State board tutor jobs: teaching in the student's own textbook and language
Most school students in India study under their state's board, not a national one. In Bengaluru that may mean SSLC and then Pre-University; in Hyderabad, SSC and Intermediate; in Chennai, SSLC and Higher Secondary; in Kolkata, Madhyamik and Higher Secondary; in Pune or Mumbai, SSC and HSC. Each board writes its own textbooks, sets its own papers and, in many states, shares its senior syllabus with a state entrance examination.

That makes state-board tuition a specialist skill. Families want a tutor who teaches from their child's own state textbook, understands how that board sets and marks papers, and often can explain in the language the child studies in. This page is for tutors who can offer that. Joining NXTutors is free. We cannot promise a number of state-board requests, students or income.

Which state boards and examinations
Names vary by state. Karnataka's school examination authority runs the SSLC at Class 10 and the II PUC examination at Class 12, with KCET for professional courses. Telangana's Board of Secondary Education runs the SSC, and its intermediate board runs the two-year Intermediate course, with TG EAPCET for engineering and related courses. Tamil Nadu's Directorate of Government Examinations conducts the SSLC and Higher Secondary examinations.
West Bengal's secondary board conducts Madhyamik and its higher secondary council the Higher Secondary examination, with WBJEE for engineering. Maharashtra's state board runs the SSC and HSC, with MHT-CET through the state CET cell. Gujarat's GSEB, Rajasthan's board and Uttar Pradesh's UPMSP run their own examinations too, with GUJCET in Gujarat. Always check any pattern or date on the board's or exam authority's own website.
Teach from the state textbook
The single most useful thing a state-board tutor can do is teach from the student's own textbook. State papers are set on those books, and their exercises, examples and terminology are what students are marked against. A tutor who teaches from a national-board reference book, however good, risks preparing the student for the wrong examination.
Use each board's model or previous question papers, published by the board itself where available, to understand question types and marks. Patterns differ widely: some boards favour short objective questions, others long descriptive answers, and the balance can change. Read the current material rather than relying on memory.
Medium of instruction
Many state-board students study in the regional language, others in English, and some switch medium between Classes 10 and 11. A student taught in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali or Marathi often needs a tutor who can explain in that language even when the technical terms are in English, and a student who has just moved to English medium needs patience with vocabulary as much as with the subject.
Say on your profile which languages you can teach in, and for which subjects. Families searching for a state-board tutor often care about language more than about any other qualification.
Senior years and state entrance examinations
In several states the senior secondary course leads straight into a state entrance examination for engineering, medicine or professional courses, and families look for tutors who can cover both. The overlap of syllabus helps, but board answers still need the board's presentation, and entrance papers need speed and accuracy under time pressure. Ask each family which carries more weight this year.
Some students in Classes 11 and 12 also prepare for national examinations, so a senior state-board student may be juggling the board, a state test and JEE or NEET. Be realistic about what you can cover and say so in your proposal.
State board students who move
Families relocate, and a student who moves from one state board to another, or from a state board to CBSE or ICSE, often needs a bridging tutor. Different textbooks may order chapters differently, so a student can arrive having missed a topic entirely or having done it twice. Compare the old and new syllabus in the first sessions and fill gaps before they show in a test.
Students moving in the other direction, from a national board into a state school, need help with the state textbook and, sometimes, with a regional language paper they have never studied. Both kinds of request suit tutors who know more than one board.
The demo and online teaching
Requests reach you as masked leads with the class, board, subject, a short need, the area, the timing and a budget band, never the family's name or number. The first class with a family you are matched with is a free demo. Bring the student's own state textbook, teach one section from it in the language the student prefers, and work one question from the board's model paper.
Online teaching lets a state-board tutor reach students of the same board across the whole state and in other cities where families from that state live. Online requests are matched on subject, class and board rather than distance. You set your own fee and the family sees it before the demo; the fee section below explains how you get paid.
What state-board families ask a tutor for
Requests often centre on the two examination years, Class 10 and the final senior year, but many families start earlier when a child falls behind in mathematics, science or English. In English-medium state schools, parents frequently want help with English itself; in regional-medium schools, they may want help with English as a subject and with the transition to English terms in science and mathematics.
Families also value a tutor who knows the school calendar of their state: when the academic year starts, when preparatory or pre-final examinations are usually held, and how much time remains for revision. Ask the school's own schedule rather than assuming it matches another board's, and plan the year around it.
Joining as a state board tutor

Women tutors welcome
For women tutors: you set the terms
Women tutors are welcome on NXTutors, for home classes, online classes or both. You decide how, where and when you teach. These are the controls the product gives you, and the habits our safeguarding policy asks of tutors and families.
- Choose home, online or hybrid teaching on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
- List the areas you travel to: home requests come only from those areas.
- Set your own days and timings; requests are matched to the hours you give.
- Every match starts with a demo class, and our safeguarding policy asks the parent to be at home for it.
- Teach where a parent or another adult is at home; in gated societies the family adds you to the gate or visitor register.
- Keep messages with the parent or a family group, never a child's private chat.
- Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. It confirms identity; it is not a police check.
- Stop any time. If anything worries you, stop the classes and tell us on WhatsApp or through the contact page.
Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.
Why tutors choose NXTutors
What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.
-
You set your fee
Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.
-
Matched, nearest first
Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.
-
Demo first
The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.
-
No made-up leads
We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.
-
An ID check for everyone
Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.
-
AI-first, with real teachers
Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.
Tutor plans and what each includes
Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.
Questions from tutors
Which state boards can I list on NXTutors?
List the board you actually teach, such as Karnataka SSLC and PUC, Telangana SSC and Intermediate, Tamil Nadu SSLC and Higher Secondary, West Bengal Madhyamik and Higher Secondary, or Maharashtra SSC and HSC.
Do I need to teach in the regional language?
Not always, but many state-board families value it. Say on your profile which languages you teach in, for which subjects, so the right requests reach you.
Should I use CBSE books for a state-board student?
No. Teach from the student's own state textbook and the board's own model papers. Extra practice from other books helps only once the state textbook is secure.
Can I prepare students for a state entrance test as well?
Yes, if you know it well. Several states link their senior syllabus to an entrance test such as KCET, TG EAPCET, MHT-CET or WBJEE. Check its pattern on the official site, and agree with the family how to balance it with the board.
Can I teach state-board students online?
Yes. Online requests are matched on subject, class and board, so you can teach students of your board anywhere they live.
Is there a fee to join as a state board tutor?
No. Joining, onboarding and the Free plan cost nothing, and the Free plan includes monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional and never needed to apply for a tuition.
