JEE Main and JEE Advanced in a few lines

JEE (Main) is run by the National Testing Agency. Its 2026 bulletin described Paper 1 as a computer-based test in three subjects, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Each subject had 25 questions, of which 20 were multiple choice and 5 needed a numerical answer, giving 75 questions and 300 marks. A right answer added four marks and a wrong one took away one, in both kinds of question. There were two sessions and the better score was used, and the paper was offered in 13 languages, Hindi among them.

JEE (Advanced) is set by the IITs for candidates who qualify through Main under the brochure's rules. In 2026 it had two compulsory papers, available in English and Hindi, and a candidate could attempt it at most twice, in consecutive years. What a one-to-one tutor is actually for

A class, whether in school or in coaching, moves at the pace of the room. A tutor working with one student can stop at the exact line where the reasoning breaks. For a Gorakhpur JEE student that is useful in four ways:

• The stuck-problem file. Through the week the student marks every problem that could not be finished. The tutor takes them in turn, first asking what was attempted, so the student sees where the method went off course.
• Reading each test. After a class test or a mock, the tutor sorts every lost mark: the idea was not clear, the arithmetic slipped, the question was misread, or a guess was taken that should have been left. Each needs a different remedy.
• The one weak subject. Most students are steadier in two subjects than in the third. Regular, focused work on that third subject usually does more than a thin spread across all three.

Choosing a weekly slot that will last

A slot that works in July but collapses in November is no use. Put the school timetable and any class timetable next to each other and look for the gap that is free every single week. The table lists the gaps that tend to survive.

UP Board, CBSE or ISC: keeping the board paper in view

The NTA syllabus is built on the Class 11 and 12 content that most boards teach, so how much extra work is needed depends on your child's board.

• UP Board. For 2026–27 the board's Class 12 physics file sets a 70-mark written paper and 30 practical marks, with a pass mark written as 23 plus 10, so neither part can be skipped. Its Class 12 mathematics paper is worth 100 marks, and calculus alone carries 44 of them, which overlaps heavily with entrance work. Chemistry is a 70-mark paper spread over ten units. • CBSE. NCERT is the textbook, so content lines up closely. What slips is writing: months of quick objective answers can make the full, stepwise board answer feel slow. See CBSE home tutors in Gorakhpur.
• ICSE and ISC. The ISC syllabus is wide and runs in a different order, so the school order and the entrance order can separate in Class 11. A tutor should map the two side by side early. See ICSE and ISC tutors in Gorakhpur.
• The paper's language. If your child thinks in Hindi, decide early which language to sit Main in, from the languages the bulletin lists, and look for a tutor comfortable with the scientific vocabulary in it.

Five things to watch in the JEE demo

1. Did the tutor ask about the board, the school timetable and the last test before starting to teach?
2. Hand over three unsolved problems from your child's notebook. Did the tutor locate the faulty step in each and leave the finishing to your child?
3. Did your child follow easily in the language used, be it Hindi, English or both?
4. Did the tutor talk about when a doubtful question is better left blank, given the minus mark for a wrong answer?
5. Can the tutor keep the same weekly slot from where they live, through winter and the monsoon?
