Odisha Board tutors in Cuttack: the BSE year in Class 10, the CHSE course in the +2 years

Cuttack is where the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha keeps its main office; its notices are now signed from "Kataka", the city's restored spelling. For a family here, the "Odisha Board" means two bodies in turn. BSE Odisha runs the Class 9 and Class 10 years and the Annual HSC examination at the end of Class 10. The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha, which works from Bhubaneswar, then takes over for Classes 11 and 12 with its own syllabus and papers. A tutor who serves state-board students well knows the calendar each body sets, the shape of its papers and where its free material sits. Every term, mark and paper detail below was taken from the two bodies' own websites this October. Open them again in your child's examination year, since changes are announced there.

On its About page the council describes itself as autonomous, working under the state's school education department, with the +2 syllabus, examinations, results and affiliation as its tasks. BSE's notice list also carries teacher tests and scholarships, so search it for "HSC" to find what concerns your child.

The Class 10 calendar printed in the 2026–27 syllabus

BSE's subject-wise syllabus for 2026–27 is more than a chapter list. For each subject it divides the year into two terms and says by when each assessment is meant to be finished. The English and mathematics files plan it like this:

BSE Odisha Class 10 assessments, session 2026–27, as planned in the board's syllabus file
TermAssessmentMarksPlanned for
IInternal assessment IA-110By the second week of July 2026
IIA-2 and the first aspirational component10 and 20By the last week of August 2026
IHalf-yearly examination100By the first week of September 2026
IIIA-310By the first week of November 2026
IIIA-4 and the second aspirational component10 and 20By the first week of January 2027
IIAnnual examination, after a revision block that starts in the second week of January100By the last week of February 2027

Because each assessment names its chapters, a tutor can plan backwards from it. In the board's own uploads, the internal assessment and aspirational component appear as "I.A. and A.C." marks, which schools send to the board ahead of the annual examination. How they combine with the written papers on the certificate is the board's decision, so ask the school for the current rule. If the two ever differ, follow the board's file.

What the board's notices tell you about the HSC paper

  • An objective part in four sets. The scoring keys for the 2026 Annual HSC examination list answers for 50 objective questions in each subject, including mathematics, general science and social science, printed for sets A, B, C and D. Neighbouring candidates are unlikely to share a set, so practise answering alone and at speed.
  • A written part as well. When results are out, candidates may apply to have the totals in both their objective and subjective answer books rechecked, and may ask for scanned copies of those books.
  • Past papers. A download link on the home page carries earlier question papers for Class 9, the HSC and Madhyama, and nothing imitates the real paper more closely.
  • A supplementary sitting. A supplementary HSC examination follows the annual one, with its own results notice.
  • Bilingual certificates. The board has sought public opinion on bilingual pass certificates for the HSC, Madhyama and State Open School examinations; watch its notices for the outcome.

We will not guess how the marks of each paper divide between the objective and written parts. Take that from the current sample papers in the board's examinations menu, or from the school.

Subjects, languages and the medium of study

In the 2026–27 subject list Odia is the first language and English the second; the two English books are Skills of Communicative English and the grammar workbook Learn and Practice Grammar. Mathematics has two prescribed textbooks, and general science and social science complete the core. There are first-language papers in Bengali, Urdu, English and Telugu, third languages including Hindi, Sanskrit and Persian, and Environment and Population Education.

Most Odia-medium schools in Cuttack follow this board, while English-medium schools mostly follow CBSE or ICSE. Three practical points follow. Say which language your child answers in, because the tutor must use the maths and science words of that medium. Where the trouble is the Odia or English language paper itself, look for someone who prepares students for that exact paper; the English home tutor in Cuttack page covers the English side. And if your child will switch to an English-medium +2, begin an Odia–English glossary of science and maths terms in Class 9.

