What home tuition costs in Gangtok

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

CBSE home tutors in Gangtok: steady board marks from Class 6 to Class 12

Gangtok's schools follow CBSE or CISCE, and for the many families on CBSE the year is shaped by NCERT books, school tests and, at Class 10 and Class 12, a national board paper. The 2026-27 session brings real changes: a new Class 9 Advanced option, the end of the Basic and Standard maths split, and two board exams in Class 10. Below you will find the board's expectations stage by stage, the way a home tutor should fit around school, the subjects Gangtok parents most often request, the routes tutors take into each zone, and the questions that test a CBSE tutor during the free demo. Abhinandan Tiwary contributes the Class 10 maths notes, and Aaditya Kashyap the science notes.

CBSE in Gangtok: what is the same everywhere, and what is local

CBSE schools in Sikkim come under the board's Regional Office in Guwahati, which also serves Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. The curriculum, sample papers and marking schemes are the same national documents used by every CBSE school, published on cbseacademic.nic.in, while circulars and exam notices appear on cbse.gov.in. A tutor in Gangtok should therefore be working from exactly the same current sample paper as a tutor anywhere else in the country; an old guidebook is not a substitute.

CISCE is Gangtok's other main board, examining ICSE in Class 10 and ISC in Class 12. Someone who has taught mostly ICSE knows the chapters well, yet may never have trained a student on CBSE-style competency items or shown how step-marks are earned; the same gap runs the other way. After a change of board, give the first few weeks to the new textbooks' wording and the way answers must be set out. The ICSE tutor guide describes that board's papers.

What CBSE expects at each stage

CBSE from Class 6 to Class 12 for a Gangtok child: who sets the exam, the usual sticking point, and what tuition should aim at
ClassExam set byUsual sticking pointWhat tuition aims at
6 to 8The schoolFractions and integers; understanding what a science paragraph actually saysSecure basics and the habit of showing every step
9The school, with a yearly paper of 80 and 20 internal marksBoth maths and science suddenly get broaderTests after each chapter, and choosing whether to sit Advanced
10The board sets 80; the school awards 20Applying ideas to unfamiliar questions; neat layoutThe current sample paper, checked with the official scheme
11The schoolA steep rise in physics, chemistry and mathsSolid foundations before the board year begins
12The board, plus practical or internal marksRevising everything while entrance plans pull the other wayA single plan that covers both goals

The pass mark in each Class 10 subject is 33%. Problems that seem to appear from nowhere in Class 9 usually trace back to shaky fractions or early algebra, so in these years a tutor earns their fee by mending gaps, not by running ahead of the school syllabus.

What changes in Classes 9 and 10 for 2026-27?

Class 9: one common paper, and an optional Advanced paper
All students write a common 80-mark paper in maths and another in science. In addition, a student can opt for an Advanced paper in maths, science, both or neither; it lasts one hour, carries 25 marks and asks only higher-order questions on additional content. These marks do not count in the aggregate, though 50% or above is recorded on the marksheet. Opt in only where your child is already at ease.
Maths: the end of Basic and Standard
The two-level maths scheme is being withdrawn; students in Class 10 in 2026-27 are the final batch to finish under it. For that batch, Standard is the safer choice if maths in Class 11 is on the cards.
Class 10: two board exams
The first sitting is compulsory for all. Anyone who passes it may take the second sitting to improve marks in as many as three subjects from science, maths, social science and the languages. Treat the first sitting as the real exam and plan for it.
Competency questions
Roughly half of every secondary paper tests competencies through cases, sources, data and real situations. In the transition years a third language is also compulsory; the school assesses it and there is no board paper.

For subject detail, see our Class 10 maths preparation guide, the Class 10 science notes, and the board-year plan that lays out the year month by month.

How are senior CBSE subjects marked?

