Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

In most Kolhapur homes, English is the language of the school bag, not the kitchen. Marathi fills the house, Hindi is common outside, and English turns up in textbooks, the board exam and, later, job interviews. Plenty of children understand far more than they can write. Ask them for a paragraph of their own and the pen stops. So the real work of an English tutor here is patient: a written voice first, a spoken one soon after, and exam technique added last. Tell NXTutors which board, which skill concerns you and which languages your child speaks. A shortlist of two or three English tutors comes back with fees, and the opening lesson is a free demo.
Kolhapur children sit English under the Maharashtra State Board, CBSE, CISCE (ICSE up to Class 10, ISC after it) and, in fewer cases, Cambridge or the IB. The subject name never changes; what earns the marks does.
| Board | Tenth year | Twelfth year | Practice material |
|---|---|---|---|
| State Board (MSBSHSE) | An SSC English paper built on the board's own textbook | An HSC English paper, normally studied at junior college | Board textbooks; sample question papers from the board's website |
| CBSE | English Language and Literature, written out of 80, with a further 20 assessed in school | English Core, whose school-assessed part covers listening, speaking and a project | The year's two NCERT readers; CBSE's published sample papers |
| CISCE | ICSE has separate language and literature papers worth 80 apiece; listening and speaking are marked internally | ISC keeps the same split into two papers | Set texts; the council's specimen papers |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE English, entered as 0500 (first language) or 0510/0511 (second language) | IB Language A, which combines unseen-text analysis, a comparative essay and an oral | Past papers for the exact entry the school has made |
English is examined in both the SSC, taken after Standard X, and the HSC, taken after Standard XII, by the Maharashtra State Board. Its schools may teach in Marathi or in English, so one Kolhapur classroom can hold a pupil for whom this is the only English paper of the year. The board's English mark scheme is not copied onto this page. Ask the tutor to use the State Board textbook along with the scheme and sample papers on mahahsscboard.in.
Across both mediums, a few habits win most marks. Comprehension answers should point to the sentence that proves them. Letters and reports need a format learned once, then new content every week. Literature answers need a short plan of points before the first full sentence. The rest of the board's subjects are on our Maharashtra Board home tutor in Kolhapur page.
The two NCERT books for CBSE Class 10 are First Flight and Footprints Without Feet. Here is how the 2026-27 written paper divides its 80 marks, largest share first:
The school-assessed 20 include 5 marks for listening and speaking.
A move from Marathi-medium to English-medium schooling, often at the start of a new stage, means new chapters and a new language arrive together. The aim is to begin bilingual and end in English:
Some children lean on Hindi more than Marathi. Mention it, so the tutor uses whichever one helps in the early weeks.
Before Class 6, success looks like a child who reads smoothly, writes neatly and asks for another story. Exam skills are for later. Signs that help is needed: guessing a word from its first letter, losing the line, or pushing books away. Little and often is the rule. A lesson might mix sounding out with phonics, a page read aloud with kind corrections, and a retelling in the child's words. If English is rare at home, the tutor can describe pictures together in simple English and use Marathi only when the child is truly stuck. In the demo, ask about the tutor's phonics method and the reading expected between visits.
These are the years when weak spots surface: the same grammar slips again and again, answers that stay one line long, or slow reading that drags out homework in every subject. A tutor who starts now has time to build habits before Classes 9 and 10 get heavy. ICSE parents should confirm the tutor has taught ICSE language and literature, which differ from State Board style, while State Board families should expect the tutor to follow the board's books chapter by chapter rather than a guide book.
In CBSE Class 11, English Core splits into reading (26), grammar with creative writing (23) and literature (31), using Hornbill and Snapshots; in Class 12 the readers are Flamingo and Vistas. ISC sets a language paper, with a 400 to 450 word composition picked from six titles, directed writing and a proposal, and a separate literature paper. For IGCSE, the first question is whether the entry is first-language or second-language English. IB Language A involves unseen analysis and an individual oral. State Board HSC students should keep to the board's current scheme. Requests from the old peths, for example Shaniwar Peth, often come from HSC arts and commerce students who want help with English writing. ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists are scarce in Kolhapur, so many of those families study online. See the national English home tutor page for course detail.
