Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

For many families in Tiruchirappalli, English is the subject that is examined in one language and thought about in another. A child may follow every lesson and still write a three-line literature answer, lose easy marks on the layout of a letter, or go quiet when asked to speak. Others are confident talkers whose written English needs discipline. The right tutor depends on which of these describes your child, on the board, and on where you live. Tell NXTutors those three things and we come back with two or three English tutors, fees listed, and the first class with the one you choose is a free demo.
| What parents tell us | What it usually means | The tutor to look for |
|---|---|---|
| "Understands the chapter but writes very little" | Ideas are there; sentence-building in English is slow | Someone who models answers and has the child rewrite them |
| "Loses marks on letters and paragraphs" | Formats and word limits are not secure | A board-paper specialist who marks against the scheme |
| "Reads slowly or avoids reading" | Decoding or vocabulary gaps, often from the early years | A tutor used to teaching young readers |
| "Will not speak in English" | Low confidence rather than low knowledge | A patient tutor who builds short spoken tasks into every lesson |
| "Moving to an English-medium school" | A whole-curriculum language shift | A tutor comfortable explaining in Tamil at first, then stepping back |
The national English home tutor page explains the four skills every board tests and how we judge tutors in general.
The SSLC and Higher Secondary examinations are conducted by the Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu, which has a regional office in Tiruchirappalli. Its timetable places English as Part II at both levels, between the Part I language and the Part III subjects, and lists Communicative English as a separate Part III subject at Higher Secondary level. The Directorate sets and revises the English papers, so we keep our description general; formats and schedules should be taken from dge.tn.gov.in.
For a State Board student, a good tutor teaches from the prescribed English textbook, practises with model or previous papers where the Directorate releases them, and uses Tamil to unlock a difficult idea while keeping every written answer in English. The Tamil Nadu Board tutor page for Tiruchirappalli covers the board across subjects.
| Section | Marks | Weekly habit |
|---|---|---|
| Literature, from First Flight and Footprints without Feet | 40 | Two full answers written and marked for relevance and length |
| Reading: a discursive passage and a case-based factual passage with a chart or data | 20 | One unseen passage under time |
| Grammar | 10 | Fix one type of error from the child's own writing |
| Writing: a formal letter (5) and an analytical paragraph on a chart, map or graph (5) | 10 | One piece every fortnight, layout checked first |
The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking, which a short spoken summary at the end of each lesson supports. Literature is where most marks slip: a child who can retell a story easily in Tamil may write thin English answers. Steady marking of complete literature answers usually helps more than extra grammar worksheets.
For the examination year 2028, CISCE sets English Language and Literature in English as two papers of 80 marks each, each with 20 marks of internal assessment. The language paper covers a composition, a letter, a notice with an e-mail, an unseen passage with a summary, and functional grammar; its internal marks are split between listening and speaking, 10 each. A tutor for ICSE should therefore be at ease with both creative and functional writing, and should treat the set literature texts with the close reading CISCE expects. ICSE English tutors are fewer in the city than CBSE or State Board ones, so mention the board at the start.
The goal is to use Tamil as a support at first and then remove it in stages. Methods that work well:
Usually, yes, and the two aims help each other, since CBSE, ICSE and ISC all award marks for listening and speaking. A natural sequence is a short oral summary of the day's reading, then brief talks on familiar topics, then interview-style questions for older students. If speaking confidence for interviews or college matters to you as much as board marks, say so in your request, because it changes the shortlist. Our spoken English guide for students has practical ideas.
Below Class 6 the aim is fluent, willing reading rather than exam technique. Warning signs include guessing words from their first letter, losing the line, and reluctance to pick up a book. Short, frequent practice works: sounding out new words, reading a page aloud to an adult who listens patiently, and retelling the story in the child's own words. If English is not spoken much at home, choose a tutor who talks about pictures and simple stories in English and turns to Tamil only when the child is stuck, and ask for someone experienced with young learners.
