Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Ask Gorakhpur parents what they want from an English tutor and the answers vary widely. One wants board marks for a UP Board child who thinks in Hindi and loses marks on translation. Another has a CBSE student who knows every story in the reader but writes thin literature answers. A third simply wants a child to speak in class without freezing. These are different jobs, and they need different tutors. Tell NXTutors the board, the class, the skill that worries you most and your locality, and we come back with two or three English tutors who suit, each with a fee. The first class with the one you choose is a free demo.
Most Gorakhpur children write English for the UP Board, CBSE or CISCE, and a smaller number for Cambridge or the IB. One subject name covers four quite different papers:
Other UP Board subjects are on our UP Board tutors in Gorakhpur page, and the national English home tutor guide treats each course at length.
Because both boards set the same two NCERT readers, First Flight and Footprints without Feet, a tutor covers the stories and poems only once. What a UP Board child and a CBSE child must do with them is where the papers part company:
| Section | UP Board | CBSE | Stress in lessons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unseen reading | 10 | 20 | Every answer traced back to a line in the passage |
| Writing | 10 | 10, split between a formal letter and a paragraph analysing a chart or graph | Layouts memorised early; content and connectors drilled |
| Grammar | 15, with 4 kept for putting four Hindi sentences into English | 10 | One error pattern at a time, taken from the child's own work |
| Literature | 35, of which First Flight gives 23 (15 prose, 8 poetry) and Footprints 12 | 40, from the same readers | A quick point plan, the word limit respected, a short quotation |
| Marked in school | 30 | 20, including 5 for listening and speaking | Closing each class with a one-minute oral summary |
The UP Board's model paper allows a reading period first. After that, Part A has 20 single-mark multiple-choice items shaded on OMR, and Part B holds 50 marks of written work. Literature is the biggest single block on each board, and it is where marks leak from children who remember the plot but answer loosely. Writing two literature answers a week from a short plan, then trimming them to the limit, tends to pay back faster than extra grammar drills.
Translation is a UP Board feature: four Hindi sentences for 4 marks at High School, and seven or eight for 5 marks at Intermediate. Examiners look for sound grammar rather than fancy words, which makes this question an excellent training ground for a child whose first language of thought is Hindi. Four steps a tutor can repeat each week:
A child changing from Hindi medium to English medium can use the same ladder: both languages in explanations to begin with, English-only written answers from the first week, and a date agreed with the tutor after which the lesson itself moves wholly into English.
The Intermediate English paper is a single paper out of 100. Reading comprehension is worth 15. Writing is worth 20: an article of roughly 150 words and one letter, either to a newspaper editor, of complaint, or on a business matter. Grammar, with the 5-mark translation inside it, brings 25. The remaining 40 are literature from Flamingo and Vistas, and poetry questions expect students to identify figures of speech. During the year, schools hold four unit tests that the syllabus describes as remedial; they do not count towards the result but tell a tutor precisely where to start. Quick wins for a tutor are the article and the letter, where a learned format plus a clear outline scores steadily, and a pocket card of figures of speech, each illustrated from a prescribed poem.
| Course | Demands | Tutor's part |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE English Core, Class 11 | 26 for reading, 23 for grammar and creative writing, 31 for literature (Hornbill, Snapshots) | Reading against the clock; short writing tasks |
| CBSE English Core, Class 12 | No grammar section any more; literature weighs more | Literature answers that cite the text |
| ISC English | A composition of 400 to 450 words chosen from six titles, directed writing, a proposal, plus a separate literature paper | Planning long writing and staying on the chosen title |
| IGCSE English | First or Second Language entry, decided by the school | Practice on the correct syllabus code |
| IB Language A | Includes unseen analysis and an individual oral | Close reading, and commenting aloud |
ISC, IGCSE and IB English teachers are thinner on the ground in Gorakhpur than UP Board or CBSE ones, so online lessons with a specialist are often the sensible route.
It can. The boards even give a reason to: CBSE, ICSE and ISC each set aside marks for listening and speaking. Start small, with your child retelling the day's passage in English at the end of every lesson, then move on to two-minute prepared talks and fast question rounds. If confident speaking is the real aim, put it first in your request, because a tutor who enjoys conversation is a different person from one who loves grammar. More ideas are in our spoken English guide for students.
For Classes 1 to 5, the work is reading fluently, writing neatly and understanding what was read. Short, frequent sessions suit young children better than one long one. Ask the tutor to bring a reader at the right level, spend part of each lesson on reading aloud, and note the words that cause trouble, returning to them every week. Ten quiet pages of reading on the days the tutor does not come make a real difference.
Every locality has a page on our Gorakhpur page. These six, in the centre and the older western side, show what to arrange.
| Locality | Setting | Family's part |
|---|---|---|
| Alinagar | An older central area, often written with Aryanagar, where families ask for English writing, spoken English and Hindi grammar | Say exactly which skill matters: spelling, letters, longer reading or speaking |
| Golghar | The centre of the city, lanes mixing homes with shops and offices | Building, floor and a shop everyone knows |
| Civil Lines | Settled and central, with students on every main board | Name the board and readers your child uses |
| Daudpur | Residential, near Betiahata and Civil Lines | A lane and a nearby crossing; tutors from Golghar may add it to their round |
| Turkmanpur | Old-city lanes west of the centre | A well-known shop or crossing, since the lanes confuse a first visit |
| Gorakhnath | The north-western side along Nepal Road | For two children, ask whether one tutor can teach them one after the other |
The Gorakhnath, Old City and GIDA zone page has more local detail. English also suits online lessons well; see our online tutors for Gorakhpur page.
If the fit is wrong, the next tutor on your shortlist gives a demo, and a later switch costs nothing. Our demo class checklist lists more signs.

A Gorakhpur family should tell NXTutors the class, board and medium, the skill that matters most, your locality with a landmark, and your free times. UP Board High School English gives Gorakhpur students a 70-mark paper and 30 internal marks. Reading and writing carry 10 each, grammar 15 including a 4-mark translation of four Hindi sentences, and literature 35, with First Flight worth 23 and Footprints without Feet 12. Part A is answered on an OMR sheet.
A Gorakhpur student scores well on UP Board translation by fixing the tense of each Hindi sentence before writing. Then check that each verb agrees with its subject, and keep a list of personal slips with articles and prepositions. Class 10 sets four sentences for 4 marks, and Class 12 seven or eight for 5 marks.
The UP Board Intermediate English paper is one 100-mark paper with reading 15, writing 20, grammar 25 and literature 40. Writing means an article of about 150 words and a letter to an editor, of complaint or on business. Literature comes from Flamingo and Vistas, and the poetry questions ask for figures of speech.
CBSE Class 10 English differs mainly in weights, though both boards use the same NCERT readers. CBSE gives 20 marks to reading against 10 on the UP Board, and 40 to literature against 35. CBSE has no translation question, and its 20 school marks include 5 for listening and speaking.
Yes, an English home tutor in Gorakhpur can build spoken confidence alongside board marks. A simple start is having your child retell the day's passage aloud at the end of each lesson, then moving to short prepared talks. Mention speaking in your request, since a conversation-minded tutor is a different match.
A Gorakhpur child moves from Hindi medium to English medium most smoothly with explanations in both languages at first. Written answers should be in English from the first week, and the tutor and family can agree a date after which lessons run fully in English. Translation practice helps the same skills.
ISC, IGCSE and IB English tutors are fewer in Gorakhpur than UP Board or CBSE English tutors. ISC asks for a 400 to 450 word composition and a separate literature paper, while IGCSE and IB have their own formats. An online specialist is often the sensible choice for these courses.