Choosing electives for the CHSE +2 course

Alongside four electives, the compulsory part of every +2 course is English, one modern Indian language (Odia, for instance, or Alternative English in its place) and a combined paper in environment education, yoga and basic computing. The council's science course document sets the order: physics and chemistry first, then mathematics, biology or geology as the third or fourth subject, and a fourth that may instead come from a second group including statistics, computer science, information technology, electronics, biotechnology, economics, geography and Sanskrit. Its commerce document makes accountancy, business studies and management, and business mathematics and statistics compulsory, with the fourth elective chosen from options such as cost accounting and business economics.

The same science document says the first-year examination is held by the college or school for 100 marks per subject and counts only for promotion, while the pass certificate rests on the council's examination at the end of the second year. Confirm the current rule with the college, since documents are revised. For single subjects, see our Cuttack pages for maths, physics, chemistry and biology.

Internal marks in +2 mathematics

The council's rationalised maths file gives the Class 12 written paper 80 marks and keeps 20 for internal work, in two halves of 10. The first half comes from three pen-and-paper periodic tests, suggested for July–August, November and December–January, though schools may set their own dates; each is scaled to 10 and the average of the better two counts. The second half comes from at least ten activities done through the year: the activities and their record are worth 5, a year-end test on an activity 3, and a viva 2. A tutor should know when the school holds each periodic test and plan revision for those weeks. The prescribed books are NCERT's textbooks, exemplar problems and lab manuals, with the state bureau's Elements of Mathematics.

Practical marks in the +2 sciences

How the CHSE science practicals are marked, from the council's 2023 files
SubjectPractical marksWhat earns them
Physics30, beside a 70-mark theory paperOne experiment worth 15, plus the record, a question on the experiments and a viva; at least eight experiments in the year
Chemistry30, beside a 70-mark theory paperIn Class 11, salt analysis for the acid radical is worth 10, split between dry and wet tests, with a second experiment, a viva and the record
Biology15 for each of botany and zoologyA major experiment, spotting, the record and a viva

Steady work earns these marks. A tutor can check the record monthly and quiz each experiment's aim and result, leaving the writing to the student.

Free official material worth opening

  • bseodisha.ac.in: the subject-wise syllabus with its assessment calendar, Class IX and Class X textbook pages, past question papers, objective scoring keys, sample papers, a Class 10 English teaching video and the list of equivalent boards.
  • chseodisha.nic.in: +2 syllabi by stream and subject, the rationalised science files, the examination notices and schedule pages, and the equivalent boards list.

During the trial lesson, find out which of these files the tutor actually uses for your child's year. One who knows the current syllabus can name the chapters due for the next IA from memory.

Four years of state-board tuition at a glance

How state-board tuition shifts from stage to stage in Cuttack

+2 second yearUnit marks guiding revision; timed full papers; periodic tests and records; entrance work beside it if plannedTwice per main subject before the examinations

Entrance examinations alongside the +2

A +2 science student with engineering or medicine in mind usually adds national entrance work to the council's course; see JEE home tutor in Cuttack and NEET home tutor in Cuttack. For state admissions, the OJEE committee was formed under the state's 2007 law on admission to professional institutions, with the approval of the Skill Development and Technical Education Department, to hold common entrance examinations and counselling for undergraduate and postgraduate professional courses. Which courses it covers in a given year is in the current brochure on ojee.nic.in. Families on other boards can read our CBSE or ICSE and ISC pages, and anyone deciding at the end of Class 10 can use the board and stream guide.

How tutors reach Cuttack's localities

Most of Cuttack lies between the Mahanadi and the Kathajodi. Tutors mostly come by two-wheeler or car, so the first thing we look at is which part of the city they live in. Notes from our locality research:

  • Badambadi: the main city bus terminus is here, useful for tutors without a vehicle; name a spot well clear of the junction.
  • Link Road: shops, banks and offices line the road, with homes in colonies just off it; send the building, floor and flat number.
  • College Square: one of the busiest crossings in the city; suggest a quieter side road for the tutor to stop on.
  • Naya Bazar: written Nuabazar in the ward list; give both spellings and the lane.
  • Chauliaganj: on the road towards Paradeep; name the vihar and a side lane.
  • Mahanadi Vihar: laid out in numbered blocks and plots, so block and plot number find the door.

