ICSE and ISC home tutors in Cuttack: careful English, three sciences in balance, electives chosen early

In Cuttack, English-medium schools mostly follow either CBSE or the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, which sets the ICSE examination in Class 10 and the ISC in Class 12. CISCE families tend to look for a particular kind of tutor: someone who will mark a long answer line by line, keep physics, chemistry and biology moving at the same pace, and help a Class 10 student think clearly about which ISC subjects to take before the choice is fixed. This page sets out what the council's regulations ask for, how a tutor plans the CISCE years, what changes if a student moves to the state's +2 course, and how tutors reach homes from Link Road to Chauliaganj.

Where the CISCE schools sit among Cuttack's boards

The city's Odia-medium schools come under BSE Odisha, whose main office is in Cuttack, and most students then move to the Council of Higher Secondary Education for the +2 years. English-medium schools mostly follow CBSE or CISCE. For a tutor, the CISCE course stands apart in three ways: it is broad, with many subjects examined in Class 10; it rewards long, well-organised written answers; and a fair share of marks comes from work done in school through the year. If a tutor's experience is mostly with state or CBSE papers, ask how their teaching would change for CISCE.

How the ICSE subjects are grouped

The three ICSE groups, as the regulations arrange them
GroupWhat it holdsExam : school marks
Group I (compulsory)English, a second language, and History, Civics and Geography80 : 20
Group II (choose two or three)Choices include Mathematics and Science, Economics or Commercial Studies, Environmental Science, and modern foreign or classical languages80 : 20
Group III, one subjectAn applied subject, for example Computer Applications, Art or Physical Education50 : 50

The Group III subject earns half its marks inside school, so it pays to keep its projects moving month by month. Leaving that work to the last term of Class 10 throws away marks that are among the easiest on the certificate.

Mathematics and the three science papers

In ICSE Mathematics the written paper is worth 80. The other 20 marks come from two or more assignments, and both the class teacher and an outside examiner mark each one. The course mixes commercial arithmetic, including banking and shares, with algebra, trigonometry, geometry and statistics. Examiners look for working at every step, so a tidy final line with steps missing still loses marks. Our maths home tutors in Cuttack page covers the subject across boards.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics are examined separately, each through its own paper of 80 plus 20 practical marks assessed in school. Strength in one does not carry the others, which is why parents should ask early whether one tutor can teach all three well or whether the weakest needs its own specialist. Each year the council publishes an Analysis of Pupil Performance by subject, which records the errors examiners met; read with the specimen papers, it is the soundest guide a tutor has. See also science home tutors in Cuttack.

English, the second language and History-Civics-Geography

Group I is where many CISCE students in Cuttack gain or lose ground without noticing. English is compulsory and examined in depth, with composition and literature both demanding organised writing. The second language is chosen from those the school offers, so check the list with the school rather than assuming. History, Civics and Geography rewards students who write precise, well-ordered answers with dates, terms and map work in place. A weekly piece of timed writing in each Group I subject, marked against the specimen paper, builds the habit. For the English side, see English home tutors in Cuttack.

A revision rhythm for a wide syllabus

Chapters taught in Class 9 come back in the Class 10 papers, so a CISCE tutor plans revision from the first term, not the last. Three habits make the difference:

  • A rotation. Every few weeks, one session in each subject goes back to an older chapter, so nothing is forgotten by the board year.
  • Writing against the clock early. Timed long answers start in Class 9, because speed with good structure builds slowly.
  • A dated list of internal work. Projects, assignments and practical records are checked against the list at the start of each month.

Inside a single session, that usually means marking the student's own attempts line by line, teaching one new topic, and closing with one full answer written to time.

ISC in Classes 11 and 12: the rules to know in Class 10

  • How many subjects. Everyone studies English; alongside it come between three and five electives, and the overall ceiling is six.
  • When choices freeze. The regulations set a cut-off during the year of Class 11 registration, after which the subject list stays as it is. A Class 12 subject must also have been studied in Class 11.
  • Moving up. Promotion to Class 12 needs 35% in four subjects, one of them English, and attendance of at least 75%.
  • Practical work. Wherever a subject has practicals they are compulsory, and Engineering Science and Physics are not allowed together.
  • Passing. Results are graded 1 to 9. The pass certificate requires English and three more subjects, as well as Socially Useful Productive Work and Community Service.

In ISC Mathematics, both years combine a theory paper worth 80 with a project worth 20. For the detail, read our ISC maths tutor page or the guide to ICSE and ISC maths.

