Cambridge IGCSE Physics, syllabus 0625, rewards something many students coming from CBSE classrooms are not used to: precise wording. A loose explanation that would pass in a school test often scores nothing on a Cambridge mark scheme. Add a multiple-choice paper, a choice of tier, and a practical component that some schools assess through a written alternative, and there is plenty for a tutor to organise. This page sets out what the syllabus for 2026 to 2028 asks, how a tutor can cover the practical skills even without a home lab, and how physics tutors reach different parts of Noida. It sits under our physics home tutors in Noida page and the IGCSE tutors in Noida hub.
Each candidate sits a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical paper. The tier decides which of the first two they take; the school decides which practical paper.
| Component | Core | Extended | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice: 40 questions in 45 minutes | Paper 1 | Paper 2 | 30% |
| Theory: 80 marks in 1 h 15 min, short and structured questions | Paper 3 | Paper 4 | 50% |
| Practical, 40 marks | Paper 5, Practical Test (1 h 15 min), or Paper 6, Alternative to Practical (1 h) | 20% | |
Calculators can be used in every component. Cambridge weights the assessment objectives at roughly half for knowledge with understanding, three tenths for handling information and solving problems, and a fifth for experimental skills. In other words, half the marks need more than recall. The current version of the syllabus states that there are no significant changes affecting teaching, so recent past papers remain good practice.
Core papers lead to grades C to G; Extended papers to A* to G. Cambridge's guidance is that candidates expected to reach grade C or above should be entered for Extended. The Extended tier adds Supplement content within each topic, marked clearly in the syllabus, and harder problem-solving. A tutor can help the decision by working through Supplement material with the student in Grade 9 and reporting how they manage it. If a student will sit Extended, the tutor should keep a list of Supplement points and tick them off as each is taught.
| Topic | Typical difficulty |
|---|---|
| Motion, forces and energy | Reading speed-time and distance-time graphs; moments; telling mass from weight |
| Thermal physics | Explaining with particles; specific heat capacity calculations; heat versus temperature |
| Waves | Accurate ray diagrams; refraction and total internal reflection; wave equation units |
| Electricity and magnetism | Series and parallel circuits; electromagnetic induction; transformers |
| Nuclear physics | Decay equations; half-life from a graph or table |
| Space physics | Orbits and the Sun's life cycle described in correct terms |
The school decides whether its candidates sit Paper 5, a hands-on practical test, or Paper 6, a written Alternative to Practical. The two test the same skills and contexts: planning an experiment, taking and recording readings, drawing graphs, spotting sources of error and suggesting improvements. Ask the school which one your child will sit.
A tutor does not need laboratory equipment to cover most of this. Simple measurements at a dining table, such as timing a pendulum, measuring a spring's stretch with household weights or recording a cooling cup of water, teach recording, tables and graphs perfectly well. Past Paper 6 questions cover the rest. What matters is that the student draws every graph by hand, with labelled axes, units and a sensible scale, because those marks are the easiest to lose.
The syllabus tells students to "recall and use" a set of equations, which means they must know them without a formula sheet. A tutor should keep a running list and test it weekly. Wording matters as much: "define", "state", "describe", "explain" and "suggest" each ask for something specific, and the syllabus publishes the meaning of each command word. Six habits protect marks:
The gap between a loose answer and a creditworthy one is often a single idea left unstated. Three illustrations of the kind a tutor should rehearse:
| Question type | Loose answer | Precise answer |
|---|---|---|
| Why does a metal rail feel colder than a wooden bench on the same evening? | "Metal is colder." | Both are at the same temperature; metal is a better thermal conductor, so it carries thermal energy away from the hand faster. |
| What happens to an astronaut's mass and weight on the Moon? | "They become lighter." | Mass is unchanged; weight falls because the gravitational field strength is smaller. |
| Why does a gas exert pressure on its container? | "The particles push the walls." | Particles collide with the walls; each collision exerts a force, and the total force per unit area is the pressure. |
A tutor who asks the student to correct the loose version, rather than simply supplying the precise one, builds the habit far faster.
