Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

English tuition in Guwahati covers a wide span. A five-year-old may need help blending sounds into words; a Class 8 student may be moving from Assamese medium into an English-medium school; a Class 10 student may be sitting the state board, CBSE or ICSE; an older student may be on IGCSE or the IB and need a specialist who may not live nearby. Each needs a different tutor. NXTutors asks for the stage, the board, the language your child is most at ease in and your part of the city, then sends two or three English tutors with their fees. The first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo.
| Stage | Main goal | Sign it is working |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery to Class 2 | Letter sounds, blending and listening to stories read aloud | The child reads short books without guessing and retells them in order |
| Classes 3 to 5 | Fluent reading, spelling patterns and full written sentences | Independent reading of a chapter book; tidy short paragraphs |
| Classes 6 to 8 | Grammar inside the child's own writing; planned paragraphs | Fewer repeated errors; a plan before every written answer |
| Classes 9 and 10 | Board formats, timed reading, literature answers of the right length | The paper finishes on time, with formats correct |
| Classes 11 and 12 | Longer writing, critical reading and literature analysis | An argument held across several paragraphs with evidence |
For children in the first two rows, twenty to thirty minutes of focused work, several times a week, does more than a single long session, and a home tutor who can hear every word read aloud is usually the better choice.
Guwahati students study under the state board, CBSE and CISCE, and families following the IB or Cambridge IGCSE usually find their specialist online.
| Board | Class 10 | Classes 11 and 12 |
|---|---|---|
| Assam's state board | English set by the board; details in its official notices | English in the higher secondary course; details in its notices |
| CBSE | One paper of 80 (literature worth 40) plus 20 in school, 5 of them for listening and speaking | English Core: 80 in the paper and 20 for listening, speaking and a project |
| CISCE | ICSE: separate language and literature papers of 80 each | ISC: two three-hour papers of 80, each with 20 for project work |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE First Language (0500) or English as a Second Language (0510/0511) | IB Language A: language and literature, at SL or HL |
In CBSE Class 12, grammar leaves the paper and literature from Flamingo and Vistas rises to 40 marks, beside 22 for reading and 18 for creative writing. ICSE and ISC ask for more sustained writing than CBSE, so a CISCE student gains most from timed compositions marked promptly; our ICSE Class 10 English notes go question by question.
Assam's Class 10 examination was long conducted by SEBA, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam, while AHSEC, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, ran the Class 11 and 12 course. The two have since been combined into a single state school education board, so newer notices may use that name. Our notes on its English papers stay general. What matters in a tutor is familiarity with the prescribed English textbooks, awareness of the medium the school teaches in, and the habit of checking syllabus, timetable and pattern in the board's own notices each year.
A student who has studied in Assamese and joins an English-medium class, or switches to CBSE or ICSE, usually understands more than they can produce. The tutor's first job is to make English feel usable, not to correct every line. A sensible order:
Mention Assamese in your request if you want a tutor who can explain in it during the first months.
The school makes the entry, but the preparation depends on it, so confirm which course your child is on before a tutor starts. From Cambridge's syllabuses for 2027 to 2029:
| First Language English (0500) | English as a Second Language (0510 or 0511) | |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Paper 1, two hours, 80 marks, half the grade | Combined with writing in one two-hour paper, 70% of the grade |
| Writing | Directed Writing and Composition paper, or a coursework portfolio | Part of the Reading and Writing paper |
| Listening | Only in the optional speaking and listening component | A listening paper of about 50 minutes, 30% of the grade |
| Speaking | Optional, reported separately | 10 to 15 minutes; reported separately on 0510, counted on 0511 |
A First Language tutor spends time on how writers create effects and on extended composition; a Second Language tutor spends it on accurate understanding and clear writing for a purpose.
IB Language A: Language and Literature has an unseen analysis of non-literary texts (Paper 1), a comparative essay on two literary works studied in class (Paper 2) and a 15-minute individual oral. At HL there is also an essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words. The weightings are 35%, 35% and 30% at SL, and 35%, 25%, 20% and 20% at HL. A tutor can rehearse the oral and discuss essay plans, but coursework must be the student's own. The national English home tutor guide covers these courses in more depth.
Guwahati stretches along the Brahmaputra from the old bazaars to the far south and the western corridor, and each stretch draws on a different set of tutors. The Guwahati home tuition page lists every locality.
| Locality | Homes | Getting there | Tell the tutor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pan Bazar | Flats above or behind shops, older houses in lanes | Close to the main railway station and the bus terminal | A lane landmark and the floor number |
| Uzan Bazar | One of the oldest settlements, with older houses | Within the old core, easy by public transport | An early morning, later evening or weekend slot |
| Chandmari | Older houses, builder floors and apartments | East of the old centre, towards Zoo Road | A fixed weekday slot that avoids the coaching batch |
| Ganeshguri | Mostly two- and three-bedroom flats | Buses from every direction pass through | Building name, flat number and a guard's phone number |
| Beltola | Apartments, complexes and older houses | By city bus or auto along GS Road | Keep lessons off Beltola Bazar market days |
| Maligaon | Apartment buildings with gates | Kamakhya Junction, or a city bus to Adabari Tiniali | The easier way in and a precise pick-up point |
The zone guides for the Old City and Riverfront, Chandmari and Zoo Road and Beltola and Khanapara give more detail, and our Guwahati tuition guide covers the whole city.
For young readers and students in the first months of a change of medium, home lessons are the better choice. From about Class 3 upwards, online works well if written work reaches the tutor as notebook photos or in a shared document before each class, and it is often the only way to reach an ICSE literature, IGCSE or IB specialist. Guwahati's shape adds practical reasons: a North Guwahati family needs a tutor who already lives on the north bank, or an online one, since a daily river crossing is hard to sustain; and in the old city the market hours around the station can swallow a lesson. Pairing a nearby home tutor with online sessions for the specialist paper is often the practical answer. Our article on home or online tutoring weighs the two.
If the fit is wrong, tell us. We arrange a demo with the next shortlisted tutor, and a later switch is free.

Yes. We look for tutors who teach from the prescribed English textbooks, know the school's medium of instruction and follow the state board's own notices. SEBA and AHSEC have been combined into a single state school education board, so check the latest notices. Our notes on those papers stay general.
Yes. A good tutor starts with reading aloud together, lets the student say an answer before writing it, fixes one grammar pattern a week from the student's own mistakes, and builds up to longer writing. Mention Assamese in your request if you want a tutor who can explain in it.
Yes. Children up to about Class 2 need work on letter sounds and blending, plenty of stories read aloud, and short sessions of twenty to thirty minutes several times a week. A home tutor is the stronger choice at this age, because they can hear every word and keep the child engaged with real books.
First Language English (0500) rewards analysis of how writers use language and extended composition, with a reading paper worth half the grade. English as a Second Language (0510 or 0511) tests reading, writing and listening for learners of English. The school decides the entry, so confirm it first.
We match across the Old City and Riverfront, Chandmari and Zoo Road, GS Road and Dispur, Beltola and Khanapara, and Maligaon, Jalukbari and North Guwahati. North bank homes are matched with a tutor already living there where possible, and where no one suitable can reach you, we suggest online lessons.
From about Class 3 upwards it usually works, provided written work reaches the tutor before each class through notebook photos or a shared document. It is often the easiest way to reach ICSE literature, IGCSE and IB specialists. Young readers and students changing medium do better with a home tutor.
