Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

In Cuttack, English means different things in different homes. A child in an Odia-medium school under the state board may read English well enough yet freeze when asked to write a paragraph of their own. A child in a CBSE or ICSE school may write fluently but lose marks on literature answers that stay too thin. A senior student may want the confidence to speak in an interview or a presentation. So we ask first about the board, the class and the skill that worries you, then send two or three English tutors who fit your child and can reach your locality, with each fee on the list. The first class is a free demo.
One subject name hides several quite different papers.
| Board | Class 10 | Class 12 | Work from |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSE Odisha; CHSE Odisha | Part of the Annual HSC examination; the board publishes the Class 9 and 10 textbooks | Set within the council's +2 syllabus for Arts, Science and Commerce | The board's own books and the current syllabus files on each body's site |
| CBSE | Language and Literature: a board paper of 80, plus 20 awarded by the school | English Core: 80 written, with 20 for listening, speaking and a project | NCERT readers, plus the board's own sample papers with their marking schemes |
| CISCE | ICSE: a language paper and a literature paper, 80 marks each, plus internal assessment | ISC: the same two-paper shape at 80 each, with project work alongside | Set texts and CISCE specimen papers |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE: First Language English (0500) or English as a Second Language (0510 or 0511) | IB Language A: unseen analysis, a comparative essay and an individual oral | Past papers, and the exact entry the school has chosen |
The Board of Secondary Education, Odisha, whose main office is in Cuttack, holds the Annual HSC Examination at the end of Class 10 and publishes the textbooks for Classes 9 and 10. After that, the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha sets the +2 syllabus, conducts the exam and publishes the results. Neither body's English paper layout could be confirmed from its website, so we describe none here; the current files sit on bseodisha.ac.in and chseodisha.nic.in.
The tutor's job is still clear. Work from the board's prescribed book line by line, so a literature answer can quote and explain the text rather than retell it. Build a small set of writing formats, such as a letter, an application and a paragraph, and then practise fresh content in them each week. And for a child who thinks in Odia, check that answers are written as whole English sentences, not translated word by word. Our Odisha board tutors in Cuttack page covers the boards' other subjects.
Under the 2026-27 curriculum, the Language and Literature paper divides its marks like this, and a weekly habit attaches naturally to each part:
Of the 20 marks the school awards, 5 are for listening and speaking. With literature making up half the written paper, two marked literature answers a week usually do more good than another grammar worksheet.
Some Cuttack children change from an Odia-medium school to an English-medium one, often at Class 6, Class 9 or after Class 10. Overnight, every subject arrives in a language they are still learning. A good tutor begins in both languages and moves, on a plan, towards English alone:
Sometimes the need runs the other way, and an English-medium child wants help with Odia as a second language. Mention it, because it changes which tutor we suggest.
Yes, and the board papers reward it: CBSE, ICSE and ISC each set aside marks for listening and speaking. Lessons can close with your child retelling the day's passage aloud, growing over the months into short talks and rounds of questions. If speaking is a goal in itself, for an interview, a group discussion or a class presentation, put that in your request. Our guide to spoken English for students has practical ideas.
In the primary years the goal is a child who reads easily, not one who knows exam tricks. Watch for guessing a word from how it starts, a finger that loses its place, or a child who quietly avoids books. Little and often works better than a long weekend session: breaking new words into sounds, reading out loud with kind correction, and telling the story back afterwards. In homes where English is seldom spoken, a tutor can chat in English about pictures and simple tales and use Odia only as a rescue. Request a tutor who is used to primary children.
CBSE's English Core marks Class 11 as reading 26, grammar and creative writing 23 and literature 31, with Hornbill and Snapshots as the readers, and Class 12 switches to Flamingo and Vistas. ISC splits the subject into two papers: language (composition, directed writing and a proposal) and literature. For IGCSE, find out first whether the school has entered your child for first-language or second-language English; for IB Language A, the work centres on analysing unseen texts and preparing the individual oral. CHSE students should work from the council's current syllabus for their stream. The national English home tutor guide explains each course.
