Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Durgapur is a city of several languages. Many homes speak Bengali, many speak Hindi, and plenty switch between the two, while school might be in either of them or in English. So English means different things to different children here. For a Bengali-medium student on the West Bengal board, it is usually the second language in Madhyamik. For a CBSE or ICSE student, it is the language of every paper. For an older student, it may be the confidence to speak up in an interview. Share the board, the skill that worries you and where you live. A shortlist of two or three English tutors comes back, fees printed beside each, and the tutor you prefer gives the opening lesson as a free demo.
"English" appears on every timetable, yet a Madhyamik paper, an ICSE paper and an IB oral test quite different things.
| Board | End of Class 10 | End of Class 12 | Material to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| WBBSE, then WBCHSE | Madhyamik: English as first or second language, depending on the student's first language | Higher Secondary: English within the two compulsory language subjects | The board's and council's own books and notices |
| CBSE | Language and Literature: 80 on the board paper, 20 assessed in school | English Core: 80 written, 20 for listening, speaking and a project | The NCERT readers; CBSE's own sample papers with their marking schemes |
| CISCE | ICSE: two papers, language and literature, 80 each, with internal marks | ISC: two 80-mark papers, with project work | The council's set texts and specimen papers |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE: First Language English 0500, or English as a Second Language 0510/0511 | IB Language A, which includes an individual oral | Past papers for whichever entry the school made |
Find this out first, because it decides the whole tuition plan. In its routine for Madhyamik 2027, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education lists the first-language papers a student may choose, among them Bengali, English and Hindi. A student whose first language is anything other than English takes English as the second language; a student whose first language is English takes Bengali or Nepali as the second. So a Durgapur student who writes Bengali or Hindi as the first language sits English as the second-language paper.
A tutor for a second-language student should work from the English textbook the school uses, build sentence accuracy before style, and give regular short writing tasks that are corrected the same week. A student taking English as the first language needs more on literature and longer compositions. We do not quote marks for the Madhyamik English papers here; check the current syllabus on wbbse.wb.gov.in. Our West Bengal board tutors in Durgapur page covers the other Madhyamik subjects.
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education requires two language subjects, a first and a second, alongside three electives. Its subject list pairs English with Bengali, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Santhali, Odia, Telugu, Gujarati or Punjabi in different combinations. English therefore stays a compulsory part of most students' Class 11 and 12 work, whether they are in science, commerce or the humanities. The council's semester system means a multiple-choice paper before each written one, so reading speed and precise grammar matter from Class 11. Check the council's syllabus on wbchse.wb.gov.in for the current English papers.
CBSE's Class 10 students read the NCERT books First Flight and Footprints Without Feet. Under the 2026-27 curriculum the board paper is divided like this:
| Part of the paper | Marks | Practice at home |
|---|---|---|
| Literature (questions on First Flight and Footprints Without Feet) | 40 | Answers planned in points, kept to the word limit, with a phrase from the text |
| Reading (two unseen passages: one discursive, one factual with a chart or data) | 20 | A timed passage each week, with each answer matched to its line |
| Grammar (items from the syllabus list) | 10 | A personal list of the child's repeated errors, fixed one type at a time |
| Writing (one formal letter; one analytical paragraph on a map, chart or graph) | 10, as 5 and 5 | Layout settled early, then new content and connectives every week |
Inside the school's 20 marks, listening and speaking account for 5. Since literature is half of what is written in the hall, a couple of corrected literature answers every week tend to help more than one extra grammar sheet. See our CBSE home tutors in Durgapur page for other subjects.
The move often happens at Class 11, when a Madhyamik student joins an English-medium Higher Secondary section or a CBSE or ISC school. The student is meeting harder content in a less familiar language at the same moment. A tutor should start bilingual and finish in English, in planned steps:
It can, and the board marks reward it: listening and speaking are assessed on CBSE, ICSE and ISC. A tutor might close each session by asking the student to retell the passage aloud, then move over the months to two-minute talks and mock questions. Where the goal is fluency itself, for a job or college interview, a group discussion or a class presentation, mention it when you write to us; we would then suggest a different kind of tutor. Our spoken English guide for students explains what helps.
At this age the goal is a child who enjoys reading, not one who knows exam formats. Signs of trouble include a child who guesses each word from how it begins, skips lines, or quietly puts books away. Little and often helps most: decoding new words together, reading aloud with kind correction, and asking the child to tell the story back. In homes where little English is spoken, the tutor can chat in English about a picture book and fall back on Bengali or Hindi only when needed. Some families like the tutor to build reading in English and Bengali side by side, with a small notebook of words each week. Ask for someone who has taught primary classes.
