Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Ask five families in Hubballi or Dharwad what they want from an English tutor and you may hear five different answers. A Class 3 child guesses at words instead of reading them. An SSLC student writes English as a second language and keeps losing marks on letters. A PU student follows every class but cannot set down a long answer. A CBSE or ICSE student needs literature answers with more substance. Another family simply wants a teenager to speak up with ease. Each of these needs a different kind of teacher. Tell NXTutors the paper, the weak skill and your locality; we send two or three English tutors who fit, show what each charges before you meet, and the first class is a free demo.
"English" covers several separate skills, and a teacher who shines at one may be ordinary at another. Naming the weak spot in your request changes who we suggest.
| Skill | Warning sign | Tutor's response |
|---|---|---|
| Reading for meaning | Comprehension answers written from memory rather than from the passage | Timed unseen passages, each answer pinned to the line that proves it |
| Grammar in use | The same mistakes in every piece of writing | A running list of the child's own errors, fixed one pattern per week |
| Formal writing | Letters and paragraphs marked down for layout | Formats settled early so later practice goes into content |
| Literature | Answers that retell the plot | Plan the points first, keep to the word limit, back each point with a detail |
| Speaking | Understands well, replies in single words | A spoken summary at every lesson, growing into short talks |
Start with the paper itself. KSEAB's list of SSLC blueprints shows English twice: once among the first-language papers and once as a second-language paper, next to Kannada. These are different exams with different demands, so be sure the tutor knows which one your child will actually sit. Later, at PU level, English is among the languages with published model question papers.
Patterns for these papers are revised from time to time, so we leave them to the latest blueprints on kseab.karnataka.gov.in and the PU portal. Instead, check the tutor's fit:
Our Karnataka board tutor in Hubballi-Dharwad page describes the full state route.
For 2026-27 the board paper has three blocks: reading, writing with grammar, and literature. With the weights in mind, a tutor can spend lesson time where the marks are instead of simply following the school chapter.
| Part | Marks | What is tested | Routine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 20 | A discursive passage and a factual, case-based one that includes a chart or data | One new passage weekly, answers traced to lines |
| Grammar | 10 | Items from the prescribed grammar list | Errors lifted from this week's homework and put right |
| Writing | 10 | A formal letter (5) and an analytical paragraph on a graph, map or chart (5) | One piece a week, the two types in turn |
| Literature | 40 | Two NCERT books: First Flight, and Footprints without Feet as supplementary reader | Two planned answers a week, marked for relevance |
| School marks | 20 | Set by the school, 5 of them for listening and speaking | A spoken recap to close each lesson |
Literature is half the board paper, and knowing the story is not enough: marks reward an answer that makes a point and supports it. A session that plans and drafts a couple of such answers tends to be worth more than one more page of grammar drills. For ICSE, see our ICSE Class 10 English papers guide.
Across the twin city Kannada is the language of home and street, and plenty of children learn in Kannada medium up to Class 10 before English-medium books arrive at PU or with a new school. A bilingual tutor can lean on Kannada at first and then withdraw it step by step:
The reverse need exists too. Families who have moved to the twin city from other states often want Kannada help as a second or third language alongside English; mention it, and we look for a tutor who can do both.
Yes. Speaking is part of exam English, not a separate hobby: CBSE schools award marks for listening and speaking, and CISCE tests both skills too. A simple routine has the child retell the day's passage aloud before the lesson ends, then move over a few weeks to short prepared talks with follow-up questions. Want interview fluency or day-to-day confidence more than marks? Tell us, because that calls for a different tutor. More ideas are in our spoken English guide for students.
Below Class 6 the target is smooth, confident reading; exam technique can come later. Signs of trouble include guessing at new words, losing the line, or closing the book quickly. Short and frequent works better than long and rare: sounding out new words, reading aloud to a patient listener who corrects gently, and retelling the story in the child's own words. In homes where English is seldom spoken, chatting about picture books builds listening as much as reading. Request a tutor with primary-years experience.
In Class 11, CBSE English Core gives 26 marks to reading, 23 to grammar with creative writing and 31 to literature; by Class 12 grammar drops out and literature takes more. ISC has one paper for language (a long composition, directed writing and a proposal) and one for literature, both covered in our ISC Class 12 English guide. IGCSE parents should ask the school whether their child is entered for First Language or a second-language syllabus, as the assessment differs. ISC, IGCSE and IB English teachers are scarcer in the twin city, which is where online lessons help; the national English home tutor guide covers each course in detail.
