Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Madurai families study on the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE and CISCE, and a CBSE child can end up with help that does not quite fit: a tutor who knows the content well but teaches from the state books and drills the state paper's format. CBSE tuition in Madurai works when the tutor treats the NCERT text as the centre of everything and practises the kinds of questions CBSE now sets. This page explains how CBSE differs from the State Board, what each class from 6 to 12 asks for, the 2026-27 changes in Classes 9 and 10, how board work sits beside JEE or NEET preparation, how tutors reach six localities on the south and west side of the city, and what to ask in the free demo. It is written by Abhinandan Tiwary, who teaches Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths, and Aaditya Kashyap, who teaches CBSE and ICSE science.
The State Board's Class 10 (SSLC) and Class 12 examinations are conducted by the Directorate of Government Examinations, built on the state's own textbooks, and printed in a Tamil and English version. CBSE builds every paper on the NCERT books and publishes sample papers and marking schemes on cbseacademic.nic.in each year. The topics overlap a great deal; the way they are asked does not. A tutor whose recent students were mostly State Board will know the mathematics and science, but should show they have worked with CBSE's competency questions and its step marking.
| Point | Tamil Nadu State Board | CBSE |
|---|---|---|
| Main book | The state's own textbooks | NCERT, with NCERT exemplar for harder practice |
| Class 10 exam | The SSLC, conducted by the Directorate; papers printed in a Tamil and English version | The CBSE Class 10 board, with a second exam to improve up to three subjects |
| Question style | Set by the Directorate; past papers are in its question bank | About half of secondary papers are competency-based: cases, sources, data |
| Where to find practice | dge.tn.gov.in and its notification portal | Sample papers and marking schemes on cbseacademic.nic.in |
Language deserves a word. If your child speaks Tamil at home and studies in English at school, a tutor may explain a hard idea in Tamil, but the written answer should be practised in clear English every week.
| Stage | Who sets the year-end paper | Where children slip | What the tutor works on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classes 6, 7 and 8 | Your child's school | Operations with fractions and signed numbers; careless reading of word problems | Gaps closed early, and every line of working written down |
| Class 9 | The school, on an 80-mark written paper with 20 internal marks | Algebra, geometry and three sciences all step up together | Short tests chapter by chapter, and an honest view on the Advanced paper |
| Class 10 | CBSE, with 20 of the 100 marks assessed by the school | Questions that place a familiar idea in an unfamiliar setting | Official sample papers, marked to the published scheme |
| Class 11 | Your child's school | The sudden depth of senior physics, chemistry and mathematics | Foundations that will carry the board year |
| Class 12 | CBSE, with a practical or internal component | Revising two years of content while sitting entrance mocks | A single revision calendar for board and entrance |
The pass mark at Class 10 is 33% in each subject. When a Class 9 student's marks fall without warning, the cause is usually an older gap, often in fractions or the first algebra chapters, so a tutor at this stage is worth more mending those than pushing ahead of the school timetable.
In Class 9, mathematics and science are each examined through one common 80-mark paper taken by every student. A student can choose to add an Advanced paper in mathematics, in science, in both or in neither. Each Advanced paper carries 25 marks, lasts one hour and holds only higher-order questions on additional content; its marks are kept apart from the aggregate, though a result of 50% or above appears on the marksheet. The older Basic and Standard choice in mathematics is ending, and the Class 10 students of 2026-27 are the final group to complete it. Our advice: take Advanced in a subject your child already enjoys, not as a stretch target.
In Class 10 there are now two board examinations. All students sit the first one. Those who pass can return for the second to try to raise their marks in a maximum of three subjects drawn from science, mathematics, social science and the languages. Plan as though the first is the only chance; the second is a cushion for one disappointing paper. Since roughly half of every secondary paper now tests competency, through case studies, source passages, data and applications, a tutor must go beyond the end-of-chapter exercises.
| Subject (code) | Written theory | Practical or internal |
|---|---|---|
| Physics (042), Chemistry (043), Biology (044) | 70 | 30, practical |
| Mathematics (041) or Applied Mathematics (241); a student takes one | 80 | 20, internal |
| Accountancy (055), Economics (030), Business Studies (054) | 80 | 20, internal |
The Class 12 board examines the full Class 12 syllabus, and CBSE has signalled that senior papers will tilt further towards applying ideas to real situations. The design for each year arrives with that year's sample paper, which is why a tutor still using an old one is a warning sign. For the board year, see our guides to Class 12 physics, organic and inorganic chemistry and calculus and algebra.