A tutor from your own side of the city is usually the steadiest choice. The Cuttack home tuition page lists every locality.
| Locality | Where it sits | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Chandni Chowk | A central old-city neighbourhood with Ramgarh, Dagarpada and Mangala Sahi around it; language help is a common request here | The sahi name and lane; say which medium your child studies in and how comfortably they read Odia |
| Bidanasi | The city's western end near the Mahanadi, with Tareni, Laxmi, Jyoti and Satabdi Vihar in the same ward | The vihar first, then lane and chhak; a slot that leaves your child time to settle after school |
| CDA Sector 6 | A grid-planned CDA sector, with Satichoura and Krushak Bazar nearby; the primary years are a frequent reason families here look for help | Sector, block or plot and lane; two or three short visits a week at the same hour |
| Tulasipur | The western old city across three wards, with colonies such as Revenue Colony and Sambadik Colony | The colony as well as the lane; if two children need help, ask about teaching both in one visit |
| Choudhury Bazar | The heart of the old city, with Nandi Sahi, Jhola Sahi, Hati Pokhari and Kathagada Sahi nearby | Where a two-wheeler can stand; a small notebook so parents can follow each day's work |
| Rajabagicha | The old city's southern edge towards the Kathajodi; Arts students in Classes 11 and 12 often ask for help here | Which side of Rajabagicha you live on; one marked long answer each week |
The western old city and CDA and Bidanasi zone pages say more about each side of the city, and the Cuttack home tuition guide compares every zone.
From roughly Class 3, English travels well over a video call, provided the tutor gets the written work in advance through photos of the notebook or a shared document. Going online also opens the door to ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists. Sitting together matters more for beginners learning to read, for a child fresh out of Odia medium, and for practice in speaking. When the tutor you like lives far from you, one visit and one video lesson a week is a fair compromise; our online tutors for Cuttack page describes how the online classes work.
Unhappy with the fit? Say so, and a different tutor from the shortlist gives a demo; switching later is also free.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor chooses a fee. Worth asking every tutor: which board's English have you taught lately, how will you mark writing done between visits, and how many lessons a week do you recommend? Fees are on the shortlist before any demo, and the Cuttack home tuition fees guide goes into more detail.
Let us know the class, the board, which skill concerns you most (reading, writing, grammar, literature or speaking), whether your child is happier in Odia or English, the locality with its lane and chhak, and when your child is free. Two or three suitable English tutors come back with their fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete (how the ID check works). Other Cuttack pages cover maths and science; in the capital, compare English tutors in Bhubaneswar. If you teach English and live in Cuttack, see the requests on Cuttack tuition jobs.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. English tutors in Cuttack set their own fees. Ask which board's English paper each has taught, how writing will be marked between visits, and how many lessons a week they suggest.
Send the class, the board and the skill that worries you most. Add whether your child is more at ease in Odia or English, your locality with a lane and chhak, and free times. We reply with two or three English tutors and their fees, and one gives a free demo before you decide.
An English tutor in Cuttack should work from the board's prescribed book so literature answers quote and explain the text. A few writing formats, such as a letter and a paragraph, should be fixed early and then practised weekly. For a child who thinks in Odia, answers must be whole English sentences, not word-by-word translation.
The 80 CBSE Class 10 English board marks are divided into reading 20, grammar 10, writing 10 and literature 40. Writing means a formal letter and an analytical paragraph, 5 marks each. The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking, so Cuttack students should practise speaking too.
A Cuttack child can move from Odia medium to English medium smoothly with a tutor who starts in both languages and shifts to English on a plan. Two-way translation, daily reading with a short summary, ready opening lines for answers, and an agreed date for English-only lessons make the change manageable.
An English home tutor in Cuttack can also teach spoken English, and board papers reward it, because CBSE, ICSE and ISC give marks for listening and speaking. Lessons can end with a spoken retelling and build towards short talks. Mention interviews or presentations in your request so we suggest a suitable tutor.
A Class 1 to 5 child in Cuttack mainly needs fluent, confident reading rather than exam practice. Short sessions on several days a week work well: sounding out new words, reading aloud with gentle correction and retelling the story. Where English is rarely spoken at home, the tutor can use Odia only when the child is stuck.
ISC English for Class 12 is split into a language paper and a literature paper. The language paper covers composition, directed writing and a proposal, while the literature paper tests the prescribed texts. Cuttack students on ISC should practise both, with project work alongside, and work from CISCE specimen papers.
Families in Chandni Chowk should give the sahi name and lane, and say which medium their child studies in and how comfortably the child reads Odia. In Rajabagicha, say which side you live on, since the name covers several streets. Arts students there gain from one marked long answer each week.
Online English tuition is a good option for most Cuttack students from about Class 3 onwards. It works when the tutor sees written work beforehand through notebook photos or a shared file. It also brings ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists within reach. Early readers and children just leaving Odia medium gain more from home lessons.