In CBSE English Core, Class 11 gives 26 marks to reading, 23 to grammar and creative writing and 31 to literature from Hornbill and Snapshots; Class 12 gives 22 to reading, 18 to creative writing and 40 to literature, with 20 internal marks for listening, speaking and a project in both years. ISC English asks for a composition chosen from six topics, directed writing and a proposal, with literature examined in a separate paper. For IGCSE, confirm whether the entry is First Language or Second Language; for the IB, expect unseen-text analysis and an individual oral. Specialists for ISC, IGCSE and IB are fewer in Tiruchirappalli, so an online tutor is often the practical route.
Tutors here mostly travel by two-wheeler, city bus or auto, so one who lives on your side of the city tends to keep a weekly slot most reliably. All localities are on our Tiruchirappalli page.
In Thiruvanaikaval, most families live in independent houses, so the tutor parks on the street and comes to the door; Srirangam station is the nearest. Parents with several children often find one after-school slot at home works for all of them. Manachanallur, north of the Kollidam, is usually reached by bus or two-wheeler, and weekend lessons can suit students who travel to school.
Thillai Nagar pairs a busy commercial road with quieter residential cross streets; name the cross street so the tutor avoids the evening shopping crowd. In Tennur, offices and shops bring daytime traffic, so a late-afternoon or early-evening lesson is easier to keep.
KK Nagar has its own bus stand with several city routes; give a landmark, since the layouts are spread out. Edamalaipatti Pudur lies on Madurai Main Road, so an evening after the rush or a weekend morning works better than school-closing time.
The Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur and Tennur zone page and our Tiruchirappalli home tuition guide carry more local tips.
Online English works for most children from around Class 3, as long as the tutor sees written work before each lesson through a photo of the notebook or a shared document. It is also how a specialist for ISC, IGCSE or IB can teach a student anywhere in the city. Lessons at home remain the stronger option for beginning readers, for the first months of a shift into English-medium study, and for shy speakers who need someone in the room. Many families mix the two: one visit and one online session each week.
At the free demo, notice whether the tutor asks to see a marked school answer first, whether your child writes or speaks something during the class, and whether you leave knowing what will be checked next week. If the fit is wrong, tell us; the next tutor on the list gives a demo, and switching later is free. The demo class checklist for parents has more.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor decides their own fee, which depends on the class and board, their experience with that paper, the journey at the hour you want and how many lessons you book in a week. Every fee is on the shortlist before the demo; our Tiruchirappalli home tuition fees article has more.
Share the class and board, the skill that worries you most, the language your child is most comfortable in, your neighbourhood with a landmark, the days that work and a rough budget. Two or three suitable English tutors come back with their fees, and you choose one for a free demo class. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID, as set out on how we check tutors. If nobody suitable can reach you at that hour, we suggest online lessons or a mix. For other subjects, see our maths and science pages for Tiruchirappalli. English teachers who live in the city can find open requests on Tiruchirappalli tuition jobs.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each Trichy tutor sets a personal fee, and you see every fee on the shortlist before the demo.
Yes. We look for tutors who teach from the prescribed English textbook, practise with official papers where the Directorate of Government Examinations releases them, and can explain in Tamil while every answer stays in English. English is Part II of the SSLC and Higher Secondary; check current formats on dge.tn.gov.in.
The board paper is out of 80: literature 40, reading 20, grammar 10, and writing 10 through a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. The school adds 20 internal marks, 5 of them for listening and speaking. Complete, relevant literature answers within the word limit decide much of the final score.
For the 2028 examination year it has a composition, a letter, a notice with an e-mail, an unseen passage with a summary, and functional grammar, for 80 marks. Internal assessment adds 20, split equally between listening and speaking. Literature in English is examined in a separate 80-mark paper.
Yes. Good tutors use Tamil as a support at first, then step back: model answers that the child rewrites, an error diary reviewed every lesson, paragraphs read aloud and summarised in English, and an agreed point after which lessons run only in English. Tell us which language your child reads most easily.
Usually. In Thillai Nagar, name the residential cross street so the tutor avoids the commercial road, which fills with shoppers in the evening. In Tennur, offices and shops make the daytime busy, so a late-afternoon or early-evening lesson is easier to keep, especially in apartment buildings with a gate.
For most children from about Class 3, yes, provided written work reaches the tutor before each lesson through notebook photos or a shared document. Online lessons also open up ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists. Beginning readers and children just moving into English-medium study usually do better with a tutor at home.
