Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Plenty of Madurai children think in Tamil, chat in Tamil at home and are then examined in English. Some read well but lose marks on the format of a letter; some understand every lesson yet freeze when asked for a full paragraph; some need spoken English for interviews as much as for the board. Before we look for anyone, we ask four things: which board your child sits (Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE, ICSE or ISC, or an international course), which skill is weakest, which language your child is most at ease in, and where you live. Then we send two or three English tutors who fit, fees shown, and the first class with the one you pick is a free demo.
A Madurai child may be on the State Board, CBSE, or CISCE's ICSE and ISC, and occasionally on an international course such as IB or Cambridge IGCSE. The subject name never changes, but the paper behind it does.
| Board | Std X | Std XII | Working material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu State Board | Part II of the SSLC, after the Part I language | Part II of the Higher Secondary examination | The state English reader, plus official papers where the Directorate offers them |
| CBSE | English Language and Literature, 80 external and 20 school-based | English Core, 80 external; listening, speaking and a project make up 20 | NCERT readers and CBSE's own sample papers |
| CISCE | ICSE: separate language and literature papers of 80, each with internal marks | ISC: two 80-mark papers of three hours, each paired with project work | The school's set texts and CISCE specimen papers |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE First Language (0500) or Second Language (0510/0511) | IB Language A: analysis of an unseen text, a comparative essay, an oral | Past papers, plus the entry the school has chosen |
The Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu, conducts the SSLC and Higher Secondary examinations in March/June sessions. In its timetable, English is Part II at both levels, sitting between the Part I language and the Part III subjects; Communicative English also appears as a separate Part III subject in the Higher Secondary list. We keep our notes on the English papers general, since the Directorate sets and revises them: take formats and dates from dge.tn.gov.in.
For a State Board student, the tutor should work from the prescribed English textbook, use official model or earlier papers where the Directorate provides them, and explain in Tamil wherever that unlocks meaning, while keeping every written answer in English. Our Tamil Nadu Board tutor page for Madurai covers the board across subjects.
The 2026-27 curriculum divides the external paper into unequal blocks, and lesson time should follow those weights rather than the order in which school happens to teach chapters.
The biggest leak is usually literature: a student can retell a chapter fluently in Tamil yet write three thin lines in English. Marking a couple of full literature answers each week for relevance and length does more good than piling on grammar drills.
Whether a student has come from a Tamil-medium school or simply does their thinking in Tamil, the aim is the same: use Tamil as scaffolding early on and remove it step by step.
It can, and the two goals support each other: CBSE, ICSE and ISC each give marks for listening and speaking. Start with a short oral recap of the day's reading, then move to brief talks on a familiar topic and, later, mock interview questions. Families who want speaking confidence for interviews or college, not just for marks, should mention it at the start, since it decides which tutors make the shortlist. Our spoken English guide for students covers what helps.
In the primary years the target is fluent reading, not exam answers. Signs to act on: guessing at words from the first letter, losing the line, or avoiding books altogether. The cure is little and often. The child decodes unfamiliar words aloud, reads a page to a patient listener, and then tells the story back in their own words. If English is rarely spoken at home, look for a tutor who chats about pictures and simple stories in English and reaches for Tamil only to rescue a stuck moment. Ask specifically for someone used to teaching young children.
CBSE English Core gives Class 11 26 marks for reading, 23 for grammar and creative writing and 31 for literature from Hornbill and Snapshots; in Class 12 reading takes 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40. ISC English asks for a 400 to 450-word composition chosen from six topics, directed writing and a proposal, with literature as a separate paper. For IGCSE, confirm whether your child is entered for First Language or Second Language English; for the IB, expect unseen-text analysis and an individual oral. Specialists for these courses are fewer in Madurai, so an online tutor is often the practical answer. The national English home tutor guide treats every course in more depth.