Students sometimes change board after Class 10, in either direction. The content carries over better than parents fear; the habits do not. A student coming from the SSLC to CBSE Class 11 needs the NCERT books read closely, because CBSE questions often turn on a precise line or diagram from them, and needs practice at competency-style questions that the state paper did not emphasise. A student going the other way needs the state textbooks' chapter order and worked examples, and the Directorate's past papers from its question bank. In both cases, the summer after Class 10 is the right time for a short bridging plan: the first chapters of the new course, the new paper's style, and a few written answers marked by the new board's standards.
A CBSE student has one real advantage here: the NCERT books sit underneath both the board paper and the entrance syllabus, so time spent on them is never wasted. The cost shows up late in Class 12, when months of quick multiple-choice practice leave board answers thin. The board tutor's job is to stop that slide. In practice, that means noting every NCERT chapter the entrance preparation skimmed and returning to it for written questions, asking for one complete board-style answer in each session, and checking the practical record and internal assessments that entrance work never touches. The entrance side is covered on JEE home tutors in Madurai and NEET home tutors in Madurai.
In Classes 9 and 10, a pair of weekday sessions tends to beat a single long one at the weekend, because each can have a clear purpose. Use one to mend whatever the latest school test exposed: go back to how NCERT explains the idea, then climb through exemplar problems to a competency-style question built on it. Use the other to write. Your child produces two or three board-style answers without help, and the tutor marks them as an examiner would, looking at each step, the units, the labels on every diagram and how the page is laid out. Once a month, ask for a brief written summary: chapters covered, recent test marks and the mistakes that keep reappearing. Our Class 10 maths preparation plan and Class 10 science notes follow the NCERT chapters.
A tutor at home makes most sense for younger children and for subjects where the working matters: mathematics, numerical physics, balancing chemical equations, accountancy formats. A screen serves well for a quick doubt session, for a senior subject whose ideal tutor lives on the other bank of the Vaigai, and for evenings when the journey is unreasonable. Our home versus online comparison sets out the trade-offs.
Every locality is on the Madurai home tutors page, and our Madurai home tuition guide covers timing zone by zone.
For the years up to Class 10, start with our maths home tutors in Madurai and science tutors in Madurai pages, and the national pages for Class 10 maths and Class 12 maths go deeper on the board years. Senior science students can go to the Madurai physics, chemistry and biology pages, and anyone whose written answers are too short can start with English tutors in Madurai. The board itself is explained at length on our CBSE board hub; for the state syllabus, see Tamil Nadu State Board tutors in Madurai.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Within that, a Madurai CBSE fee moves with your child's class, how many subjects you need, how often the tutor comes and how far they travel. The pricing guide and our post on home tuition fees in Madurai explain the factors.
To begin, send us the class, the subjects, your locality and a nearby landmark, the language your child is most at ease in, and the times you can keep free; then book a free demo. You can look through tutor profiles at any point. Teachers of CBSE subjects can find requests on Madurai tuition jobs.

For content, often yes, because the topics overlap. But CBSE builds papers on NCERT, sets about half of each secondary paper as competency-based questions, and marks steps against its own scheme. At the demo, ask which CBSE sample paper the tutor uses and watch whether they teach how to read a case-based question.
From 2026-27, every Class 9 student takes common 80-mark maths and science papers and may add an Advanced paper of 25 marks and one hour in either or both. It has only higher-order questions; its marks stay outside the aggregate, and a score of 50% or more is noted on the marksheet.
Yes. The first board exam is compulsory for every student. A student who passes may sit the second to improve marks in up to three subjects from science, mathematics, social science and the languages. Prepare for the first as the main exam and keep the second as a safety net for one weak subject.
Use the summer after Class 10 for a bridging plan. The tutor should take your child through the NCERT books closely, since CBSE questions often depend on exact lines and diagrams, introduce competency-style questions, and mark a few written answers against the CBSE scheme before school begins.
Many can, and a hard idea is sometimes easier to grasp in Tamil. The written board answer, though, must be practised in the language of the paper, usually English, with every step shown. Mention your child's preference in the request, and check at the demo that answers are actually written out.
