For a Durgapur family on the state syllabus, in Bengali, Hindi or English medium, the route has two owners. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) looks after school up to Class 10 and sets the Madhyamik Pariksha at its end; Classes 11 and 12, and the Higher Secondary examination itself, belong to the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE), which now examines in four semesters. This page draws only on what the two bodies publish on their own websites: the board's 2026 academic calendar and its Madhyamik 2027 routine, and the Council's subject list, examination FAQ and question pattern. It then turns those documents into a plan a home tutor in Durgapur can follow, with notes on the zones tutors travel between and the questions worth asking at the demo. Notices change, so check the official sites before you plan around a date.
Parents often say "the West Bengal board" for the whole journey, but a notice, a syllabus or a routine comes from one body or the other. WBBSE has its head office in Salt Lake, Kolkata, and works through regional offices; its Burdwan Regional Council Office covers Paschim Bardhaman, Durgapur's district. WBCHSE was set up under the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education Act, 1975, is based at Karunamoyee, Salt Lake, with four regional offices of its own.
| Years | Body | How the student is assessed |
|---|---|---|
| Classes 6 to 8 | WBBSE schools | Formative and summative assessment in school |
| Classes 9 and 10 | WBBSE | Internal Formative Evaluation and school summatives, then the Madhyamik Pariksha |
| Class 11 | WBCHSE | Semester I, all one-mark questions, then Semester II on paper; the school conducts both |
| Class 12 | WBCHSE | Semester III, again one-mark questions, then Semester IV on paper; the Council conducts both at centres |
Families on CBSE or the CISCE can turn to CBSE home tutors in Durgapur or ICSE and ISC tutors in Durgapur; the Durgapur home tutors page explains how matching works.
The board's 2026 calendar fixes the timetable every recognised school must follow. The appointed hour is 10:35 in the morning, prayer runs from 10:40, eight periods follow with a tiffin break, and the day ends at 4:30 in the afternoon, six days a week with a shorter Saturday. Where two shifts share one building, the calendar asks schools to keep the morning shift intact and fit the day shift around it.
For tuition this is unusually helpful. A student in a day-shift school has a free morning, so a home tutor can come before school, when the child is fresh and roads are quieter. Evening sessions work too, after the child has eaten and rested. Sundays suit a longer sitting for a practice paper. Ask your child's school which shift they are in before you agree a slot, because a morning-shift timetable reverses all of this.
One line in the calendar surprises some parents. It quotes Kolkata Gazette notification 214/SE, dated 8 March 2018: teachers at recognised schools must not engage in private tuition for personal gain. Your child's home tutor should therefore come from outside the school, which also keeps the tutor's view of progress independent.
The calendar's routine structure names the subjects and, for the lower classes, the textbook series. A tutor who knows these names can follow the school book chapter by chapter rather than a guidebook.
| Class | Subjects named |
|---|---|
| 6 | First and second language; mathematics (Ganit Prava); environment and science (Paribesh-o-Bigyan); environment and history (Otit-o-Oitijya); environment and geography (Amader Prithibi); health, physical, art and work education |
| 7 and 8 | As in Class 6, with a third language added |
| 9 and 10 | First language; second language; Mathematics (Ganit Prakash); History and Environment; Geography and Environment; Physical Science and Environment; Life Science and Environment; an optional elective |
Classes 9 and 10 carry 44 periods a week. Their progress is tracked through Internal Formative Evaluation as well as three summative evaluations, normally held early in April, early in August and early in December. After the third summative, until results come out, schools are asked to use classes for remedial teaching. The calendar also asks that free textbooks reach students by January, and that used books are returned to school after promotion, so a tutor should not write in a borrowed copy. Durgapur's maths and science tutor pages cover the subjects themselves.
The board notified the routine for Madhyamik Pariksha 2027 on 13 July 2026. The 2027 papers are spread from 15 to 25 February, with a single subject each day. Candidates get a quarter of an hour from 10:45 only to read the question paper, and writing in most subjects finishes at 2:00 pm. Languages come first, then History and Geography, then Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Science, and the optional electives, each with its own timing, close the series. The board keeps the right to change the schedule, so treat its own notice as final.
| Paper | Options listed |
|---|---|
| First language | Bengali, English, Gujarati, Gurumukhi (Punjabi), Hindi, Modern Tibetan, Nepali, Odia, Santali, Tamil, Telugu or Urdu |
| Second language | English if the first language is not English; Bengali or Nepali if it is |
The order shapes revision. Mathematics and the two sciences come in the second week, after four papers in languages and social science, so they must be fully revised before February rather than squeezed in between papers. Durgapur homes speak Bengali, Hindi or both, and the first-language choice affects which tutor fits: a Hindi first-language student needs a tutor who can teach that paper, not only Bengali.
The Council's examination FAQ lays out the semester system. Class 11 has Semesters I and II; Class 12 has Semesters III and IV. The first and third semesters are made up of multiple-choice questions, and Semester I may use an OMR sheet supplied by the school. Semesters II and IV are written on ordinary answer scripts. The school conducts Semesters I and II; the Council holds III and IV at examination centres. Normally, September is the month for the objective semesters and March for the written ones.
Practicals and projects are assessed in the student's own school, on a question paper and answer script the Council sends, and they come ahead of the written semester in each class. A student must pass Semesters I and II, with theory and practical counted separately, before moving to Semester III. Mathematics carries 80 theory marks in each class, 40 in each semester; physics, chemistry and Biological Science carry 70, or 35 in each semester.
