do I reach OMR gated communities?

By two-wheeler, bus or cab, since only Perungudi has a station. Ask to be added as a regular guest in the society app.

Do PYP families in Chennai hire tutors?

Some do, for number facts, reading and writing a clear paragraph. A PYP tutor supports inquiry rather than drilling for a test.

Do students switch from the State Board to IB or IGCSE?

Some do. They usually manage the content but need help with command terms, open questions and written reasoning.
