Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

English is compulsory for every board student in Aligarh, yet it is often the subject a family thinks about last. Many children here grow up speaking Hindi or Urdu at home and meet English mainly in the classroom, which shows up in thin literature answers, translated sentence order and a reluctance to speak. The fix is rarely more grammar worksheets. It is regular marked writing, close reading of the prescribed books and a little spoken English every lesson. Tell NXTutors the board, the class, the weak skill and the colony; a shortlist of two or three English tutors follows, every fee visible, and your first lesson costs nothing because it is a demo.
Aligarh students may sit English with the UP Board, CBSE, CISCE (ICSE and ISC), or an international course. The subject's name is the same; the paper is not.
| Board | Class 10 | Class 12 | Build lessons on |
|---|---|---|---|
| UP Board | 70-mark paper with 30 internal; literature 35, grammar 15, reading 10, writing 10 | One 100-mark paper; literature 40, grammar 25, writing 20, reading 15 | The NCERT readers, the board's model papers, Hindi-to-English translation |
| CBSE | Language and Literature: 80 in the board paper, 20 from school | English Core: 80 written; 20 for listening, speaking and a project | The NCERT books, plus CBSE's own sample questions and marking guides |
| CISCE | ICSE: separate language and literature papers of 80 marks, plus internal assessment | ISC: language and literature again, 80 marks each, with projects | The council's set texts and its specimen questions |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE First Language (0500) or Second Language (0510/0511) | IB Language A: unseen analysis, a comparative essay, an oral | Older papers for the exact entry or level chosen |
In its 2026-27 Class 10 English syllabus, the UP Board sets a 70-mark written paper with 30 internal marks. Literature is half the paper: 35 marks, of which First Flight carries 23 (15 for prose, 8 for poetry) and Footprints Without Feet carries 12. Grammar brings 15, and reading and writing 10 each.
The board's model paper gives three hours after a reading period: Part A is twenty one-mark multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet, and Part B is 50 marks of written answers. So literature answers deserve the largest share of lesson time, planned in points and tied to a line from the text; grammar is taught most usefully from your child's own mistakes; and the OMR block needs short timed practice. Our UP Board tutors in Aligarh page covers the board's other subjects.
Class 12 English on the UP Board is a single 100-mark paper, with no internal share. Literature from Flamingo and Vistas brings 40; grammar 25; writing 20; reading 15. In writing, the student produces an article of roughly 150 words plus one letter (to an editor, or a complaint or business letter), and the poetry questions can include figures of speech. The syllabus also mentions four unit tests held in school for remedial teaching, which do not count towards the result.
With nothing internal to cushion the paper, the tutor's strongest tool is timed writing: one article or letter a week, marked for format, content and language, and a list of figures of speech with an example of each from the prescribed poems.
Both UP Board English papers include translation from Hindi into English inside the grammar section: four sentences for 4 marks in Class 10, and seven or eight sentences for 5 marks in Class 12. These are marks a student can almost bank with practice, yet they are often left until the last week.
Ten minutes a lesson is enough: five short Hindi sentences in mixed tenses, translated, with each error labelled as tense, article, preposition, word order or vocabulary. Over a term, the labels show which grammar point needs a proper lesson. CBSE and ICSE students who think in Hindi or Urdu gain from the same drill.
The two NCERT books are shared with the UP Board, but CBSE's 2026-27 board paper of 80 weighs the skills differently. Literature from those books is worth 40. Reading is worth 20, built on one discursive passage and one factual passage that comes with a chart or set of figures. Writing is worth 10, split between a formal letter and an analytical paragraph describing a graph, map or chart. Grammar from the prescribed list brings the last 10. Inside school, 5 of the 20 internal marks go to listening and speaking.
So on both boards, literature is half the written paper, and a pair of marked literature answers each week tends to move the result more than extra grammar drills do.
When a child moves from Hindi-medium to English-medium schooling, new content and a new language arrive together. The tutor should begin bilingual and end in English: a short English text read daily with two new words noted; ready opening lines and linking phrases for letters and literature answers; short passages translated from Hindi or Urdu into English and back to expose tense and word-order slips; and an agreed date, often after the first term, from which lessons run wholly in English.
Yes, and marks benefit as well, because CBSE, ICSE and ISC all assess listening and speaking. A simple habit is to close every lesson with your child retelling the day's passage aloud for two minutes, then, over the weeks, moving to short prepared talks and quick questions from the tutor. Families who want fluent speech for its own sake, before an interview, a debate or a college presentation, should mention that when they write to us; it points us to a different kind of tutor. Ideas are in our spoken English guide for students.