Tutors here mostly get about by two-wheeler, city bus or auto, so someone living on your bank of the Vaigai tends to keep a weekly slot most reliably. Every locality is on our Madurai home tuition page.
| Locality | Setting | Share before the first lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Goripalayam | Homes tucked behind a junction where several main roads meet, central to both banks | Which lane to take and where to leave a two-wheeler |
| Vilangudi | A one-time panchayat town on the north-western edge, now inside the Corporation | For a flat, the floor and any visitor rule |
| Arappalayam | An old south-bank neighbourhood next to the inter-city bus terminus | The precise street, since homes lie away from the terminus |
| Anna Nagar | An eastern residential area linked to Mattuthavani and the rest of the city by bus | Street, building name and a landmark |
| K.K. Nagar | Older pockets and newer streets near the Mattuthavani terminus | The tutor's name, passed to the watchman or association |
| Anuppanadi | South-east of the centre, homes mixed with small workshops | The street and a fixed landmark near the door |
The East Madurai and West Madurai zone pages add landmarks and timing tips, and our Madurai home tuition guide compares all five zones.
Online English suits most children from around Std III, provided the tutor sees the written work first, through a photo of the notebook or a shared file. It is also how an ISC, IGCSE or IB specialist from another part of the city, or another city, can teach your child. Face-to-face lessons remain the stronger choice for beginning readers, for the early months of a shift away from Tamil-first study, and for shy speakers. Where the right tutor lives on the other bank, alternate a home visit with an online session each week.
If too many answers are no, let us know; another tutor from the shortlist gives a demo, and switching later is free. More pointers are in the demo class checklist for parents.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor names their own fee, shaped by the class and board, their experience with that paper, the trip at your chosen hour and the number of lessons a week. You see it on the shortlist ahead of the demo; our Madurai home tuition fees article has more.
Tell us the class, the board, the skill you are worried about, the language your child is most comfortable in, your locality with a landmark, the days that work and a rough budget. Two or three suitable tutors come back with their fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID, as explained on how we check tutors. For other subjects, see our maths and science tutor pages for Madurai, or book a free demo class. English teachers living in the city can see open requests on Madurai tuition jobs.

A Madurai family should send the class, board, the English skill that worries them, the child's easiest language, locality with a landmark, days and budget. We reply with two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.
For Madurai State Board students, English is Part II in both the SSLC and Higher Secondary timetables, after the Part I language and before the Part III subjects. Communicative English also appears as a separate Part III Higher Secondary subject. The Directorate sets and revises the papers, so check formats on dge.tn.gov.in.
A Madurai tutor should work most on literature, which carries 40 of the 80 marks in CBSE Class 10 English for 2026-27. Reading carries 20, grammar 10, and writing 10 through a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. Mark two full literature answers weekly for relevance and length.
A tutor helps a Madurai child who thinks in Tamil by using Tamil as scaffolding first, then removing it step by step. Methods include two-way translation, a daily English reading log, a bank of sentence starters, and an agreed date, often the end of the first term, after which lessons run wholly in English.
Yes, one Madurai English tutor can build speaking and board marks together, because CBSE, ICSE and ISC all give marks for listening and speaking. Lessons move from oral recaps of the day's reading to short talks and later mock interview questions. Mention interview or college goals early, as that changes the shortlist.
A Std I to V reader in Madurai needs an English tutor who builds fluent reading rather than exam answers, little and often. The child decodes new words aloud, reads a page to a listener and retells the story. If English is rarely spoken at home, ask for a tutor used to young children.
For Madurai students, CBSE English Core gives Class 11 reading 26 marks, grammar and creative writing 23, and literature 31. In Class 12 reading takes 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40, with listening, speaking and a project adding 20 internal marks. ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists are fewer, so online often helps.
A Madurai family in Arappalayam should share the precise street, since homes lie away from the inter-city bus terminus. In Goripalayam, where several main roads meet, say which lane to take and where to leave a two-wheeler. A tutor living on your bank of the Vaigai keeps a weekly slot most reliably.
A Madurai child can usually take English lessons online from about Std III, provided written work reaches the tutor first as notebook photos or a shared file. Home lessons stay stronger for beginning readers, shy speakers and the first months away from Tamil-first study; alternate visits and online sessions when the tutor lives across the river.
