Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

"Weak in English" can mean almost anything. For one Mangaluru child it is reading speed; for another it is a literature answer that stops after two sentences; for a third it is freezing when asked to speak in front of a class. Add the range of papers students here sit, from the Karnataka SSLC and PUC to CBSE, ICSE, ISC, IGCSE and the IB, and it is clear why a general "English teacher" is not enough. Tell NXTutors the board, the class, the skill that worries you and your locality. We send back two or three English tutors suited to that mix, each with a fee, and your first lesson with the one you pick is a free demo.
Most English problems fall into one of five skills. Naming the right one in your request changes which tutor we suggest, and what the first month of lessons looks like.
| Skill | How it shows up | What the tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Comprehension answers copied from the passage without being understood | Asks the child to explain each answer aloud before writing it |
| Grammar | The same tense or agreement mistake in every piece of writing | Collects errors from the child's own notebooks and drills one pattern at a time |
| Writing | Letters and paragraphs with ideas but no order | Teaches the frame once, then varies the topic every week |
| Literature | Knows the story, writes thin answers | Plans answers in points and links each point to a line in the text |
| Speaking | Understands everything but answers in single words | Ends each lesson with a short spoken summary and builds towards talks |
The SSLC and the II PUC examination are both conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). In 2026 the SSLC ran as Exam 1 and Exam 2. Since the board sets and revises its own English papers, we do not describe them here; the patterns and dates to rely on are the ones on kseab.karnataka.gov.in.
For a state-syllabus student, three requests cover most needs: a tutor who teaches from this year's prescribed English books; regular practice on the board's model and past papers; and the same care over letters, reports and comprehension that any board's writing section deserves. If your child moved into English-medium study from Kannada or another language, ask for someone happy to explain in both for a few months, then switch the lesson fully to English by an agreed point in the year. Our Karnataka board tutor in Mangaluru page covers the state route in more detail.
| Section | Marks | What is set | Weekly task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literature | 40 | Questions on First Flight and Footprints without Feet | Two planned answers, marked for relevance and word limit |
| Reading | 20 | A discursive passage, plus a factual case-based one carrying a chart or data | One unseen passage, each answer traced back to its line |
| Grammar | 10 | Items from the grammar list in the syllabus | Corrections drawn from the child's own writing |
| Writing | 10 | A formal letter (5) and an analytical paragraph on a chart, graph or map (5) | One letter or one paragraph, alternating |
| School assessment | 20 | Set by the school; listening and speaking make up 5 | A spoken summary to close the lesson |
Half of the board paper is literature. A child who can retell every story yet writes brief, general answers loses more here than anywhere else, so a tutor should spend more time on planned literature answers than on extra grammar worksheets.
At primary level, exam technique matters far less than fluent reading. A child who stumbles over new words or loses their place gains most from short, frequent practice: breaking new words into sounds, reading a page aloud to someone who corrects kindly, then telling the story back in their own words. Brief, regular sessions do more than a single long one. If English is rarely heard at home, a tutor who chats about pictures and simple stories builds the child's listening along with reading. Ask for a primary specialist rather than a senior-class teacher.
CBSE English Core in Class 11 is weighted 26 for reading, 23 for grammar and creative writing and 31 for literature from Hornbill and Snapshots; in Class 12 grammar leaves and literature takes a bigger share. ISC English is a language paper and a literature paper, both with project work. IGCSE students should confirm their entry, First or Second Language, early. IB Language A rewards close reading of unfamiliar texts and a confident individual oral. Specialists for ISC, IGCSE and IB are fewer in Mangaluru, which is where online lessons help. For more, see the national English home tutor guide, and our articles on the ICSE Class 10 English papers and ISC Class 12 English.
Spoken English fits inside this work rather than beside it, because CBSE, ICSE and ISC all give marks for listening and speaking. If confidence for interviews or presentations is the real goal, say so in your request; it changes the tutor we look for. Our spoken English guide for students has practical ideas.
Tutors in Mangaluru mostly come by city bus, auto or two-wheeler, so a tutor who lives on your side of the busier junctions is usually the most dependable. All localities are on the Mangaluru home tuition page.
| Locality | Type of home | Arrange beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Bejai | Mostly apartment buildings in a belt known for tall residential towers | A gate sign-in, and a slot clear of office closing near the KSRTC bus stand |
| Bendur | Flats and some tall towers around the Bendoorwell junction | The tutor's name at the security desk; weekday evening traffic towards Pumpwell |
| Balmatta | A settled residential side behind busy Balmatta Road, with taller buildings | Evening or weekend lessons, when the main road is calmer |
| Kodialbail | Homes among schools, colleges and shops, with newer apartment buildings | A start after the late-afternoon crowd near the colleges |
| Nanthoor | Apartment towers and houses around a very busy junction | Gate or door, and a tutor who need not cross the junction at the peak |
| Hampankatta | Flats among offices and shops around the Clock Tower circle | Easy to reach by bus or train; tell the watchman the block and flat number |
The Kadri and Bejai and Hampankatta and City Centre zone pages list landmarks and calmer hours, and the Mangaluru home tuition guide covers the whole city.
From roughly Class 3, online English is effective as long as the tutor sees written work in advance, through photos or a shared document, and it brings ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists within reach. A tutor in the room is better for early readers, for a child in the first months of a change of medium, and for anyone whose speaking grows faster face to face. In the wettest monsoon weeks, an online lesson with the same tutor saves the week. After the demo, ask yourself: did the tutor read a marked school answer first; did my child write or speak at length; could the tutor explain how my child's paper is built? If not, tell us and the next demo is with someone else from the shortlist; a later change of tutor is free too. The demo class checklist for parents adds more.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Rates are the tutors' own. A senior or international course usually sits higher than primary reading support, and the journey at your chosen time and the number of lessons each week also count. All fees are visible before the demo; read home tuition fees in Mangaluru for questions to ask.
Mention the class and board, the skill from the table above that concerns you, the language your child is most comfortable in, your locality and a landmark, and the times that suit. You will receive two or three matched English tutors with their fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID, as our ID check page describes. Other subjects in the city are on our maths and science pages for Mangaluru. If you teach English in Mangaluru, open requests are listed on Mangaluru tuition jobs.

Yes. We look for tutors who teach from this year's prescribed state books and practise from the board's model and past papers. KSEAB conducts both the SSLC and the II PUC examination and revises its schemes, so the current English pattern should be taken from kseab.karnataka.gov.in.
Literature carries 40 of the 80 board marks, reading 20, grammar 10, and writing 10, made up of a formal letter and an analytical paragraph on a chart, graph or map. The school adds 20 internal marks, of which 5 are for listening and speaking.
Yes. A good tutor explains in both languages at first, uses two-way translation to show where sentences break, builds a daily reading habit and gives ready frames for answers. Agree a point, often after the first term, from which the whole lesson runs in English.
Many do, and it fits naturally with board preparation, since CBSE, ICSE and ISC all mark listening and speaking. Lessons can end with short spoken summaries and build up to talks and mock interviews. If spoken confidence is the main goal, say so in your request.
From about Class 3 upwards, yes, as long as written work reaches the tutor before each lesson. Online lessons also open up ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists. Young readers and students in their first months of English-medium study usually gain more from a tutor in the room.
We match across Hampankatta and the centre, Kadri and Bejai, Kankanady and Jeppu, the Urwa to Kavoor stretch along the Airport Road, and Surathkal. When nobody suitable can reach your home at your preferred time, we suggest online lessons or a mix of home and online.