CBSE Classes 11 and 12, 2026-27: the split between written paper and practical or internal marks
Subjects (codes)Written paperOther marks
Physics 042, Chemistry 043, Biology 0447030 practical
Mathematics 041 or Applied Mathematics 241 (a student takes one)8020 internal
Accountancy 055, Economics 030, Business Studies 0548020 internal

Class 12 is examined on the full Class 12 syllabus, and CBSE has signalled that senior questions will rely more on real-world use of ideas. Each year's design is confirmed when the sample paper comes out, which is why the tutor must teach from the latest one. Students also preparing for JEE or NEET gain from careful NCERT study for both goals, but long stretches of multiple-choice practice can erode written answers; insist on at least one complete, step-marked answer in every senior lesson. Our physics, chemistry and maths guides for Class 12 cover each paper.

How a CBSE tutor should work through the school term

A CBSE tutor's focus across the school term, for Classes 6 to 10
Point in the termTutor's focusWhat the parent sees
A new chapter at schoolThe NCERT section read together, then NCERT exemplar items and a case-based question built on itWorking in the notebook, not just ticked answers
Two weeks before a school testMixed questions from the test's chapters, timed, with errors listedA short list of topics still weak
The week after a testEvery lost mark worked again; the reason for each notedThe returned paper, corrected
End of each monthA one-page note: chapters done, scores, repeated mistakesThe note itself, kept with earlier ones

For most Class 9 and 10 students, two sessions of about an hour each week do more than one long weekend sitting, because problems are caught before they settle.

Which subjects, and which pages?

Until Class 10, most requests are for maths and science. After that, science-stream students tend to want physics, chemistry, maths or biology, and students whose written answers fall short often add English.

The national Class 10 maths and Class 10 science tutor pages and our Gurugram CBSE board guide explain the board in more depth.

How tutors reach each part of Gangtok

Gangtok has developed along its main roads, with homes climbing the slopes on either side. There is no railway or metro; tutors travel by shared taxi, two-wheeler or on foot. The city falls into four parts on our Gangtok page:

  • Central Gangtok and Tibet Road: in Tibet Road, homes sit above or behind shops in one of the densest parts of the city, so the tutor walks in from a taxi point. On Pani House, homes lie above and below the highway, often reached by steps; describe the route from the nearest stop.
  • Deorali, Tadong and Ranipool: the southern stretch of the highway where most new building is happening. In Deorali, give a landmark on the correct side of the busy junction and avoid the evening peak.
  • Syari, Chandmari and Tathangchen: mostly residential slopes on the eastern side. In Syari, share the block and quarter number in the housing colonies; a tutor who already lives there avoids the junction altogether.
  • Sichey, Burtuk and Bojoghari: wards along and below the bypass. In Bojoghari, look first at tutors from Chandmari, Tathangchen or Sichey.

The Gangtok home tuition guide covers every zone in more detail.

Home or online for CBSE in Gangtok?

A tutor at the table suits younger children, students whose attention slips on a screen, and any subject where every written line needs watching, from algebra and numericals to chemical equations and ledger formats. A screen suits a quick doubt-clearing session during test week, a senior subject whose most suitable tutor is on the other side of the city, and monsoon evenings when heavy rain makes the trip slow. Many families keep the same tutor for both; the online tutor for Gangtok page and our home versus online comparison set out the trade-offs.

Questions that test a CBSE tutor at the demo

  1. "Show me the sample paper you teach from." Look for the current session's paper from cbseacademic.nic.in.
  2. "Take my child through one case-based question." A good tutor teaches how to read the passage before solving anything.
  3. "Would an ICSE examiner want this answer written differently?" A telling question for tutors who teach both boards.
  4. "What changes in a school test week?" You want a specific adjustment, not simply more hours.
  5. "What report will I get?" A monthly note covering chapters, scores and recurring errors.

Every request brings a shortlist of two or three tutors with their fees shown up front; the first lesson is a free demo, and moving to a different tutor later is also free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified.

