Gorakhpur has its own UP Board regional office, at Raiganj, serving the city and the districts around it. Yet most of what a UP Board family needs is not at the office at all: it is on upmsp.edu.in, in the syllabus files, model papers and notices that the board publishes for every session. This page shows how to use them. It explains what the Gorakhpur office does, walks through the registration notices that catch families out, and then takes two High School papers, science and social science, apart to show how their marks are really earned. Every board fact here comes from the board's own website, read in October 2026; check it again for your child's year.
Its formal name is Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh, and its head office is at Prayagraj. It was set up there in 1921 by an act of the United Provinces Legislative Council and held its first examination in 1923. It recognises schools, prescribes courses and textbooks, and conducts two public examinations: High School after Class 10 and Intermediate after Class 12.
The board's contact page lists five regional offices: Meerut, Bareilly, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. The Gorakhpur office is at Raiganj. It serves eleven districts, among them Gorakhpur itself, Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti, Gonda, Bahraich, Balrampur and Shrawasti. The board sends questions about examinations, results, duplicate certificates and mark sheets, migration, verification and scrutiny to its regional offices.
One detail on that page matters for older records. Because the Gorakhpur office is described as newly created, the page asks families from its districts to go to the Varanasi regional office for work on examinations from 1986 to 2017, and to the Prayagraj head office for the years 1923 to 1985. Anyone chasing an older mark sheet should read that note first, and use only the contact details on upmsp.edu.in. A tutor has no role in these requests.
The board registers students well ahead. In the 2026–27 session its home page shows advance registration for Classes 9 and 11, for the examinations of 2028, and registration of Class 10 and 12 students, regular and private, for the 2027 examinations. Two recent notices on the same page are worth a parent's attention:
The board has also posted its 2027 High School and Intermediate examination programme in the notices list. Read the timetable there, not in a forwarded message.
The board's home page links two services worth knowing. Its results portal holds High School and Intermediate results, compartment and improvement results and certificates from 2003 to the present, and the Samadhan portal takes problems with mark sheets, certificates and results. The page also lists the 2026 scrutiny results by regional office, Gorakhpur among them, and notices for improvement and compartment papers. If a child needs one of those papers, a tutor's part is focused preparation in that subject.
The board's Class 10 science file sets 100 marks: a 70-mark written paper and 30 for practical work. The pass mark is written as 23 plus 10, so a student needs 23 from the paper and 10 from the practical. The written paper has five units.
| Unit | What it covers | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical substances: nature and behaviour | Chemical reactions and equations; acids, bases and salts; metals and non-metals; carbon and its compounds | 20 |
| The living world | Life processes; control and coordination; how organisms reproduce; heredity | 20 |
| Natural phenomena | Reflection and refraction of light; the human eye and the colourful world | 12 |
| Effects of current | Electricity; magnetic effects of electric current | 13 |
| Natural resources | Our environment | 5 |
The chemistry and biology units carry 40 of the 70 marks, so they need steady work from the first month. The file also says that the mirror formula and the lens formula need not be derived: a tutor should spend that time on using them, with sign conventions and ray diagrams, instead. In electricity, the file asks for the link between power, voltage, current and resistance, which suits short daily practice. Our science home tutors in Gorakhpur page covers the subject across boards.
The 30 practical marks are split in two. An external examiner awards 15: three experiments, one each from physics, chemistry and biology, at 4 marks each, and a viva worth 3. The school's own examiner awards the other 15: 9 for three projects, one from each science, and 6 for sessional work through the year.
The file lists fifteen experiments. They include finding the pH of samples such as dilute acid, lemon juice and water; sorting reactions into combination, decomposition, displacement and double displacement; arranging zinc, iron, copper and aluminium by reactivity; plotting current against voltage to find a resistance; preparing a slide of stomata from a leaf peel; finding the focal length of a concave mirror and a convex lens; and drawing the magnetic field lines of a bar magnet. A tutor cannot run the laboratory, but can make sure the child knows what each experiment shows, can draw it, and can face the viva.
Social science is also 70 written and 30 internal, but the internal marks are built differently. The written paper has four parts: history 20, geography 20, civics 15 and economics 15. Within history and geography, 5 marks each go to map work on an outline map of India, which means 10 marks of the paper depend on maps alone.
The 30 internal marks come in three blocks of 10: a project or activity in August, another in December, and 10 from the four school unit tests, whose total is scaled down to 10. The file marks each project for its content, its presentation, the way the work was carried out, and a short oral or written check that the student understood it. A tutor's job is to help the child plan and understand the project, never to produce it. Map practice, a few places each week, protects those 10 marks.
Both files set the same pattern of school unit tests: a multiple-choice test in the second week of July worth 20, ten of them for summer homework; a descriptive test in the last week of August; another multiple-choice test in the last week of November; and a descriptive test in the last week of December, each worth 20. In science, the file says these marks are not included in the result. In social science, the four together are converted into 10 internal marks.
Either way, a tutor should read every unit test paper: it is the year's clearest early warning, and shows whether the child is weaker at quick recall or at full written answers. The summer homework that feeds the July test is a sensible first task for a new tutor.

UP Board students in Gorakhpur write in Hindi or in English, and the board's own syllabus files are in Hindi. An English-medium tutor should still read them, since units and marks are the same in either language. When you send a request, name the board, the class and the language of the answer script together. The tutor may explain in whichever language your child follows fastest, but practice answers should use the terms of the paper your child will write. Our English home tutors in Gorakhpur page covers the English paper.
The Gorakhnath, Old City and GIDA, Asuran and Rapti Nagar and Taramandal and East Gorakhpur zone pages go further; every locality is on the Gorakhpur home tutors page, and our Gorakhpur home tuition guide covers each zone. For lessons on screen, see online tutors for Gorakhpur.

For an old UP Board mark sheet, a Gorakhpur family should follow the note on the board's contact page. Work on examinations from 1986 to 2017 for the Gorakhpur office's districts goes to the Varanasi regional office, and work on 1923 to 1985 goes to the Prayagraj head office.
UP Board High School science is marked out of 100 for Gorakhpur students in 2026–27: a 70-mark written paper and 30 practical marks. The pass mark is 23 from the paper plus 10 from the practical. The chemistry and biology units carry 20 marks each, the largest share of the paper.
The 30 practical marks in UP Board Class 10 science split into two halves of 15. An external examiner gives 12 for three experiments, one per science, and 3 for the viva. The school gives 9 for three projects and 6 for sessional work, so Gorakhpur students should keep project files on schedule.
Yes, the school unit tests count in UP Board Class 10 social science, while in science they do not. The four tests are converted into 10 of the 30 internal marks, beside an August and a December project of 10 each. A Gorakhpur tutor should read every test paper.
Map work carries 10 marks of the 70-mark UP Board High School social science paper: 5 in history and 5 in geography, on an outline map of India. Gorakhpur students should practise a few places every week with the tutor rather than leaving maps for the final revision weeks.
Gorakhpur parents should check two recent UP Board notices: one on entering the APAAR ID in online registration, and one on recording the date of birth carefully at admission. Ask the school to confirm both, since errors travel into the registration and onto the final certificate.
Yes, a Gorakhpur student can study UP Board subjects in English medium with a tutor, even though the board's syllabus files are in Hindi. Units and marks are the same in either language. Name the board, class and answer-script language together so practice answers use the right terms.
