Commerce tutor jobs: accountancy, business studies and economics

A student who chose commerce in Class 11 often discovers within weeks that accountancy is nothing like the mathematics they expected. The journal will not balance, the ledger posting goes to the wrong side, and by the time the trial balance arrives the gaps have multiplied. Economics brings its own shock with graphs and definitions, and business studies asks for long, structured answers that many students have never had to write. That is when families look for a commerce tutor.

This page is for chartered and cost accountants, commerce and economics graduates, finance professionals and teachers who want to tutor senior commerce students through NXTutors. It covers what each subject asks of a tutor, how the boards differ, the parts of the syllabus where students most often fall behind, and how to show your skill in a demo. Joining is free. We cannot promise how many commerce requests you will see, students or income.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Decide which commerce subjects and boards you teach, and list each one separately.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Apply on WhatsApp; joining is free. Confirm with a one-time code at first login.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

Add class bands, fee, mode and travel areas, then upload your ID for the check.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

Unlock masked commerce leads that match, and propose a fee with up to three demo slots.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

In the free demo, rebuild a problem the student got wrong, line by line.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

Repair Class 11 foundations first, then move on to partnership and company accounts.

Accountancy: building it in the right order

Accountancy is the most sequential subject a commerce student meets. Class 11 lays the base: accounting principles, the accounting equation, journal entries, ledgers, the trial balance, bank reconciliation, depreciation and the preparation of financial statements. Class 12, on most boards, moves to partnership accounts with admission, retirement and dissolution, company accounts for shares and debentures, and the analysis of financial statements.

Each layer depends on the one before. A Class 12 student struggling with goodwill on admission of a partner is often really struggling with the rules of debit and credit from Class 11. Test those foundations in the first sessions and repair them before tackling the new chapter; it saves weeks later.

Presentation is part of the subject. Teach students to rule formats neatly, write narrations under journal entries, show working notes for every adjustment and carry totals correctly between statements. Examiners can only award marks they can follow, and a messy but correct answer often scores less than it should.

Business studies: writing answers that score

Business studies looks easy because it reads like common sense, and students lose marks precisely because they answer it that way. Board papers reward correct terms, the right number of points for the marks, and application to the situation in a case-based question. A student who knows the principles of management but cannot recognise which one a case describes will keep losing marks.

Teach a simple answer frame: identify the concept, state it in the textbook's words, explain it, and link it to the case. Then practise with past and sample questions and mark them strictly. Most improvement in business studies comes from this kind of marked practice rather than from more reading.

Economics: graphs, definitions and data

Economics in Classes 11 and 12 usually covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, Indian economic development and, in Class 11 on several boards, statistics for economics. Students need precise definitions, accurate diagrams with labelled axes and curves, and the ability to explain why a curve shifts rather than merely that it does.

Numerical parts, such as national income calculations, elasticity and measures of central tendency, trouble students who chose commerce to escape mathematics. Teach the method step by step with the textbook's examples, then vary the numbers. A tutor who can make a student comfortable with these questions removes a large source of lost marks.

Link the subject to the news where it helps. A student who has followed a change in interest rates or a budget announcement understands money supply or government budgets far faster, provided you bring them back to the textbook definitions before the lesson ends.

Boards and their commerce papers

On CBSE, the NCERT books in accountancy, business studies and economics are the base, and the board's sample papers on cbseacademic.nic.in show current question types. Under CISCE, ISC commerce students take accountancy, commerce, economics and often business studies, with their own syllabus and specimen papers on cisce.org. State boards set their own commerce syllabi at senior secondary, PUC or Intermediate level, with their own textbooks.

Some boards give accountancy students an option between the analysis of financial statements and computerised accounting, and some students take mathematics or applied mathematics alongside commerce. Ask the family exactly which papers and options the student is taking before you plan the year.

Commerce tuition and later goals

Many commerce families are already thinking ahead to a professional course or a commerce degree, and some students begin preparing for a professional foundation examination alongside Class 12. If you can genuinely help with that, say so on your profile, and check the syllabus and rules on the professional body's own official website rather than from memory.

Keep the board year first unless the family says otherwise. A strong board result in accountancy and economics supports almost any next step, and a student who rushes ahead to professional material while the Class 12 syllabus is unfinished risks both.

Your background and the demo

Families often look for a chartered accountant, a commerce postgraduate or an experienced commerce teacher, but NXTutors sets no minimum qualification; your profile must simply be true. Write exactly what you teach: 'Class 11–12 accountancy and business studies, CBSE and ISC' tells a parent far more than 'all commerce subjects'.

Requests reach you as masked leads showing the class, board, subject, the need in a line, the area, the timing and a budget band. The first class with a family you are matched with is a free demo. Take a problem the student got wrong, a partnership adjustment or a ledger that would not balance, and rebuild it with them line by line. You set your own fee and the family sees it before the demo; see how you get paid further down.

Joining as a commerce tutor

Joining is free. Apply on WhatsApp through the form on /become-a-tutor; the team replies and sets up your account. At first login you confirm with a one-time code, then add each commerce subject, class bands, boards, fee, mode and travel areas. Upload a government photo ID under Documents; tutors who join go through an ID check, and the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed it.

Commerce suits online teaching well, since most work is written and a shared screen or camera over the notebook shows every entry. Related pages: /class-11-12-tutor-jobs, /working-professional-tutor-jobs, /maths-tutor-jobs and /online-tutor-jobs.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

Women tutors are welcome on NXTutors, for home classes, online classes or both. You decide how, where and when you teach. These are the controls the product gives you, and the habits our safeguarding policy asks of tutors and families.

  • Choose home, online or hybrid teaching on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
  • List the areas you travel to: home requests come only from those areas.
  • Set your own days and timings; requests are matched to the hours you give.
  • Every match starts with a demo class, and our safeguarding policy asks the parent to be at home for it.
  • Teach where a parent or another adult is at home; in gated societies the family adds you to the gate or visitor register.
  • Keep messages with the parent or a family group, never a child's private chat.
  • Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. It confirms identity; it is not a police check.
  • Stop any time. If anything worries you, stop the classes and tell us on WhatsApp or through the contact page.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

Can I teach only accountancy, not economics or business studies?

Yes. List each commerce subject separately on your profile; requests reach you only for the subjects you list.

Do I need to be a chartered accountant to teach commerce?

No. NXTutors sets no minimum qualification. A professional qualification or commerce degree helps families trust you, but what decides is how well you teach in the free demo, and your profile must be true.

Which part of accountancy do students struggle with most?

Often the foundations of debit and credit from Class 11, which then make partnership and company accounts in Class 12 hard. Check those foundations early with every new student.

How should I prepare students for case-based business studies questions?

Teach them to identify the concept in the case, state it in the textbook's terms, explain it and link it back to the case, then practise with board sample questions and mark strictly.

Can I teach commerce online?

Yes. Commerce is largely written work and suits online lessons well. Set your mode to online or both, and use a shared screen or camera so you can see every entry.

Is there a cost to join as a commerce tutor?

No. Joining, onboarding and the Free plan cost nothing, and the Free plan includes monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional and never needed to apply for a tuition.