Fees and getting started

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Where a particular fee sits depends on the class, how many subjects are covered, the number of weekly sessions and how far the tutor travels to reach you; the pricing guide and our Gangtok home tuition fees article explain more.

Tell us the class, the subjects, your locality, how your home is reached from the road and the hours that suit, then request a free demo or browse tutor profiles. Teachers of CBSE subjects living in the city can look at tuition jobs in Gangtok.

CBSE Home Tutor in Gangtok (Classes 6–12): common questions

For a Gangtok child on CBSE, how is the tutor's hourly fee worked out?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. A CBSE tutor's fee depends on the class, the subjects covered, weekly sessions and the trip to your home, and every fee is shown before the demo.

How does a Gangtok family get a shortlist of CBSE tutors?

A Gangtok family gets a CBSE shortlist by sending the class, subjects, locality, how the home is reached from the road and suitable hours. We send two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and moving to a different tutor later is also free.

Which boards do Gangtok schools follow, and where does CBSE in Sikkim report?

Gangtok schools follow CBSE or CISCE, which runs ICSE at Class 10 and ISC at Class 12. CBSE schools in Sikkim come under the board's Regional Office in Guwahati. The syllabus, sample papers and marking schemes are the same national documents used everywhere, published on cbseacademic.nic.in.

Should a Gangtok Class 9 student opt for the CBSE Advanced paper?

A Gangtok Class 9 student should opt for the CBSE Advanced paper only in a subject where they are already at ease. It is an optional one-hour, 25-mark paper of higher-order questions in maths, science, both or neither. Its marks stay outside the aggregate, a score of 50% or more is noted on the marksheet, and the common 80-mark paper still applies.

If a Gangtok Class 10 student passes the first CBSE board sitting, what can the second one change?

For Gangtok students, the first CBSE Class 10 board exam is compulsory, and a student who passes may sit the second to improve up to three subjects. Those subjects can be science, maths, social science and the languages. Families should treat the first sitting as the real exam and plan the year around it.

What does the end of Basic and Standard maths mean for a Gangtok Class 10 student?

For a Gangtok Class 10 student, the end of Basic and Standard maths means the 2026-27 batch is the last to finish under the two-level scheme. For that batch, Standard is the safer choice if maths in Class 11 is on the cards. Later batches will no longer face the choice.

Out of 100, how much is theory and how much practical in Class 12 CBSE sciences for a Gangtok student?

For Gangtok students, CBSE Class 12 physics, chemistry and biology each have a 70-mark theory paper and 30 practical marks. Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, of which a student takes one, has 80 theory marks and 20 internal. A tutor should prepare the practical record and viva as well as the theory paper.

Can one tutor in Gangtok teach both CBSE and ICSE well?

Some tutors in Gangtok teach both CBSE and ICSE, but the papers reward different things. ICSE asks for a wider syllabus and fuller working, while CBSE leans on competency questions and step-marking. Ask at the demo how an answer would differ between the two, and choose someone who prepares for your child's board.

How do CBSE tutors get to homes above or below the road in Gangtok?

CBSE tutors get to Gangtok homes by shared taxi, two-wheeler or on foot, since the city has no railway or metro. Share the building name, the floor and whether the door is above or below the road. In colony housing, as in Syari, give the block and quarter number before the first class.

Is a home or online CBSE tutor more practical for a Gangtok child?

A home CBSE tutor is more practical for a younger Gangtok child, or anyone whose attention slips on a screen. It also suits algebra, numericals or chemical equations where every line needs watching. Online suits test-week doubt sessions, a senior subject whose tutor lives across the city, and monsoon evenings when heavy rain slows the trip.

How many sessions a week help a Gangtok CBSE student in Class 9 or 10?

For most Gangtok CBSE students in Class 9 or 10, two sessions of about an hour each week do more than one long weekend sitting. Problems are caught before they settle. A good tutor works mixed timed questions before school tests, reworks every lost mark afterwards and sends a one-page monthly note.
