Home Tuition in Guwahati: A Guide to All Five Zones
Guwahati stretches along the south bank of the Brahmaputra and then runs south between the hills towards Meghalaya. The old bazaars cluster around the main railway station, GS Road carries the city down through Ganeshguri and the capital at Dispur to Beltola and Khanapara, the railway town of Maligaon and the Jalukbari junction guard the west, and North Guwahati waits across the river. No metro runs here yet, only a proposed one, so buses, autos and two-wheelers decide which tutors can reach a home and at what hour.
This guide covers all five NXTutors zones in Guwahati and every locality with its own page. For each one it notes the kind of homes a tutor visits, the usual way in, and when a weekly class is easiest to keep.
Which zone is your home in?
| Zone | Localities | Typical homes | Tutors usually come from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old City & Riverfront | Pan Bazar, Paltan Bazaar, Uzan Bazar, Ulubari | Flats above shops, older houses, low-rise apartments | Anywhere, by bus or train to the station |
| Chandmari & Zoo Road | Chandmari, Zoo Road, Lachit Nagar, Bhangagarh | Houses, builder floors, multistorey apartments | The Zoo Road and GS Road side |
| GS Road & Dispur | Ganeshguri, Dispur, Rukminigaon, Hatigaon, Kahilipara | Apartment buildings, some houses and villas | The centre and the south, via Ganeshguri |
| Beltola & Khanapara | Beltola, Survey, Six Mile, Khanapara, Basistha | Apartments, large complexes, houses and plots | The south, along GS Road and the highway |
| Maligaon, Jalukbari & North Guwahati | Maligaon, Adabari, Jalukbari, North Guwahati | Apartments on the south bank; houses and plots across the river | The western corridor, or the north bank itself |
Old City & Riverfront
The old core is a chain of bazaars, each with its own trade, and it is the easiest part of the city to reach by public transport. The price of that is crowding in working hours.
- Pan Bazar: bookshops, printing presses and the wholesale medicine trade, with the Dighalipukhuri tank and Kachari Ghat nearby. Homes are flats above or behind shops and older houses in the lanes; give the floor and a lane landmark.
- Paltan Bazaar: Guwahati railway station and the state transport bus terminal. The settled lanes lie towards Rehabari and Ulubari; for a first visit, agree a pick-up point.
- Uzan Bazar: one of the oldest settlements, beside the river, with the Rajbari compound and a riverfront park. Houses mean the door, apartment buildings a gate; afternoon or early evening slots avoid the riverside crowd.
- Ulubari: where GS Road starts south under its flyover, with low-rise and mid-rise apartments. Stadium event days and the GS Road evening peak are the times to avoid.
Chandmari & Zoo Road
East of the centre, this belt of schools, coaching classes and rented flats has a student feel. Home lessons here compete with evening coaching, so a fixed slot agreed in advance matters more than anywhere else.
- Chandmari: one of the oldest localities, with the city's radio centre and a playground that has held Bohag Bihu every year since 1961. Older houses and apartment buildings sit in pockets such as Milanpur, Bamunimaidam and Bhaskar Nagar.
- Zoo Road: the road from Chandmari to Ganeshguri past the state zoo, lined with multistorey apartments that keep visitor registers. Book a class that starts after the evening rush.
- Lachit Nagar: builder floors and small apartment buildings between GS Road and Zoo Tiniali, linked to Chandmari by Rajgarh Road. Lanes are narrow, so say where a two-wheeler can park.
- Bhangagarh: a busy market locality on GS Road with a large health-care district. Share the building name, floor and a gate contact, and keep clear of peak hours.
GS Road & Dispur
Dispur has been the capital of Assam since 1973, and the localities around its capital complex grew into the city's southern sub-centre. Buses from every direction pass through Ganeshguri, which gives families here a wide pool of tutors.
- Ganeshguri: the commercial heart of the south, where Zoo Road ends. Residential lanes behind the shops hold flats, builder floors and houses; time classes around the junction's rush.
- Dispur: the Secretariat and Legislative Assembly, with GS Road and the Assam Trunk Road passing through. Avoid office opening and closing times; apartment gates ask for the flat number.
