Now taking on home, online and hybrid tutors · in Chennai
Spelling tests in Tamil or Hindi that come home with the same mistakes week after week: that is one of the signs Chennai parents mention when they look for a primary tutor, alongside slow reading and finger-counting past Class 3. For a tutor who enjoys young children, it means the job is part reading teacher, part maths coach and sometimes part language helper.
No open primary (class 1–5) requests in Chennai right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.
NXTutors lets primary tutors join free, set their own fee and choose the streets and stations they can reach. You can teach at home, online or both, though most families of young children want you at the table. Below is what primary families in Chennai ask for, how the city's layouts make visiting easier and how to earn a parent's trust.
The patterns parents act on are steady ones, not one bad test: a Class 2 child still guessing words from the picture or reading aloud without being able to say what happened; addition and subtraction facts not yet automatic in Class 3; homework that takes an hour of argument to start; a second language slipping; or a move from another state, from abroad or between boards that has left gaps nobody has mapped. If the trouble is mainly attention or behaviour across every subject, the class teacher is the first conversation, not a tutor.
Board decides materials. State Board and "Matric" schools teach from the state's books; CBSE primary schools use the school's own choices; ICSE schools pick books for the early classes and tend to expect a lot in English; IB Primary Years Programme schools, for children from 3 to 12, work through inquiry units on six transdisciplinary themes and finish with the exhibition, with no external exams. A PYP tutor builds number facts, reading stamina and clear paragraphs rather than drilling.
Languages are a frequent request. A family new to Chennai may need help with Tamil, or with Hindi if the school teaches it as a second or third language, and parents usually say which language, class and textbook. If you teach one of these well at primary level, it widens the requests you fit.
Chennai's housing-board layouts with numbered streets, such as Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar, Ashok Nagar and KK Nagar, make homes easy to find, which suits a primary tutor planning two or three short visits in an afternoon. Anna Nagar's grid of numbered avenues has Green Line stations from Thirumangalam to Shenoy Nagar and Arumbakkam, and KK Nagar's numbered sectors are easy to navigate from Vadapalani or Ashok Nagar.
Older neighbourhoods need a little more planning. In Mylapore, old houses sit on narrow lanes near the temple tank and festival days are better handled with a morning or online lesson. In Perambur and North Chennai, a door number with a landmark helps, and newer buildings take your name at the gate. In Mogappair, tell families whether you come by bus, metro or two-wheeler, and avoid the Inner Ring Road rush.
The OMR is mostly gated communities where a resident approves each visitor; being added once as a regular guest in the society app saves time at every lesson. Since evenings there are often taken by office traffic, a tutor who lives in the same community or nearby has a clear advantage for primary work.
Primary parents in Chennai are inviting you into their home every week, so they look for calm, reliability and a clear routine. Describe your hour on your profile and list the streets or stations you can reach on foot or by a short ride. If you help with Tamil or Hindi spelling and reading, say so clearly; for families new to the city, that is often the deciding point.
At the demo, listen to the child read a page and retell it, try three sums of rising difficulty and look at the school diary. Tell the parent one strength and one gap in plain words, and suggest a four-week plan. Leads, credits and how you get paid are set out in the modules below.
About an hour is a common length for Classes 3 to 5: a few minutes on the diary and worksheets, most of the time on the skill, then the child starting homework alone, and a short reading or number game to finish. Class 1 children often do better with shorter, more frequent sessions.

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.
A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.
You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
Mostly home for Classes 1 to 3. By Classes 4 and 5, some reading discussion, mental maths or composition feedback can move online, especially for OMR families on busy evenings.
Some will, particularly families who have moved from another state. Only list it if you teach the school's Tamil syllabus well.
Secure number facts, longer reading, clear paragraphs and support with inquiry units. With no external exams, a PYP tutor is not drilling for a test.
Yes. List the zones you want; home requests are matched to them and the closest tutors are shortlisted first.
Suggest the parent speak to the class teacher first. A tutor helps with learning gaps, not every difficulty a child can have.
Ask the family to add you as a regular guest in the society app once lessons are settled, so a resident does not have to approve every visit.