The Council's science question pattern decides which chapters are tested which way. Two Class 12 examples show why a tutor must plan from it:
| Subject | Semester III (multiple choice) | Semester IV (written) |
|---|---|---|
| Biological Science | Reproduction; genetics and evolution | Biology and human welfare; biotechnology; ecology and environment, including a 4-mark competency-based question |
| Chemistry | Liquid state, p-block elements, haloalkanes and haloarenes, alcohols, phenols and ethers, biomolecules, polymers | Electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, d- and f-block elements, coordination compounds, aldehydes, ketones and acids, nitrogen compounds |
So a chemistry student needs quick, exact recall of p-block and organic facts for September, then full written working in electrochemistry and kinetics for March. Our Durgapur biology, chemistry and physics pages go deeper into each subject.
The Council asks each student for two languages plus three compulsory electives, with a fourth, optional elective allowed, all drawn from a single set. The sets match the familiar streams.
| Set | Core choices | Some alternatives in the set |
|---|---|---|
| Set I (science) | Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biological Science | Nutrition, Geography, Economics, Agriculture, Statistics, Psychology, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science |
| Set II (commerce) | Accountancy, Costing and Taxation, Business Studies | Statistics, or Commercial Law and Preliminaries of Auditing; Economics or Applied Artificial Intelligence; Business Mathematics and Basic Statistics or Mathematics |
| Set III (arts) | Philosophy, with History, Geography, Political Science and others | Education, Sociology, Journalism and Mass Communication, Sanskrit, Basic Mathematics for Social Sciences, Psychology |
Some approved schools offer vocational subjects. These count only as the optional subject, and they rule out Economics, Music, Visual Arts and Physical Education as electives for that student. In the language group, English, Bengali, Hindi, Gujarati, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Santhali, Telugu and Urdu can be the first language, and English, Bengali, Hindi, Alternative English or Nepali the second. Our article on how to pick a board and stream and the English tutors in Durgapur page help with the choice.
The Council lists the boards whose Class 10 it accepts, and CBSE, the CISCE, the NIOS secondary examination and the Cambridge IGCSE are among them. A student switching in will notice the testing first. The September semesters are entirely one-mark questions, which reward speed and exact textbook recall, and the ban on calculators hits IGCSE students hardest. The Council also approves its own books, and answers should use their terms. Most of this can be fixed with a tutor during the opening months of Class 11. Students moving the other way can read our Durgapur CBSE and ICSE and ISC pages.
| Stage | Focus | Usual rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Classes 6 to 8 | Ganit Prava and the environment books read properly; written answers in the school's medium | Two sessions a week |
| Class 9 | Ganit Prakash chapters in order, steady work before each summative, IFE tasks done on time | Two a week |
| Class 10 | Syllabus finished by the December summative; timed papers in January; revision in the routine's order | Two or three a week |
| Class 11 | Objective drills for September, then long answers and practical files for March | One or two sessions per subject weekly |
| Class 12 | The Council's September paper, then descriptive answers and practicals, with entrance work for science students | Two per core subject near the end |
Science students who plan to sit WBJEE deal with a different authority altogether, the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board; see our WBJEE tutors page. National entrance help is on our JEE and NEET pages for Durgapur.
State-board tuition tends to run for a year or longer at two or three visits a week, so the tutor's route must be one they can repeat without strain. From our zone guides:
Our Durgapur home tuition guide goes zone by zone. Families in other parts of the state can see the West Bengal board tutors in Kolkata page, or the Asansol and Kolkata home tutor pages.
In Madhyamik maths and Physical Science, sitting beside the student lets a tutor catch each step and diagram as it happens, which matters when every written step can earn or lose a mark. For the Council's multiple-choice semesters, short online drills work well: a timed set of one-mark questions, checked at once, two or three evenings a week. One workable mix is a home visit for written work plus an online slot for objective drills, with more online in the autumn holidays, when families travel. Read online tuition in Durgapur and our home and online comparison.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education runs school up to Class 10 and the Madhyamik Pariksha. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education runs Classes 11 and 12 and the Higher Secondary examination. The board's Burdwan Regional Council Office covers Paschim Bardhaman, the district Durgapur belongs to.
The board's routine, notified on 13 July 2026, runs Madhyamik 2027 from 15 to 25 February, one subject a day. The first fifteen minutes from 10:45 are for reading the paper only, and most papers end at 2:00 pm. The board may change the schedule, so check its site before planning revision.
The board's 2026 calendar sets school from a 10:35 appointed hour to 4:30 in the afternoon, six days a week. A child in a day-shift school is free in the morning, so a home tutor can come before school. Evenings and Sundays also work; ask the school which shift your child is in.
Class 11 has Semesters I and II, and Class 12 has Semesters III and IV. Semesters I and III are multiple choice, normally in September, and II and IV are written, normally in March. The school conducts the Class 11 semesters, and the Council holds the Class 12 ones at examination centres.
No, the Council's FAQ says no calculator is allowed in any semester examination under its system, including Accountancy and the practicals. Students should practise arithmetic by hand from the start of Class 11, which matters most for those joining from IGCSE, where calculator use is routine.
A student needs 30 per cent in five subjects, two languages and any three electives, with theory and practical passed separately, and the five strongest subjects counted. A sixth subject is optional. The Council allows seven years from registration to pass, and it has not yet decided on an improvement test.
Yes, the Council lists CBSE, the CISCE, NIOS and Cambridge IGCSE among the boards it accepts for entry. The main adjustment is testing: one-mark semesters, no calculator and the Council's own approved books. A tutor can help a switching student settle in during the first months of Class 11.
State-board tutors travel across all five Durgapur zones. These run from the planned township of City Centre, A-Zone and B-Zone to Benachity and Bhiringi, Fuljhore and Palashdiha, Bidhannagar and Shankarpur, and Muchipara and Arra. Give the quarter number in the township, a map pin in older lanes, and the para name in Sagarbhanga.