Tutors in the twin city usually come by scooter, auto or BRTS bus, so someone living on your side of the city is the natural first choice. Every locality is listed on our Hubballi-Dharwad page.
| Locality | Setting | Arrange first |
|---|---|---|
| Old Hubli | Long-settled family homes, often with grandparents at home | A known circle or shop as the landmark; an evening slot fixed early in the year |
| Deshpande Nagar | A settled central area that runs into its neighbours | Your road and nearest junction; one patient tutor for English, maths and EVS in the primary years |
| Keshwapur | Older houses beside newer flats, with children at many kinds of school | The board and textbook up front; a short weekday slot after school, a longer one at the weekend |
| Akshay Colony | Houses and apartment buildings near Vidyanagar | Block and flat number; a slot an hour after school so your child has rested |
| Gokul Road | Colonies along a long road running west | Colony, cross and side of the road; ask if the tutor will also help with reading and handwriting |
| Manjunath Nagar | A colony off Gokul Road with many families who moved here for work | Whether Kannada help is needed as well; your cross road, since nearby colony names sound alike |
From about Class 3, English also works well online, provided the tutor gets the written work ahead of the lesson as a phone picture or a shared file. Keep early readers and the first months of a medium change at home. The Hubballi-Dharwad home tuition guide covers every zone.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. English tutors set their own rates, usually reflecting the class and board, their familiarity with that paper, the trip at your chosen time and the lessons per week. You will see each fee on the shortlist first; our Hubballi-Dharwad home tuition fees article helps you compare.
Tell us the class, board and precise English paper, the skill that most needs work, your child's stronger language, your locality and landmark, the times you can offer, and a budget. We reply with two or three English tutors and their fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete (how we check tutors). For other subjects, our maths and science pages for Hubballi-Dharwad work the same way. English teachers living in Hubballi or Dharwad can see requests on Hubballi-Dharwad tuition jobs.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. An English tutor in Hubballi-Dharwad sets their own rate by class, board, paper, travel time and lessons a week, and you see it before the free demo.
NXTutors uses the weak skill, with the class, board, exact English paper, your child's stronger language, your locality and free times, to pick two or three matched tutors. Each fee is shown before the first class, which is a free demo. Another shortlisted tutor can demo if needed, and switching tutor later is free.
Yes, the tutor needs to know, because the first-language and second-language English papers ask for different things. KSEAB lists English among the SSLC first-language papers and separately as a second-language paper, and the demands differ. The tutor should teach from the prescribed textbook and practise with the board's model papers. Blueprints change, so check the current one on kseab.karnataka.gov.in before planning.
A bilingual tutor can explain in Kannada at first and then withdraw it step by step, while all written work stays in English. Rebuilding the child's own sentences, a page of English reading each day and a small stock of ready phrases help. Family and tutor then agree a date from which lessons run in English only.
Literature carries 40 of the 80 board marks, reading 20, grammar 10 and writing 10. Literature draws on First Flight and Footprints without Feet; writing is a formal letter and an analytical paragraph on a graph, map or chart. The school adds 20 more marks, 5 of them for listening and speaking.
Yes, because speaking is part of exam English: CBSE schools give marks for listening and speaking, and CISCE tests both. Each lesson can end with your child retelling the day's passage aloud, building to short prepared talks. If interview fluency matters more than marks, say so, since it calls for a different kind of tutor.
Yes, a family new to Dharwad can ask for help with both languages in the same request. Families who have moved to the twin city from other states often want Kannada as a second or third language alongside English. NXTutors then looks for a tutor who can teach both, or suggests a separate tutor for each.
Online English suits most children from about Class 3, provided the tutor sees the written work before each lesson as a photo or shared file. Early readers, and children in the first months of a medium change, usually do better with a tutor at home. Many families mix one home visit with one online lesson a week.
A student should write at least one full English answer, letter or paragraph for the tutor every week. The tutor marks it, rewrites one or two sentences beside the child's own, and returns it at the next lesson. Over a term this shows whether grammar, vocabulary or structure is the real gap, and the plan can shift towards it.