CBSE English Core in Class 11 is built from Hornbill and Snapshots; its marks go 31 to literature, 26 to reading, and 23 to grammar with creative writing. Class 12 moves to Flamingo and Vistas, with reading 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40, plus 20 internal. ISC has two 80-mark papers with project work: a language paper with a composition from a choice of topics, directed writing, a proposal, grammar and comprehension, and a separate literature paper. With IGCSE, the first job is to confirm whether your child is entered for First Language or Second Language English. IB Language A students practise analysing unseen texts and prepare an individual oral. Durgapur has few teachers for these courses, so expect to go online; our national English home tutor page describes each one in detail.
Choosing a tutor who lives on your side of Durgapur keeps lessons regular. Our Durgapur home tutors page lists every locality.
| Neighbourhood | Homes | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| A-Zone | Planned township grid; independent houses and quarters | For young readers, English and Bengali built side by side; quarter number exactly as on the gate |
| B-Zone | Quarters and houses on straight numbered roads | Short weekday lessons and a longer weekend one if evenings hold sports or music |
| Benachity | Older lanes of houses, shops and small buildings | A tutor who can switch between Bengali, Hindi and English when a point gets hard |
| Bhiringi | Unplanned lanes around Bhiringi More | A patient tutor for young children, and a parent at home for the first few weeks if you prefer |
| Mamra | Houses and flats near the township roads | For a flat, building, block and floor; a place for the tutor's two-wheeler |
| Amarabati Colony | A compact residential colony | A grammar refresher from Class 8 in the first fortnight of Class 9 |
The zone pages for City Centre, A-Zone and B-Zone and Fuljhore, Mamra and Palashdiha add local tips, and the Durgapur home tuition guide describes each zone of the city.
From roughly Class 3, yes, as long as the tutor gets the written work ahead of time: photos of the notebook or a shared document. A screen also opens the door to ISC, IGCSE and IB teachers who do not live in Durgapur. In-person lessons still win for children learning to read, for the first months after a switch of medium, and for spoken practice. Where the right tutor is far away, one week can be a visit and the next a video lesson; our online tuition in Durgapur page shows what an online lesson involves.
Missing any of these? Let us know; a different tutor from the shortlist gives the next demo, and changing tutor later is free.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fees. Three questions sort a shortlist quickly: which board's English papers have you prepared students for, how do you return marked writing between lessons, and how often would you come? Each fee is visible before the demo; the Durgapur home tuition fees guide explains more.
When you write to us, include the class and board, whether English is a first or second language, the area that needs most help (reading, writing, grammar, literature or speaking), the home language, your neighbourhood and a landmark, and your days and times. Usually yes: under the board's Madhyamik routine, a student whose first language is not English takes English as the second language. A student with English as the first language takes Bengali or Nepali as the second. Confirm your child's choice with the school, because it decides how the English tutor plans the year.
The Higher Secondary course requires two language subjects, and the council's subject list pairs English with Bengali, Hindi and several other languages. So most Durgapur students keep English through Classes 11 and 12, whatever their stream. Check the current English syllabus on wbchse.wb.gov.in before planning lessons with a tutor.
In 2026-27, CBSE Class 10 English gives 40 of the 80 board marks to literature from First Flight and Footprints Without Feet. Reading passages carry 20, grammar 10, and writing 10, as a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking.
A tutor can help by starting bilingual and moving steadily into English. Short passages translated both ways from Bengali or Hindi show where tense and word order slip. Daily reading with two new words, ready openings for answers and an agreed date to switch fully to English complete the plan.
Yes, an English home tutor can build spoken English, and board papers on CBSE, ICSE and ISC also mark listening and speaking. Lessons can end with the student retelling a passage aloud, building towards short talks and mock questions. If fluency for interviews or presentations is the main goal, say so in your request.
Short reading practice on several days a week helps a young child more than one long session. Decoding new words together, reading aloud with gentle correction and retelling the story all build confidence. Where little English is spoken at home, the tutor can use Bengali or Hindi only when the child is stuck.
ICSE English has two papers, language and literature, each worth 80 marks with internal marks added. ISC also has two 80-mark papers with project work; its language paper includes a composition, directed writing, a proposal, grammar and comprehension. A tutor should work from the prescribed texts and the council's specimen papers.
In an English demo, watch whether the tutor reads a recent school answer before teaching anything. Your child should be at ease, speak or write for a real stretch, and hear more English as the lesson goes on. You should leave knowing the homework and the plan for the next four weeks.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