Keeping ISC science and entrance preparation together

An ISC science student who also prepares for engineering or medical entrance is following two chapter orders. Entrance papers assume NCERT, whereas ISC uses different books and a different order, so a topic may turn up in school and in coaching months apart. In the first weeks of Class 11, ask the tutor for a one-page chart that pairs every ISC chapter with its NCERT twin and shows both due dates. Gaps then get filled in each direction: NCERT phrasing and short objective drills where ISC is thin, and protecting long answers and practicals where the coaching class does not look. See JEE home tutors in Cuttack and NEET home tutors in Cuttack.

After Class 10: ISC, CHSE or CBSE

Some Cuttack students stay with CISCE for ISC; others move to a CHSE +2 course or to CBSE. Each path has a different adjustment. A student going to CHSE science will find that the council's maths and physics files prescribe NCERT books, so the content is familiar, but the papers and internal assessment follow the council's own scheme. A student going to CBSE meets NCERT directly and the CBSE sample-paper style. In both cases, a tutor's first month should be spent on the subjects where the new course starts at a different point. The council lists the boards it treats as equivalent on chseodisha.nic.in. Our guide to choosing a board and stream, the Odisha Board home tutor in Cuttack page and the CBSE home tutor in Cuttack page cover the alternatives.

Home or online for CISCE students

Long-answer marking and diagram work suit a tutor at the table, especially in Classes 9 and 10. Online works well for checking a finished essay or a timed paper, and for ISC electives that nobody nearby teaches, where a specialist from another city may be the right choice. Many families mix the two: one home session for the hardest subject and one online session for review. See online tuition in Cuttack.

Checking a tutor in the trial lesson

  1. Hand over a long answer your child wrote recently and let the tutor mark it. Were the lost marks explained clearly?
  2. Have they used the council's specimen papers and its Analysis of Pupil Performance for this subject?
  3. How will they keep the Group III projects and science practical work on schedule?
  4. For a Class 10 student, what would they ask before advising on ISC electives?
  5. Which weekly slot can they keep through the board year?

If the match is not right, we arrange another demo; switching tutor later is free. The demo class checklist lists more questions.

ICSE Home Tutor in Cuttack (ICSE & ISC, Classes 6–12): common questions

How much do ICSE and ISC home tutors in Cuttack charge?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. ICSE and ISC tutors in Cuttack set their own rates, and each fee is on the profile before you book.

What is the first step to find an ICSE tutor in Cuttack?

Share the class, the subjects, school hours and a locality landmark, and we suggest two or three matched ICSE or ISC tutors. Every fee is visible before you book. Your first lesson is a free demo, and if the tutor stops suiting your child later, switching is free.

Which ICSE subject gives half its marks to school-based work?

The Group III subject gives half its marks to work assessed in school, with a 50 : 50 split. Groups I and II are 80 : 20. Because Group III marks build up through the year, keep its projects moving monthly instead of leaving them to the last term of Class 10.

Can one tutor handle ICSE physics, chemistry and biology together?

One tutor can sometimes cover all three ICSE sciences, but ask early whether they teach each one equally well. Each science has its own 80-mark paper plus 20 practical marks, so strength in one does not lift the others. A weak subject may need its own specialist.

When do ISC subject choices become fixed for a Cuttack student?

ISC subject choices freeze after a cut-off set by the regulations during the Class 11 registration year. After that the list cannot change, and nothing can be taken in Class 12 that was not studied in Class 11. Think through electives with the tutor while your child is still in Class 10.

What must a Cuttack ISC student achieve in Class 11 to be promoted?

Promotion from ISC Class 11 to Class 12 needs 35% in four subjects, one of them English, and at least 75% attendance. Practicals are compulsory in every subject that has them, so a tutor should keep practical work and records on schedule through Class 11 as well.

Should an ICSE student in Cuttack move to CHSE or CBSE for Class 11?

Either move can work, and the right choice depends on your child's subjects and plans. CHSE science prescribes NCERT books for maths and physics but uses its own papers and internal assessment, while CBSE follows NCERT and its sample-paper style. Check the equivalent boards list on chseodisha.nic.in before admission.

How do ICSE tutors reach Link Road, Khannagar or Chauliaganj?

ICSE tutors usually reach Link Road along the stretch towards Badambadi, Khannagar from the colonies towards the Kathajodi, and Chauliaganj along the road towards Paradeep. Send the building and flat number for Link Road, the colony name in Khannagar, and a side lane to stop in at Chauliaganj.

Do online ICSE classes work for long-answer subjects?

Online ICSE classes work well for reviewing finished essays and timed papers, and for ISC electives nobody nearby teaches. Detailed long-answer marking and diagram work usually go better at the table, especially in Classes 9 and 10, so many families mix one home session with one online review.