For Classes 1 to 5, the goal is a child who reads willingly and accurately; exam skills can wait. Watch for a child who guesses a word from its first letter, loses the line, or hides from books. Little and often helps most: sounding out unfamiliar words, reading aloud with light correction, and telling the story back. If English is seldom heard at home, the tutor can chat in English about pictures and short stories and switch to Hindi or Urdu only when the child is truly stuck. Ask specifically for a tutor used to early readers.
In CBSE English Core, Class 11 reads Hornbill and Snapshots, with 31 marks for literature, 26 for reading and 23 for grammar and creative writing; in Class 12 the readers become Flamingo and Vistas, exactly as on the UP Board. ISC English has two papers: language, covering composition, directed writing and a proposal, and literature. With IGCSE, begin by checking whether the school entered First or Second Language; IB Language A centres on unseen analysis and an individual oral. Few local teachers handle these courses, so online lessons are often the realistic route; the national English home tutor guide covers each one.
Weekly lessons last longest when the tutor lives on the same side of Aligarh. Every locality is listed on the Aligarh home tuition page; six on the north and east side are below.
| Colony | Type of home | Arrange beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Civil Lines | Older family houses on wide lanes and newer apartment blocks near Jawahar Park | The lane or colony inside Civil Lines and a crossing that shows on a phone map; weekend mornings for longer sessions |
| Marris Road | Upper-floor flats and family houses with their own gate | Building, wing and floor for a flat; an after-dinner or early Sunday slot, since the road is busy by day |
| Dhaurra Mafi | Mostly family houses between Jamalpur and the Medical Road area | The exact spelling on your gate and the pocket name; a daylight slot in winter |
| ADA Colony | Family houses in a spacious colony just off Ramghat Road | House number and phase or block; short, regular sessions for young readers soon after school |
| Quarsi | An older settlement with newer colonies still being added | A phone map pin, plot or house number and the nearest chauraha |
| Janakpuri | Family housing on short lanes beside Surendra Nagar and Ramesh Vihar | Which side of Janakpuri, the lane or block, and whether a neighbouring colony is the easier way in |
The Civil Lines and Medical Road and Ramghat Road and Quarsi zone pages add landmarks and timing tips, and the Aligarh home tuition guide compares all five zones. From about Class 3, English can also be taught online if written work reaches the tutor before each lesson; see our online tutors for Aligarh.
Unhappy with the fit? Say so, and the next name on your shortlist gives a demo; moving to a different tutor later is free as well.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor quotes a personal rate, visible before the demo. Useful questions when comparing: whose English paper have you taught, will you mark writing between visits, and how many lessons a week do you advise? The Aligarh home tuition fees guide has more.
Write to us with the class and board, the skill to work on (reading, writing, grammar, translation, literature or speaking), the language your child is most relaxed in, your colony and a landmark, and the hours you can offer. UP Board Class 10 English is a 70-mark paper with 30 internal marks in 2026-27. Literature carries 35, with First Flight worth 23 and Footprints Without Feet 12; grammar carries 15, including a 4-mark Hindi-to-English translation; reading and writing carry 10 each. Part A is twenty one-mark questions on an OMR sheet.
Yes, both UP Board English papers include Hindi-to-English translation within grammar. Class 10 asks for four sentences worth 4 marks, and Class 12 for seven or eight sentences worth 5 marks. Ten minutes of translation practice each lesson, with every error labelled by type, is an easy way to protect these marks.
UP Board Class 12 English is a single 100-mark paper with no internal share: literature from Flamingo and Vistas 40, grammar 25, writing 20 and reading 15. Writing means an article of about 150 words and a letter to an editor, a complaint or a business letter, and poetry questions can include figures of speech.
CBSE Class 10 English uses the same two NCERT readers as the UP Board but a different 80-mark paper. Literature is 40, reading 20, writing 10 and grammar 10, with no translation. The school adds 20 internal marks, 5 of them for listening and speaking, so spoken practice counts towards the result.
Yes, an English tutor can start bilingual and move steadily to English. Daily short reading, ready sentence starters for letters and literature answers, and two-way translation from Hindi or Urdu show where tense and word order slip. Agree a date, often after the first term, from which lessons run fully in English.
In Quarsi, where newer colonies are still being added, share a phone map pin, the plot or house number and the nearest chauraha. In Janakpuri, say which side you live on, the lane or block, and whether neighbouring Surendra Nagar or Ramesh Vihar is the easier way in for the tutor.
Yes, English works well online from about Class 3, provided the tutor sees written work before each lesson. Photos of notebook pages or a shared file are enough. Early readers, children in their first months of English medium and speaking practice still gain more from a tutor at the same table.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