- Rukminigaon: multistorey apartments a short walk off GS Road, so a tutor on the bus has an easy last stretch. Mention parking if the tutor drives.
- Hatigaon: once home to the Beltola rulers' elephants, now two- and three-bedroom flats with houses in the back lanes. Most buildings sign visitors in.
- Kahilipara: state education department offices and other government compounds beside houses, flats and some villas. Evening or weekend slots dodge office traffic.
Beltola & Khanapara
The far south has grown quickly since the 1980s and now reaches the national highway. Homes range from large complexes to traditional houses and plots, and most tutors arrive along GS Road or the highway.
- Beltola: a former small kingdom with a twice-weekly market, Beltola Bazar, that still meets in the middle of the locality. Keep class times clear of market hours if you live nearby.
- Survey: often called Survey Beltola, with lanes such as Ajanta Path off the main road. Mostly apartments; fix a weekday slot before the evening build-up.
- Six Mile: on GS Road, with its flyover to the highway and Narangi station as an alternative to Guwahati railway station. Buildings keep visitor registers.
- Khanapara: a regional transport hub towards Meghalaya, with an indoor stadium and a science centre. Plan around regional traffic on the main road.
- Basistha: the southern edge, beside the Garbhanga forest and the Basistha temple. Large complexes need a tower and flat number; lanes off the road need a clear landmark.
Maligaon, Jalukbari & North Guwahati
The western corridor is the city's main rail and road link out, and the river divides this zone in two. South-bank homes can draw on tutors from along the corridor; north-bank homes are usually better served by a local tutor or an online one.
- Maligaon: headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway and home to Kamakhya Junction, below the Nilachal hill. Durga Puja here is a week to plan around.
- Adabari: built around Adabari Tiniali and a bus depot for lower Assam. Agree a precise pick-up point, as the junction is busy all day.
- Jalukbari: where the corridor splits for the airport and the Saraighat bridges, with a large student population and multistorey apartments. Plan around the highway peak.
- North Guwahati: across the river, being drawn into the city limits, with houses and plots spread out. The six-lane bridge to North Guwahati opened in February 2026, but a tutor from the north bank, or online classes for specialist subjects, still suits a weekly routine better.
Boards and timing across Guwahati
Families here follow the state board, long known as SEBA for Class 10 and AHSEC for Classes 11 and 12 and since merged into one state school education board, alongside CBSE and ICSE or ISC, with IB and IGCSE students often taught online. Match the tutor to the board first. Across the year, Bohag Bihu in April and Durga Puja in the autumn interrupt routines, and wet monsoon evenings are a good reason to agree an online fallback. Frequently asked questions
How do home tutors get around Guwahati without a metro?
By city bus, auto, two-wheeler or car, and sometimes by train. A Guwahati Metro has been proposed but none is running, so GS Road buses, Guwahati railway station and Kamakhya Junction carry most tutors. A tutor from your own zone is the easiest to keep for a full school year.
Which parts of Guwahati have the most independent houses?
North Guwahati, the older lanes of Uzan Bazar and Chandmari, and the quieter lanes of Beltola, Kahilipara and Basistha. Houses usually mean the tutor comes straight to the door, while the apartment buildings that dominate GS Road, Zoo Road and Dispur ask for a name at the gate.
Can a tutor from the south bank teach in North Guwahati?
It is possible, since three bridges now cross the river, but the ride is long for a weekly class. Most north-bank families do better with a tutor who lives on that side, plus online lessons for specialist subjects. NXTutors looks for nearby tutors first, then widens the search.
Which weeks of the year disrupt home tuition in Guwahati?
Bohag Bihu in April, with celebrations such as the one at the Chandmari playground, and Durga Puja in the autumn, which is especially lively in Maligaon. Market days at Beltola Bazar and stadium events in Ulubari affect nearby roads too. Moving those classes online keeps the routine going.
What if no specialist tutor lives near our locality?
NXTutors widens the search from your locality to your zone, then the rest of Guwahati, then online tutors across India. You still receive two or three matched tutors with fees shown up front, and the first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo.
