Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Gangtok's schools teach mainly in English and Nepali, and many children move comfortably between the two in conversation. The board paper is less forgiving. It wants a formal letter in the right format, a literature answer that makes a point and supports it, a grammar item done without guessing, and, in the senior years, long compositions with a clear structure. Some children read widely but write thinly; others write accurately but freeze when asked to speak. So we begin by asking four things: the board, the class, the skill that is weakest, and your locality. You then receive two or three English tutors, each with a visible fee, and your first lesson costs nothing.
Schools in Gangtok follow CBSE or CISCE. The subject is called English on both, but the papers are built very differently, and a tutor should prepare for the one your child will actually sit.
| Board | Class 10 | Class 12 | Work from |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBSE | Language and Literature: a board paper of 80, plus 20 awarded by the school | English Core: a board paper of 80, plus 20 for listening, speaking and project work | The NCERT readers, this year's sample paper and its marking scheme |
| CISCE | ICSE: language and literature as two papers of 80 marks, with internal marks added | ISC: two papers of three hours and 80 marks, both carrying project work | Set texts and the specimen papers on cisce.org |
| Cambridge or IB (families who move in with them) | IGCSE as First Language (0500) or Second Language (0510) | IB Language A: unseen texts and an individual oral | School-supplied past papers; normally an online specialist |
The 2026-27 curriculum divides the board paper into four blocks, and knowing the split stops a tutor from spending every lesson on whichever chapter school is teaching that week.
Of the 20 school marks, 5 assess listening and speaking. In most weeks, two literature answers planned in advance and marked for relevance and length will lift the score more than one more grammar sheet.
ICSE splits the subject into two 80-mark papers, English Language and Literature in English, each with internal marks, so it is common to be strong in one and weak in the other. Ask the tutor to look at a marked school paper from each before deciding where to start. Language work rewards precise grammar, controlled composition and accurate comprehension; literature rewards close knowledge of the set texts and answers that quote or refer to them.
At ISC there are two papers of three hours each. The language paper includes a 400-to-450-word composition picked from six titles, a piece of directed writing and a proposal; literature is examined separately, and project work belongs to both. Our ICSE Class 10 English papers guide and the ISC English literature and language article go into each paper.
In Class 11, CBSE's English Core allots 26 marks to reading, 23 to grammar with creative writing, and 31 to literature drawn from Hornbill and Snapshots. Grammar disappears in Class 12 and literature grows, so a student who leaned on grammar marks should move effort to the set texts early. IGCSE families should first check which entry the school made, First Language or Second Language; IB students should expect unseen analysis and an individual oral of 15 minutes. Few cities have many specialists for these courses, so online lessons are the usual route; our national English home tutor page treats each course in detail.
The most common English problem we hear about is not grammar. It is an answer that is right but says too little. A tutor can fix it with a routine that takes only a small part of each session:
A child who thinks more freely in Nepali can plan in Nepali at first, as long as the answer itself is written in English from the beginning; ask for a tutor comfortable working this way if it would help.
Listening and speaking carry marks on CBSE, ICSE and ISC alike, so talk is part of exam preparation, not an extra. One simple routine: close every lesson with your child summarising the day's passage aloud, briefly, and over the term build up to short talks and answering questions on the spot. If the goal is interview-ready spoken English or plain confidence, mention it when you ask, since it affects which tutor fits. Read our spoken English guide for students for more.
For young children, the goal is fluent reading; exam skills can wait. A reluctant reader who guesses words needs little and often: decoding new words sound by sound, reading aloud while an adult quietly corrects, and telling the story back in their own words. A short, focused session does more than a long one at this age. Request a tutor who specialises in the primary years, and choose lessons at home rather than online.
There is no railway or metro in Gangtok, so tutors travel by shared taxi, two-wheeler or on foot, and the easiest match is often someone from your own side of the city. Our Gangtok page lists every locality.
| Locality | Kind of home | Settle beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Development Area | Flats in mid-rise concrete buildings among offices, banks and clinics | Building name, floor and whether the door is at road level; a fixed evening slot with margin |
| Arithang | Many rented flats in hillside buildings beside the centre | A roadside landmark; a tutor teaching in central Gangtok can add it the same evening |
| Deorali | Flats above shops on the highway, houses on lanes above and below | A landmark on the correct side of the busy junction; avoid the evening peak |
| Tathangchen | Houses with their own entrance and small residential buildings across the slope | The exact path or steps from the road; a backup online slot in heavy rain |
| Burtuk | Homes beside steep roads in a growing suburban ward | A tutor already teaching in Sichey or on the bypass; clear directions before the first class |
From around Class 3, English can be taught well on screen, provided the child's writing is photographed or typed into a shared file and sent ahead of the lesson. Lessons at home remain better for beginners in reading and for building spoken confidence. See the online tutor for Gangtok page, the zone page for Central Gangtok and Tibet Road, and the Gangtok home tuition guide.
If any answer is no, let us know; a demo with the next tutor on the list follows, and switching later is free.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor fixes a fee, shaped by the class and board, their record with that paper, the trip to your home at the agreed time, and how many lessons a week you book. Fees appear on your shortlist before any demo; the pricing guide and the Gangtok home tuition fees article explain more.
Let us know the class and board, the area of English that concerns you most, whether your child is more at ease in English or Nepali, your locality with a landmark, the times that suit and a budget. A shortlist of two or three English tutors with fees follows. Every tutor who joins completes an ID check before the profile is marked Verified. You can also browse tutor profiles or book a free demo class. For other subjects, see the Gangtok maths and science tutor pages. The 80-mark board paper gives 20 to reading, 10 to grammar, 10 to writing (a formal letter and an analytical paragraph) and 40 to literature from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking, so spoken practice counts as well.
Usually because the answers are too thin. A tutor can teach a short routine: plan three points, back each with a reference to the text and a comment, check the word limit, and rewrite one answer a week after feedback. Literature, worth half the CBSE paper, improves fastest.
Yes. At ICSE they are separate 80-mark papers with internal marks, so a child may need help with only one. Share a marked school paper from each at the demo, and the tutor can decide where the time should go first. Many students need far more help with one paper than the other.
Two three-hour papers of 80 marks, each with project work. The language paper includes a composition of 400 to 450 words chosen from six topics, directed writing and a proposal; literature is a separate paper on set texts. Planning a long composition under time is the key skill.
Ask for that in your request and we look for tutors who can. Gangtok schools mainly teach in English and Nepali. A sensible approach lets a child plan or discuss in Nepali at first, while every written answer is in English from the very first lesson.
From about Class 3 it works well if written work reaches the tutor before each lesson, as photos or a shared document. It also opens up ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists. Young readers and children building spoken confidence usually do better with a tutor at home.
