Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Many Salem children speak Tamil at home and with friends, then sit their exams in English. One reads fluently but loses marks on the layout of a letter. Another follows every lesson yet writes three thin lines when a full answer is needed. A third needs spoken English for an interview more than for the board. Before searching, we ask four things: your child's board (Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE, ICSE or ISC, or an international course), the weakest skill, the language your child is most relaxed in, and your locality. Then two or three English tutors who fit come back to you with fees shown, and the first class with your chosen tutor is a free demo.
The subject is always called English, but the paper behind the name changes from board to board. This table shows what a tutor should be preparing for.
| Board | Class 10 | Class 12 | Teach from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu State Board | English is one of the SSLC papers | English is one of the Higher Secondary papers | The prescribed state English book, plus any official papers |
| CBSE | Language and Literature, 80 marks on the board paper and 20 in school | English Core, 80 on paper; 20 for listening, speaking and a project | NCERT books and the sample papers CBSE releases |
| CISCE | ICSE has a language paper and a literature paper, both out of 80 with internal marks added | ISC also has two papers of 80, each linked to project work | Texts the school has set, and specimen papers |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE: First Language is 0500; Second Language is 0510 or 0511 | IB Language A: analysing an unseen text, a comparative essay, an oral | Earlier papers for the exact entry |
For State Board students, both public examinations, the SSLC and the Higher Secondary, are run by the Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu, with March/June sessions, and each includes an English paper. We keep our advice on those papers general, because the Directorate fixes and revises their format; any tutor should check the current scheme on dge.tn.gov.in before setting practice.
In practice, a good State Board English tutor works from the prescribed English textbook, practises with official papers where they are available, and explains in Tamil whenever that opens up a meaning, while every written answer stays in English. Ask too how the tutor will build the habit of writing a complete paragraph, since that is where many Tamil-first students lose the most marks. Our Tamil Nadu Board tutors in Salem page covers the board in other subjects.
The 2026-27 curriculum splits the board paper into blocks of very different size. Lesson time should follow those sizes, not the order in which school covers chapters.
| Section | Marks | Weekly practice |
|---|---|---|
| Literature, from First Flight and Footprints without Feet | 40 | Answers that state the point first, keep to the word limit and refer to the text |
| Reading: one discursive passage and one factual, case-based passage with a chart or data | 20 | One unseen passage against the clock |
| Grammar, from the syllabus list | 10 | Errors from your child's own writing, fixed one kind at a time |
| Writing: a formal letter (5) and an analytical paragraph on a chart, map or graph (5) | 10 | Layout learnt once, then content and linking words practised |
The school adds 20 more, 5 of them for listening and speaking; a two-sentence spoken summary at the end of each lesson helps there. Literature, half the paper, is where most marks leak: a student can retell a chapter well in Tamil and still write a thin answer in English. Marking two full literature answers a week for relevance and length does more than extra grammar drills. See our CBSE tutors in Salem page for the other subjects.
Whether your child moved from a Tamil-medium school or simply thinks in Tamil, the method is the same: lean on Tamil early, then take the support away step by step.
Yes, and the two aims help each other: CBSE, ICSE and ISC all give marks for listening and speaking. A good pattern starts with a short spoken recap of the day's reading, moves to two-minute talks on a familiar subject, and later to mock interview questions. If you want confidence for college or job interviews rather than just marks, say so in your request, because it changes which tutors we suggest.
In the early years the goal is confident reading, not exam answers. Watch for a child who guesses words from the first letter, loses the line, or avoids books. The cure is short and frequent: sounding out new words aloud, reading a page to a patient listener, then telling the story back in their own words, with handwriting practice alongside. Short sessions several days a week usually work better for small children than one long weekend class. If English is seldom spoken at home, look for a tutor who talks about pictures and simple stories in English and switches to Tamil only when the child is stuck.
In CBSE English Core, Class 11 marks split as 26 for reading, 23 for grammar with creative writing, and 31 for literature from Hornbill and Snapshots. Class 12 moves the weight towards literature: 22 for reading, 18 for creative writing, 40 for literature. ISC students write a 400 to 450-word composition on one of six topics, plus directed writing and a proposal, with literature examined on its own paper. IGCSE families should confirm First or Second Language; IB students prepare an unseen analysis and an individual oral. Few Salem tutors teach these, so online lessons often fill the gap. Our national English home tutor guide covers every course in more depth.
