Kolhapur Home Tuition Guide: Old City Peths, Shahupuri, Rajarampuri, Tarabai Park, Rankala and Kalamba
Kolhapur's homes fall into five groups that most residents would recognise. The old peths around Mahadwar Chowk form the historic core; Shahupuri, Rajarampuri, Laxmipuri and Sykes Extension make up the busy centre near the railway terminus; Tarabai Park and Kasaba Bawada run across the north from the New Palace; the Rankala side reaches west along the Radhanagari Road; and Kalamba and Jarag Nagar cover the south. Below, all twenty localities, one at a time.
Reference points a tutor in Kolhapur will know
Most tutors ride a two-wheeler, so a known reference point helps more than a long address. The railway terminus sits at the end of the Miraj to Kolhapur line, in the centre of the city. The city has three state transport bus stands: the Central Bus Stand on NH166 beside Shahupuri, and the Rankala Bus Stand on NH166G on the western side of the old city are the two most tutors use. Rankala Lake, Kalamba Lake and the New Palace complete the list.
| Zone | Reference point to mention | Typical homes | What slows a first visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old City Peths | Mahadwar Chowk, New Mahadwar Road, Rankala Bus Stand | Older houses on narrow gallis, small shops between them | Lanes that look alike; finding where to leave a two-wheeler |
| Shahupuri and Rajarampuri | The railway terminus, the Central Bus Stand, Bindu Chowk, Dasara Chowk | Flats above shops, houses and buildings on numbered lanes | Busy main roads in the evening; building gates |
| Tarabai Park and Kasaba Bawada | The New Palace | Apartment buildings, family houses, an old village core | Gallis in Kasaba Bawada that a street name alone will not find |
| Rankala and Radhanagari Road | Rankala Lake, the Radhanagari Road, the NH166G turning | Independent houses on regular lanes | The longer ride back from the western edge after dark |
| Kalamba and Jarag Nagar | Kalamba Lake, Jarag Nagar Main Road, Morewadi Road | Houses on residential plots, row houses, some flats | Telling the old village part from the newer layouts |
Old City Peths
The four old peths sit side by side around Mahadwar Chowk, and many addresses are given by galli and chowk rather than by building. Because the peths touch one another, a tutor living in one can often teach in another on the same afternoon.
Shivaji Peth: stretches from New Mahadwar Road towards Rankala Lake, with homes close together on narrow lanes. Send the galli, the house number and the nearest chowk, and say where a two-wheeler can stand.
Mangalwar Peth: a large peth on the southern side of the old city, bordering Shivaji Peth and Shaniwar Peth, where family homes stand beside small shops and workshops. Business families tend to value a fixed hour. Name the lane and a shop the tutor can spot from the corner.
Shaniwar Peth: the northern half of the old city, not far from Dasara Chowk, with houses, shops and offices on the same streets. Add the building or the house owner's name to the lane and chowk.
Uttareshwar Peth: an older residential peth on the western side, near the Rankala Bus Stand. Many requests are for younger children, where short lessons three or four times a week tend to suit better than one long weekend class.
Shahupuri and Rajarampuri
This is the city's working centre, around the railway terminus and the Central Bus Stand. Many tutors live in and near it, which makes a subject specialist easier to find here than at the edges, but the main roads are busy in the evening, so fix the slot early.
Shahupuri: main streets of shops, offices and showrooms, with families in apartment buildings and in flats over ground-floor businesses. Give the building, wing and floor, and let the watchman know a tutor is due.
Rajarampuri: laid out in numbered lanes off its main road, so the lane number goes first in any address, then the house or building and the floor. Senior science students here often look for a tutor who knows both the HSC syllabus and entrance-style questions.
Laxmipuri: a trading neighbourhood between the old peths and Shahupuri, with Bindu Chowk and Dasara Chowk on its old-city side. Some families live above or behind their shops, so pick an hour when business slows. Mention the shop name on the ground floor and any side entrance.
Sykes Extension: a quieter residential pocket on the eastern side of the centre, next to Rajarampuri, with apartment buildings and older houses. For a flat, send the building, wing and floor, and give the security desk the tutor's name in advance.
Tarabai Park and Kasaba Bawada
The northern zone runs from the New Palace, built between 1877 and 1884 in black polished stone, up to the city's northern edge.
Tarabai Park: apartment buildings and houses on quieter streets, a few streets from the New Palace. Requests often come for Classes 9 to 12. Give the building, wing and floor, or the plot and street for a house. Weekday evenings after school go first, so book early in the term for a fixed slot.
Nagala Park: just south of the New Palace grounds, with flats, older houses and offices on its main streets. Say whether you are on the palace side or the main-road side, which saves time on the first visit.
Kadamwadi: in the north-east of the zone, with older family houses and newer apartment buildings. Give the colony or lane, the house number and a nearby shop or chowk.
Kasaba Bawada: an old settlement on the northern edge, now part of the city, whose core keeps its named gallis and its own talathi office, with newer buildings around it. Lead with the galli or building name, then a landmark on the main road. Some children here train in wrestling or other sports, so share the practice timings when you book.
Line Bazar: mostly family houses and a few small buildings, between Kasaba Bawada and Tarabai Park, and mapped within the Kasaba Bawada area. Send the lane, the house number and a well-known shop or chowk.
Rankala and Radhanagari Road
West of the centre, beyond Rankala Lake, which began as a stone quarry before water filled it, the homes are mostly independent houses on regular lanes. This side is further from the centre, so a home tutor from these colonies is often paired with an online class for one specialist subject.
