English tutor jobs in Chennai

The State Board +2 English paper opens with twenty one-mark questions and runs to passages and longer writing, 90 marks in all in the Directorate's sample set. It is a long paper for students who have spent the year on group subjects, and that is often when Chennai families look for an English tutor: when the language they thought was safe starts to cost marks.

Who asks for english tutors in Chennai

On the Tamil Nadu State Board, English is Part II of both the SSLC and the Higher Secondary, sitting between the Part I language and the group subjects. A State Board English tutor works straight from the prescribed textbook, keeps pace with the school's term tests and practises the board's question style with its past and sample papers. Families whose children attend "Matric" schools sit the same state papers. Some students also take Communicative English as a Part III subject in the Higher Secondary.

CBSE Class 10 English is 80 marks across reading 20, writing and grammar 20 and literature 40, with 20 internal; Class 12 English Core drops grammar. ICSE has two 80-mark, two-hour papers, language and literature, each with 20 internal marks, and rewards composition, summary and speed. ISC has two three-hour papers of 80 with 20 project marks each, and asks for a 400 to 450 word composition, proposals and attention to poetry style.

International students take Cambridge IGCSE First Language 0500, where the reading paper is 50% and the writing paper or coursework the other 50%, or Second Language 0510; knowing which entry the child has is the first step. IB Language A involves unseen analysis, a comparative essay, an individual oral and, at HL, an essay. Families moving to Chennai from other states or abroad often ask for English support while their child adjusts to a new board.

Where in Chennai the work is

English works well in a hybrid pattern, so you can keep home visits close. T Nagar, Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam is reachable by suburban train to Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Mambalam and Saidapet; in West Mambalam a landmark with the house number saves a search on the first visit. Anna Nagar's numbered avenues make homes quick to find, with Green Line stations close by.

Velachery, Guindy and Tambaram, served by the Blue Line, the MRTS and the GST Road suburban line, is a good base for a tutor who wants several homes in one evening. The OMR & ECR belt is mostly gated campuses where a resident approves each visitor and only Perungudi has a station; families there often take online essay feedback in the week and a home session at the weekend. In North Chennai's older lanes, parking is tight near the markets and newer buildings take your name at the gate.

Because English writing can be marked from a photograph or shared document, an online tutor anywhere in Chennai can support an ISC or IGCSE student along the OMR without the evening drive.

What families in Chennai expect

  • Name the papers you teach: State Board SSLC or +2 English, Communicative English, CBSE, ICSE, ISC, IGCSE 0500 or 0510, IB Language A.
  • Work from the prescribed textbooks and the board's own sample and past papers.
  • Teach timed writing to each board's length and format.
  • Mark written work against the board's criteria and return specific corrections.
  • For State Board +2, practise the run of one-mark questions as well as passages and long writing.
  • Support students moving into Chennai schools from other boards or states.
  • Keep a weekly slot and offer online feedback between visits.

How to get picked

Show your method rather than a list of degrees. On your profile, explain what a student gets back after writing: a mark against the board's criteria, specific corrections and a model sentence. Name the boards you teach and, for international students, the syllabus code. Mention the station or line you live near and that essay feedback can run online.

In the demo, give the student ten minutes to write on a prompt from their own syllabus and mark it in front of the parent. Explain what a full-mark answer would add. For a State Board +2 student, try five quick one-mark items too. Leads, credits and how you get paid are explained in the sections below.

Remember the board calendars. State Board schools follow the calendar the state announces, while the CBSE session starts in April, so English tutors in Chennai often run two revision seasons. A tutor who keeps term tests, practicals in other subjects and the public examination timetable in view can plan English hours where they help rather than where they clash.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

How long is the State Board +2 English paper?

In the Directorate's sample set it carries 90 marks, opening with twenty one-mark questions and moving on to passages and longer writing. Check the Directorate's site for the current pattern.

Do State Board families want spoken English?

Most requests are tied to the school paper. Some students take Communicative English as a Higher Secondary subject; list it only if you teach that syllabus.

Can I teach English online from Chennai?

Yes. Essay feedback, literature discussion and comprehension work well online, especially for families on the OMR. Young children usually benefit from home sessions.

What do IGCSE English students need?

First know whether the child has the First Language 0500 or Second Language 0510 entry. Then work on reading analysis and writing to the syllabus, using past papers marked against the scheme.

Which areas suit an English tutor without a vehicle?

Areas near the suburban line, MRTS and metro, such as T Nagar, Mambalam, Anna Nagar and Velachery. Most of the OMR depends on road travel.

Can I combine English with Tamil support?

Some families ask for help with the Part I language too. List Tamil only if you teach the school syllabus well.