A tutor who lives on your side of Salem usually keeps a weekly slot most reliably, so the address you send matters. Every locality is on our Salem home tuition page.
| Locality | What the tutor will find | Share before the first lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Alagapuram | A settled residential part of north-west Salem, streets opening onto the road between Fairlands and Hasthampatti | The nagar or layout name ahead of the street |
| Fairlands | Independent houses and flats, in two parts residents call Fairlands and New Fairlands | Which part, then door number, and block and floor for a flat |
| Swarnapuri | A compact neighbourhood near the New Bus Stand, with lanes close together | Door number and cross street, and whether two children need lessons back to back |
| Chinna Thirupathi | A residential area in north-east Salem near Kannankurichi Main Road | Which side of the main road you are on, and a park or shop to look for |
| Kannankurichi | A panchayat town at the foothills of the Yercaud hills, on the city's north-east edge | Directions from Kannankurichi Main Road, and whether notes will be shared between visits |
| Jagir Ammapalayam | The western outskirts, near the Dharmapuri main road and the Bengaluru highway | Layout and plot number, both spellings, and a phone number to call from the main road |
The Fairlands and Alagapuram and Hasthampatti and Kannankurichi zone pages add timing tips, and our Salem home tuition guide compares all five zones.
From around Class 3, most children manage English online well, provided the tutor reads their writing first, sent as a notebook photo or a shared document. Screen lessons also bring in an ISC, IGCSE or IB specialist from elsewhere, and they help families at the city's edge, in Kannankurichi or Jagir Ammapalayam for instance. Lessons in person remain better for early readers, for shy speakers and for the first months after a switch from Tamil-medium study. A mix of one visit and one screen lesson a week is common; our online tutors for Salem page explains how.
If several of these did not happen, let us know; another tutor from the shortlist gives a demo, and a later switch is free. The demo class checklist for parents has more pointers.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fees, which depend on the class and board, their experience with that paper, the visit at your chosen hour and the lessons each week. You see every fee on the shortlist before the demo; our Salem home tuition fees article has more.
Send us the class and board, the skill you are worried about, the language your child prefers, your locality and a landmark, suitable days and a budget. We reply with two or three tutors and their fees, and you book a free demo class with one. Yes, a Salem English tutor can explain in Tamil while every written answer stays in English. Good tutors lean on Tamil early, translate in both directions, keep a reading diary and a phrase bank, and agree a date, often the end of the first term, after which lessons run only in English.
Literature from First Flight and Footprints without Feet carries 40 of the 80 board marks in 2026-27. Reading carries 20 across two passages, grammar 10, and writing 10, split between a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. The school adds 20 more, including 5 for listening and speaking.
A tutor should work from the prescribed English textbook and practise with official papers where available. Building the habit of writing full paragraphs matters most. The Directorate of Government Examinations runs the SSLC and Higher Secondary exams, each with an English paper, and sets the current format on dge.tn.gov.in.
Yes, one English tutor can work on both, since CBSE, ICSE and ISC all give marks for listening and speaking. Lessons can start with a spoken recap of the day's reading, move to two-minute talks and later to mock interview questions. Mention interview goals in your request, because they change the shortlist.
A young child in Classes 1 to 5 needs confident reading more than exam answers. A tutor should have the child sound out new words, read a page aloud, retell the story and practise handwriting. Short sessions several days a week usually suit small children better than one long weekend class.
Online English suits most children from about Class 3, including families at the edge of Salem. It works as long as the tutor sees the written work first, from a notebook photo or shared file. Early readers and shy speakers usually do better in person, so many families mix one home visit with one online lesson.
ISC English asks for a 400 to 450-word composition on one of six topics, plus directed writing and a proposal. Literature sits on a separate paper. CBSE English Core Class 12 gives 22 marks to reading, 18 to creative writing and 40 to literature, so the two need different weekly practice.