The zone pages cover every side of the city: CDA and Bidanasi, Old City West, Old City East, Mangalabag, Ranihat and College Square, Badambadi and Link Road and Madhupatna, Naya Bazar and Mahanadi Vihar. Every locality is on the Cuttack home tutors page, and the Cuttack home tuition guide goes zone by zone. Families in the capital can use our Odisha Board tutor in Bhubaneswar page and the Bhubaneswar home tutors hub.

At home or online

Class 9 and 10 work, with its step-by-step written answers, suits a tutor at the table. In the +2 years, a home session plus an online one is often easier to sustain, and online helps with a fourth elective such as statistics or computer science that nobody nearby teaches. See online tuition in Cuttack and the home tutor or online tutor comparison.

What to ask a state-board tutor in the demo

  1. Which BSE or CHSE classes and subjects have you taught? Class 10 maths and +2 chemistry are different jobs.
  2. What is due before the next assessment? A tutor who has read this session's syllabus file will know.
  3. What is your plan for the objective questions? A good answer mentions the clock and the board's own old papers.
  4. In which language will practice answers be written? The same one your child will use in the hall.
  5. How will you support periodic tests, activities and practical records? Checked and guided, never written for the student.
  6. Which road will you use, and what happens on a festival day? A clear answer here keeps the slot alive.

You receive two or three matched tutors, each with the fee visible before the demo; that first class costs nothing, and nor does a change of tutor later. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete (how we check tutors). Our checklist for parents suggests further questions.

Which body runs Class 10 and which runs Classes 11 and 12 in Odisha?

BSE Odisha runs Classes 9 and 10 and the Annual HSC examination, and its main office is in Cuttack. The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha runs the +2 stage, Classes 11 and 12, in Arts, Science and Commerce, from its office in Bhubaneswar.

What are IA and AC marks in BSE Odisha Class 10?

IA and AC marks are the internal assessment and aspirational component marks that schools send to BSE Odisha before the annual examination. The 2026–27 syllabus plans four internal assessments of 10 marks and an aspirational component of 20 in each term, with half-yearly and annual examinations of 100.

How many objective questions were in each BSE HSC 2026 paper?

The board's scoring keys for the 2026 Annual HSC examination list 50 objective questions in each subject, printed in four sets, A to D. The papers also have a written part, since the board rechecks totals in both objective and subjective answer books. Take the exact split from current sample papers.

Which electives can a CHSE +2 Science student choose?

In the council's science course document, physics and chemistry come first, then mathematics, biology or geology as the third or fourth elective. The fourth may instead come from a second group that includes statistics, computer science, information technology, electronics, biotechnology, economics, geography and Sanskrit. Confirm current options with the college.

How are internal marks given in CHSE +2 mathematics?

CHSE +2 mathematics keeps 20 of its 100 marks for internal work, split into two halves of 10. One half comes from three periodic tests, with the better two averaged. The other comes from at least ten activities: record 5, a year-end activity test 3 and a viva 2.

Does my child need a tutor who teaches in Odia for BSE Class 10?

If your child writes the BSE papers in Odia, choose a tutor who can teach maths and science terms in Odia. Tell us the medium when you send the request. If your child will move to an English-medium +2, ask the tutor to start an Odia and English glossary of terms in Class 9.

What is OJEE and how is it different from the CHSE examination?

OJEE is the state committee that holds common entrance examinations and counselling for professional courses in Odisha, while the CHSE examination is the +2 board examination. The committee was formed under the state's 2007 law on admission to professional institutions. Read the current brochure on ojee.nic.in for the courses it covers.

How do state-board tutors reach Badambadi, Naya Bazar or Mahanadi Vihar?

State-board tutors usually reach these localities from neighbouring colonies, and Badambadi also has the city's main bus terminus. Give a landmark away from Badambadi junction, both spellings, Naya Bazar and Nuabazar, with the lane, and the block and plot number in Mahanadi Vihar.
