Science tutor jobs in Chennai

Science tuition in Chennai turns on two things a parent can see at a glance: the textbook figures and the February practical. State Board SSLC science rewards students who know the textbook's diagrams by heart and can draw them neatly, and the science practical, held in February before the theory papers, is treated seriously enough that private candidates must enrol for practical classes in advance. A science tutor who prepares both is easy to recommend.

Who asks for science tutors in Chennai

In the Directorate's Sample Question Paper V, SSLC Science is 75 marks in three hours: 12 one-mark multiple-choice questions, any seven 2-mark questions with one compulsory, any seven 4-mark questions with one compulsory, and three 7-mark questions, all answered, with diagrams where needed. The paper is printed in Tamil and English versions, so a Tamil-medium student answers with the terms from the Tamil textbook. Families on the State Board, including those whose school calls itself "Matric", want a tutor who teaches from the state books and the Directorate's sample papers.

CBSE families want NCERT-based teaching for the 80-mark Class 10 paper, with unit weights of Chemical Substances 25, World of Living 25, Effects of Current 13, Natural Phenomena 12 and Our Environment 5, and three topics marked only in school this year. ICSE families want exact definitions, labelled diagrams and long answers. The CBSE session starts in April while the State Board follows the calendar the state announces, so revision seasons differ between families on the same street.

Requests often begin in Classes 7 and 8, when physics, chemistry and biology begin to feel separate and diagrams start to carry marks. Up to Class 10, one tutor for all three strands is the usual pattern; after that, families look for specialists.

Where in Chennai the work is

After-school science lessons need a short journey, and Chennai's rail lines help. In Anna Nagar, Kilpauk and Aminjikarai, the grid of numbered avenues makes homes quick to find, and Green Line stations from Thirumangalam to Shenoy Nagar and Arumbakkam put most of the zone within a short walk; book slots before the early-evening rush near the 2nd Avenue shops. In Mogappair, Ambattur and Avadi, the suburban line towards Arakkonam, with stations at Pattaravakkam, Ambattur, Annanur and Avadi, is the backbone, and a train plus short auto is the steadiest way in.

Perambur, Kolathur and North Chennai is reachable without a car: suburban trains serve Perambur, Villivakkam and Tondiarpet, and the Blue Line reaches Washermanpet and Tondiarpet. Older lanes are narrow and parking is tight near the markets, so a door number with a landmark helps, and newer buildings take your name at the gate. Market roads in Perambur and Royapuram are crowded in the evening, so a slightly earlier slot usually works.

What families in Chennai expect

  • Teach from the book the child uses: the State Board textbook in Tamil or English, NCERT, or the ICSE school text.
  • Drill the textbook's figures so the student can draw and label them neatly from memory.
  • Prepare SSLC students for the February science practical as well as the theory paper.
  • Use the Directorate's sample papers to practise the compulsory question inside each section.
  • For CBSE, match answer length to marks and know which topics are school-assessed this year.
  • Cover all three strands to Class 10 and spot maths gaps in physics numericals.
  • Plan around the board's calendar, which differs between State Board and CBSE.

How to get picked

Your profile should show the parent you know which paper and which book. "State Board SSLC science, English version, diagrams and February practical" or "CBSE and ICSE science, Classes 6 to 10" tells them in one line. Add the station or line you live near, such as the suburban line at Ambattur or the Green Line at Anna Nagar, and the hours you can arrive after school.

At the demo, ask the student to draw and label one textbook diagram from memory, then answer a 4-mark question in writing. Show the parent where the answer lost marks and how your weekly routine would fix it. Explain how you will divide time between the practical and the theory paper before February. Leads, credits and how you get paid are explained below.

Seasons matter in Chennai too. Mylapore's old houses sit on narrow lanes near the temple tank, so festival days there are better handled with a morning or online lesson, and shopping weekends and festival seasons slow every route into T Nagar. A tutor who offers to move a session online on those days, rather than cancel, keeps a Class 10 student's revision on schedule.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

How is State Board SSLC science marked?

The Directorate's Sample Question Paper V sets 75 marks over three hours: one-mark questions, 2-mark and 4-mark sections with a compulsory question each, and three 7-mark answers with diagrams. Check the Directorate's site for the current pattern.

When is the SSLC science practical?

In the Directorate's 2025-26 schedule, practicals were held in February before theory papers. Take each year's dates from the Directorate's own timetable.

Do I need to teach in Tamil?

Only if you take Tamil-medium students, who need the Tamil textbook terms. Otherwise state that you teach the English version and CBSE or ICSE.

Which areas suit a science tutor using public transport?

Areas near suburban, MRTS and metro stations: Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Perambur, Mylapore, T Nagar and Velachery. Much of the OMR and Medavakkam depend on roads.

Do CBSE science families in Chennai want tutors too?

Yes. CBSE families are spread from Anna Nagar's avenues to the OMR's gated communities, and they want NCERT-based teaching tested against CBSE sample papers.

Can I teach science online from Chennai?

Yes, and it helps on the OMR, where many evenings are taken by office traffic. For younger children, keep at least one home session a week if you can.