Sane Guruji Vasahat: a colony on a regular grid of lanes, on the Kolhapur to Radhanagari Road south-west of the lake. Give the lane or row number, the house number and which side of the Radhanagari Road you are on. Weekend mornings suit longer revision blocks before the SSC papers.
Phulewadi: along NH166G towards the western edge of the city, with independent houses and some newer buildings. Say how far you are from the NH166G turning, and keep evening classes early enough for a tutor riding back to the centre.
Apte Nagar: a quiet residential area close to Sane Guruji Vasahat and the Radhanagari Road. Use a turning or a shop on the Radhanagari Road as the first marker, then the lane name and house number.
Kalamba and Jarag Nagar
The southern zone sits around Kalamba Lake, built in 1873, which together with Rankala Lake supplies the city's drinking water. The four localities are next to one another, so a tutor from one of them is usually the nearest match for the others.
Kalamba: an old village area beside the lake, with newer residential lanes around it and mostly independent houses. Say whether you are in the old village part or one of the newer layouts.
Jarag Nagar: also written Baba Jarag Nagar, along Jarag Nagar Main Road, with row houses, independent homes and newer apartment buildings. Give the turning you take off the main road, then the lane and the house or building number, adding the wing and floor for a flat.
Pachgaon: a census town on the southern edge, next to Jarag Nagar and Kalamba, grown from a village into a residential suburb. Give the colony or plot name and a familiar marker on the road in.
Rajendra Nagar: in the south-east, along Morewadi Road, with independent houses and apartment buildings. Share the road you turn from, the lane, the house or building name and, for a flat, the floor. A weekday class after school, plus one longer Saturday session, suits many families here.
Boards, medium and exams in Kolhapur
Children across the city study under the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), CBSE and the CISCE's ICSE and ISC. The state board conducts the SSC examination at the end of Class 10 and the HSC examination at the end of Class 12, and its official site, mahahsscboard.in, lists a Kolhapur Divisional Board among its divisional boards. Check notices and dates only there.
Marathi is the main home language in the district, and Hindi and English are widely spoken, so the medium of instruction is worth stating in every request. A child who moves from Marathi-medium to English textbooks often does well with a tutor who explains a term in Marathi and then gives the English word.
Pages for each board: the Maharashtra State Board, CBSE and ICSE and ISC. Pages for each subject: maths, science, physics, chemistry, biology and English.
Many Class 11 and 12 science students prepare for MHT-CET, run by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra (cetcell.mahacet.org), or for JEE Main and NEET (UG), run by the National Testing Agency (nta.ac.in). Beside that work, a home tutor is most useful with a narrow brief, such as HSC chapters or the week's doubts. See JEE and NEET home tutors in Kolhapur.
At the table, on a screen, or both
Younger children usually settle faster with a tutor sitting beside them. A screen makes sense for a specialist who lives on the far side of the city, for a late slot, or for homes at the western and southern edges. Families can add an online tutor for Kolhapur students to a home plan whenever they need one. To plan fees around one tutor or several, read home tuition fees in Kolhapur, and weigh the two formats with home tutor or online tutor.
How NXTutors can help
Send us your child's class, board, medium and subjects, plus the Kolhapur locality you live in. Our shortlist has two or three matched tutors, starting with those closest to you, widening to your zone and the whole city, and adding online tutors from anywhere in India where a subject calls for it. Fees are visible before the demo, the first class with each tutor costs nothing, and you can switch tutor later at no charge. Every tutor goes through an ID check when joining, and the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete; the steps are on how we check tutors.

Frequently asked questions
Which Kolhapur localities are in this guide?
All twenty localities NXTutors lists for Kolhapur are in this guide, grouped into five zones. They are the Old City Peths, Shahupuri and Rajarampuri, Tarabai Park and Kasaba Bawada, Rankala and Radhanagari Road, and Kalamba and Jarag Nagar. Every locality name links to a page with address tips and the tutors we can suggest there.
What should we tell a tutor so they can find our home in Kolhapur?
Tell a Kolhapur tutor one reference point everyone knows, then the small details. Good markers are Mahadwar Chowk, the railway terminus, the Central or Rankala Bus Stand, the New Palace, or Rankala and Kalamba lakes. Then add the galli or numbered lane, the house or building, and the floor. In the old peths, say where a two-wheeler can stand.
Can we find a tutor who teaches in Marathi in Kolhapur?
Yes, you can ask NXTutors for a Kolhapur tutor who teaches in Marathi, English or both. Mention the board, the class and your child's medium of instruction in the request. We shortlist tutors who teach that way, nearest first. For a child moving from Marathi-medium to English textbooks, ask the tutor to explain each term in both languages.
How does a home tutor fit with MHT-CET, JEE or NEET preparation?
A home tutor fits alongside MHT-CET, JEE Main or NEET preparation when the brief is narrow, such as HSC chapters, board answers or the week's doubts. Share the whole weekly timetable, including junior college hours, so the slot leaves room for self-study. NXTutors makes no promise about exam outcomes; the family decides how much to add.
Is there a home tutor for our part of Kolhapur if we live at the edge?
Homes at the edge of Kolhapur can still find a tutor, because NXTutors searches outward in rings. We look in your locality and zone first, then across the city, then among online tutors in other states. In Phulewadi, Pachgaon or Kasaba Bawada, a common pattern is one nearby home tutor plus an online specialist, and each first class is a free demo.
Are the tutors NXTutors suggests in Kolhapur checked?
Yes, tutors suggested in Kolhapur have joined through an ID check, and the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete. Each shortlist holds two or three matched tutors, with their fees shown before any demo. You pay nothing for the first class with each tutor, and changing tutor later is free.