It can, and the written work improves with it. CBSE and CISCE both give marks for listening and speaking. One easy pattern: the last part of every lesson is spoken, starting with a retelling of the day's passage and later growing into two-minute talks and question-and-answer rounds. Where the real aim is fluent conversation for an interview or presentation, put that in the request, as it calls for a different type of tutor.
Weekly lessons last longer when the tutor lives nearby. Notes for six localities follow, and the Kolhapur page lists tutors everywhere else.
Zone pages for the Old City Peths, Shahupuri and Rajarampuri and Tarabai Park and Kasaba Bawada add detail, and the Kolhapur home tuition guide covers the whole city.
Once a child is around eight, English travels well over video, provided the tutor gets the written work before the lesson through a photo or a shared file. Going online is also how most families reach an ISC, IGCSE or IB specialist. Keep a tutor in the room for children just learning to read, for anyone adjusting to a new medium, and when speaking is the focus. The online tuition in Kolhapur page explains how lessons are set up.
Five questions to ask yourself afterwards: Did the tutor look at a marked school answer before starting? Did my child follow comfortably, with more English used as the hour went on? Did my child produce something, a written paragraph or a spoken answer, instead of only listening? Could the tutor describe the layout of our board's paper? Is there a homework task and a plan for the coming weeks? If the answers disappoint, tell us; another shortlisted tutor gives a demo, and a later switch also costs nothing.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Rates are each tutor's own. Useful to ask: have you taught our board's English paper, will you mark writing my child sends between lessons, and how often should we meet? You see the fees before the demo, and our Kolhapur home tuition fees guide suggests other questions.
Tell us the class and board, the biggest worry (reading, writing, grammar, literature or speaking), the language of the home and of the school, your locality and a landmark, and the slots that suit you. Two or three English tutors are suggested, each with a fee. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete (how the ID check works).
Kolhapur pages for other subjects include maths and science. Families elsewhere in Maharashtra can look at Pune's English tutors or the Mumbai hub. If you teach English in Kolhapur, families' open requests are on Kolhapur tuition jobs.

Kolhapur English tutors set their own rates, and you see each fee on the shortlist before the demo, so there are no surprises later.
Tell NXTutors the class and board, the main worry such as reading, writing or speaking, the languages used at home and school, your locality and your free times. We suggest two or three English tutors with their fees. The first lesson is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.
Literature carries 40 of the 80 written marks in 2026-27, reading 20, grammar 10 and writing 10. Writing means a formal letter for 5 and an analytical paragraph on a chart, graph or map for 5. The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking, so literature practice pays most.
A Kolhapur State Board student should practise from the board's own textbook and the sample papers on mahahsscboard.in. Comprehension answers should point to a line in the passage, writing tasks need a fixed format with fresh content each week, and literature answers should be planned in points before writing.
A tutor can start in Marathi and English together, then move fully into English by an agreed date. Short translations both ways show where tenses slip, a daily reading log builds vocabulary, and a stock of opening phrases makes letters and paragraphs easier. Many families pick the end of the first term to switch.
Many Kolhapur parents start English tuition in Classes 6 to 8, when grammar slips and short answers begin to show. Primary children can benefit earlier if reading is slow or they avoid books. Starting before Class 9 gives a tutor time to build habits before the board years.
Yes, an English tutor can build spoken confidence alongside board work, since CBSE and CISCE both assess listening and speaking. A lesson can end with the child retelling a passage aloud, growing into short talks. If interview or presentation fluency is the main goal, mention it, because a different tutor may suit.
ISC English asks Class 12 students to sit two papers, one for language and one for literature. The language paper includes a 400 to 450 word composition chosen from six topics, directed writing and a proposal. ISC specialists are few in Kolhapur, so many families combine a local tutor with online lessons.
Families should look for a patient tutor who teaches phonics, reads aloud with the child and checks homework. In Uttareshwar Peth, short afternoon visits work well when a grandparent is home. In Nagala Park, ask whether the tutor is comfortable with both Marathi-medium and English-medium books before the demo.
Online English tuition suits most Kolhapur students from about Class 3, as long as the tutor sees written work before each lesson. It also reaches ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists who may not live nearby. Early readers, children changing medium and speaking practice usually do better with a tutor in the room.