Forty questions in forty-five minutes leaves just over a minute each. Students who score well here usually eliminate wrong options before choosing, sketch a quick diagram for any circuit or ray question, and move on rather than sinking time into one item. Topic-sorted multiple-choice sets, done under a timer, are a good use of the last ten minutes of a session.
| Period | Focus | Sessions a week |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 9, first term | Motion, forces and energy; equation list and glossary started | One |
| Rest of Grade 9 | Thermal physics and waves; first practical-paper questions | One |
| Grade 10, first half | Electricity and magnetism, nuclear and space physics; Supplement points checked | One or two |
| Final months | Timed papers in the right tier, a practical paper each week, weak topics repaired | Two |
Cambridge runs June and November series, and a March series is available to schools in India. A student sitting in March needs the final stretch to start earlier.
Many Grade 9 IGCSE students in Noida arrive from CBSE, the city's most common board, where physics sits inside a general science course. The content overlaps, but the expectation of precise written answers is new. After Grade 10, students continuing to the IB Diploma will meet the same topics with heavier algebra and data analysis; see the IB physics tutor in Noida page. Those moving to CBSE or ISC Class 11 should check the Class 11 syllabus for topics IGCSE does not cover. The IB and IGCSE tutoring guide for parents sets out the international track more broadly.
The Sector 62 belt and Near Noida Extension zones have their own notes; see every locality on the Noida home tutors page.
The tabletop practical work above is easier in person, and Grade 9 students often benefit from a tutor who can see them draw a ray diagram. For Grade 10 past-paper work, online sessions with a shared whiteboard work well, and they open the choice to Cambridge specialists beyond your sector. Where evening roads are heavy, a mix is common. Our guide to home and online tutoring has more.
The demo class checklist adds general questions.

IGCSE physics tutors in Noida set their own fees, which you see on the shortlist before the free demo. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The tier, time left before the series and travel at your slot move the figure.
A Noida candidate for Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 sits three papers: multiple choice, theory and practical. Multiple choice is 40 questions in 45 minutes worth 30%, theory is 80 marks in 1 hour 15 minutes worth 50%, and the 40-mark practical, Paper 5 or Paper 6, is worth 20%. Calculators are allowed in every component.
For Noida IGCSE physics students, Paper 5 is a hands-on practical test of 1 hour 15 minutes, while Paper 6 is a written Alternative to Practical of one hour. The school chooses which its candidates sit. Both test planning, measuring, recording, graphing, spotting errors and suggesting improvements, so preparation overlaps heavily.
A Noida student expected to reach grade C or above should take Extended IGCSE physics, as Cambridge advises; Extended opens A* to G, Core C to G. Extended adds Supplement content and harder problems. A tutor can cover some Supplement material in Grade 9 and report honestly how your child copes before the school decides.
Yes, a Noida tutor can teach most IGCSE physics practical skills without a lab, using simple measurements at a dining table. Timing a pendulum or recording a cooling cup of water teaches tables, graphs and error analysis, and past Alternative to Practical questions cover the rest. Every graph should be drawn by hand with labels, units and a sensible scale.
Noida students lose IGCSE physics explanation marks because Cambridge mark schemes reward precise wording, not just the right idea. Confusing mass with weight or heat with temperature, or describing instead of explaining, costs marks. A weekly glossary test, answers that use "because" and link to particles, forces or energy, and practice with the published command words fix most of it.
IGCSE physics tuition in Noida suits home sessions in Grade 9, when tabletop practical work and ray diagrams are easier in person. For Grade 10 past-paper work, online sessions with a shared whiteboard work well and open the choice to Cambridge specialists beyond your sector. Where evening roads are heavy, a mix of home and online is common.
A Noida IGCSE physics student must learn the "recall and use" equations listed in the 0625 syllabus, because no formula sheet is given for them. A tutor should keep a running list and test it weekly. Writing equation, substitution with SI units, then answer, as three lines, lets method marks survive a slip.
A Noida student should handle the IGCSE physics multiple-choice paper by eliminating wrong options and moving on, since 40 questions in 45 minutes leaves just over a minute each. A quick sketch helps for any circuit or ray question. Topic-sorted multiple-choice sets under a timer are a good use of the last ten minutes of a session.
