Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Mangaluru is a long city. From Surathkal and Kulai in the north, down the Airport Road through Kavoor and Bondel, past Kadri and the centre at Hampankatta, to Jeppu and Bolar on the Netravati, a tutor who lives at one end may simply be too far from a family at the other for a weekly evening visit. Add the heavy monsoon months, the busy junctions at office closing time and the narrow range of specialists in some subjects, and online tuition starts to look less like a compromise and more like the practical choice for certain students. This page sets out when online lessons work well for Mangaluru families, when a home tutor is still the better call, how to arrange online classes through NXTutors, what your child needs on the desk, how to tell whether it is working, and how to mix home and online with one tutor.
Online is not right for every child. Children up to about Class 5 learn reading, handwriting and early number work most easily with an adult beside them watching the pencil. Some older students drift on a screen, and a parent usually knows within a week whether that is happening. A student rebuilding maths or physics from a weak base also benefits from a tutor who can see every line of working as it is written. And if a strong tutor already lives in your own part of the city, a home visit costs little in travel and gives the most contact. In those cases, keep online as the back-up rather than the main format.
| Situation | Suggested format | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Primary child, any part of the city | Home | Handwriting and early reading need someone beside the child |
| SSLC or CBSE Class 10 student, tutor in the same zone | Home, with online on heavy-rain days | Working and diagrams are corrected as they happen; the fallback keeps the routine |
| II PUC science student with a coaching programme | Online for doubt checks, home for one weak subject | Long college days leave only late slots |
| IB or IGCSE student | Online specialist, sometimes with a local tutor for one subject | Specialists for these programmes are spread thinly |
| Family on the Surathkal side wanting a centre-based tutor | Online | The highway journey at shift-closing time is hard to keep up every week |
| Repeat-year entrance student | Mix: daytime home sessions plus online paper reviews | Daytime visits avoid the evening rush; reviews work well on a shared screen |
The home tutor or online tutor comparison takes these trade-offs one at a time.
You may also see online tutors when you searched for home tuition. If few local tutors match a Mangaluru request, the search widens from your locality to its zone, the city, the rest of Karnataka and then tutors across India who teach online, and every card says where the tutor is based. An online name on the list usually means the specialist you asked for does not live within easy reach. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID (see how we check tutors). The ID check is not a police or background check; the demo is where you judge the teaching itself.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Laptop or tablet | A phone screen is too small for graphs, ledgers and long derivations |
| A second camera on the page: a phone clipped above the notebook, or a tablet with a stylus | Working has to be seen line by line as it is written; a photo of the finished answer hides where it went wrong |
| A shared whiteboard or document | Both can write on it, and it becomes the lesson's notes |
| Headset with a microphone | Homes are rarely quiet in the evening |
| A desk in a common room, well lit | Fewer distractions, and parents can see what is happening |
| A backup connection and a charged device | Heavy rain can bring power cuts or a weak signal; a phone hotspot saves the session |
Test every part of it in the free demo. If the tutor cannot follow your child's working clearly, fix that before the first paid class. Our article on online and offline tutoring has more practical tips.
Good signs: your child speaks and writes more than the tutor; mistakes are caught mid-step with a question rather than simply corrected; both cameras stay on; the material is the school's own tests, the board's model papers or past papers rather than generic worksheets; and each class ends with a short written note of what was covered and what to practise.
Warning signs: the tutor reads from slides for most of the hour; homework is never checked; your child cannot say afterwards what they learnt; or the connection fails so often that the lesson never settles. Raise it after the first week, and if nothing changes, ask for the next tutor. The demo class checklist for parents lists further questions.
Many arrangements that work in a coastal city are not purely one or the other. With a tutor who can visit sometimes, try one of these:
Keeping one person across both formats matters more than which format you choose.
Board material moves online easily. SSLC and II PUC students can work through the Karnataka board's model papers and blueprints on a shared screen, CBSE students through the current sample papers, and ICSE or ISC students through the council's specimen papers. Ask the tutor to keep every marked script in one shared folder, so both you and your child can see, week by week, which mistakes are fading and which keep coming back.
A few house rules, agreed in the first week, protect your child and make the lessons easier to supervise:
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. With no journey to cover, a tutor may quote a lower figure for online lessons, while a sought-after specialist often keeps one rate for both. In practice the class, the board, the subject and how many lessons you book each week matter more to the total than the format. Every tutor's fee is visible to you before the demo; read the pricing guide and our post on home tuition fees in Mangaluru.
Tell us the class, board and subjects, whether you want online only or a mix with home visits, your locality and a landmark if visits are part of the plan, and the evenings that suit. To see who teaches near you first, open a locality page such as Jeppu, Bolar, Bondel, Kavoor, Surathkal or Hosabettu; each one lists nearby tutors first and then online options. The zone pages for Kankanady and Jeppu, Urwa to Kavoor and Surathkal explain how tutors travel in each part of the city.
Book a free demo class, browse tutor profiles, or start from our Mangaluru tutors page and the Mangaluru home tuition guide. Board-specific help is on the Karnataka Board, CBSE and ICSE and ISC pages for Mangaluru, and entrance help on the JEE and NEET pages. Teachers can find requests on Mangaluru tuition jobs.
When the specialist you need lives elsewhere, such as for IB, IGCSE, an ISC elective or JEE Advanced; when your home and the right tutor sit at opposite ends of the city; when only a late-evening slot is free; or when heavy monsoon days keep interrupting home visits.
Pick Online on the switch under the home page search, or include the word online in your search. Location then stops limiting the results. The online tutor listing can also be filtered by subject, board, class, fee ceiling, experience, rating and tutor gender, and the demo request has a Mode field for online.
Yes. Set the Mode field on the demo request to online and add the class, board and times that suit. We reply with two or three tutors and their fees, and the first class with the one you choose is a free lesson on screen. You and the tutor agree the video tool and how written work is shared.
A laptop or tablet, a headset with a microphone, and a live view of the notebook, either a phone on a stand pointing down at the page or a stylus tablet. Add a shared whiteboard, a table in a shared room, and a phone hotspot for rainy evenings when the power or signal drops.
Yes. A common pattern is a weekend visit for new topics and handwritten practice, with online sessions midweek for homework checks and doubts. Another is home lessons in the dry months and online on heavy-rain days, with the same tutor and the same slot. Keeping one tutor across both matters most.
Usually not as the main format. Children up to about Class 5 learn reading, handwriting and early number work most easily with someone beside them. Short online sessions with a parent nearby can help with reading practice or revision, and an older child can move online once steady study habits are in place.
Sometimes. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Online removes travel, which can lower a quote, though specialists may charge similar rates.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
