Home tuition jobs in Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore, Chennai

Chennai's old southern coast is a zone where a tutor can still ride a train most of the way to a student's door. The MRTS runs down the eastern side from Light House to Thiruvanmiyur, and the homes along it range from old houses on Mylapore's temple lanes to planned streets by the beach at Besant Nagar. If you live near that line, this page is about whether the zone deserves a place in your travel areas.

Mylapore's older houses stand on narrow lanes near the temple tank, with apartment buildings on the tree-lined avenues beyond. Alwarpet, between Teynampet and Abhiramapuram, is residential streets of flats in small and mid-sized buildings, with offices and cultural venues on the main roads. Adyar, formally incorporated into the city in 1948, is a cluster of named nagars where independent houses on leafy streets sit beside low-rise apartment blocks. Besant Nagar, developed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board from the early 1970s to the early 1980s, is a planned layout on numbered streets that mixes houses on the original plots with newer flats and some government quarters. Thiruvanmiyur adds houses and apartment blocks around its old temple core, and the East Coast Road begins there.

Getting to Adyar, Besant Nagar & Mylapore

The MRTS opened from Chennai Beach to Chepauk on 16 November 1995, reached Thirumayilai on 19 October 1997, and was extended to Thiruvanmiyur on 26 January 2004, adding Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasturba Nagar and Indira Nagar. In practice, Thirumayilai and Mandaveli serve Mylapore, Kasturba Nagar and Indira Nagar serve Adyar, and Thiruvanmiyur is the stop for Besant Nagar. Teynampet on the Metro Blue Line, open since 25 May 2018, is the closest working metro stop for Alwarpet.

Besant Nagar has no station of its own, but its large bus terminus runs many city routes, and a tutor coming by train usually finishes by auto. The Purple and Yellow metro lines through the zone are under construction, so for now the MRTS, the Blue Line at Teynampet and the buses are what you can rely on.

What families in Adyar, Besant Nagar & Mylapore ask for

Many children in Chennai study under the Tamil Nadu State Board, which holds the SSLC public examination in Class 10 and the Higher Secondary examination, usually called +2, at the end of Class 12. Its papers come in Tamil and English versions, so say on your profile which version you teach. Families here also follow CBSE, CISCE's ICSE and ISC, and IB or IGCSE; the zone research does not split them by locality, so a precise line about your own boards and classes is what counts.

When a family in Mylapore, Alwarpet, Adyar, Besant Nagar or Thiruvanmiyur sends a request, tutors who live in the zone are listed first, then tutors who already travel here, then tutors from across Chennai, then online tutors. Two or three are sent. A tutor who lives near an MRTS station further up the line can add the nagars around the stops they use, and so come before the citywide list.

Society entry and visitor norms

Most homes are houses or flats in small buildings. In Alwarpet's flats you give your name to the watchman and park on the street. Besant Nagar's numbered streets make houses easy to find, and parking a two-wheeler outside is usually simple. In Adyar, ask for the nagar and street, since the locality is a cluster of named nagars. Mylapore's lanes near the tank are narrow, so a landmark helps on the first visit.

Timings that work in Adyar, Besant Nagar & Mylapore

Traffic builds at the Adyar signal and where the ECR and OMR begin, so an early or late weekday slot usually works better than one in the evening peak. Temple festival days crowd Mylapore; on those days a morning lesson or an online session is easier for everyone. Besant Nagar's beach roads are crowded on weekend evenings, which makes a weekday lesson or a weekend morning the calmer choice there. If you take two students on the MRTS, one near Mandaveli and one near Indira Nagar, the train links them without the road.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

Which stations should I use for each locality?

Thirumayilai and Mandaveli for Mylapore, Kasturba Nagar and Indira Nagar for Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur for Besant Nagar, all on the MRTS, and Teynampet on the Blue Line for Alwarpet.

How do I reach Besant Nagar without a station?

Take an auto from the MRTS stations in Adyar or Thiruvanmiyur, or a bus to the Besant Nagar terminus. The numbered streets make the house quick to find.

Should I teach the Tamil or English version of state board papers?

Whichever you know well, and say so on your profile. State board papers come in both versions, so families look for a tutor who works with the one their child writes.

Does it cost anything to list these areas?

No. Joining is free and listing travel areas is free. You set your own fee, which families see before the free demo; the section below explains leads, credits and payment.

What about festival days in Mylapore?

The temple area gets crowded, so agree a morning slot or an online lesson for those days with the family in advance, rather than trying to reach the lanes in the evening.
