What home tuition costs in Salem

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

ICSE home tutors by locality in Salem

ICSE and ISC home tutors in Salem: a wide syllabus, written answers that earn every mark, and electives chosen early

Salem's schools follow the Tamil Nadu State Board and CBSE among others, and many local tutors teach those two, so a family on the CISCE route (ICSE up to Class 10, ISC in Classes 11 and 12) may be choosing from a smaller pool of tutors who know that board well. That is worth planning around. The council's papers reward long, carefully set out answers across many subjects, and its rules on ISC subject choice close options early. This page explains how ICSE groups its subjects, how the maths and science papers are marked, which ISC rules catch families out, how tutors reach six localities in the east and south of the city, and when an online specialist is the sensible choice.

Finding a tutor who knows the CISCE papers

A tutor who teaches State Board or CBSE students well has not necessarily taught ICSE or ISC recently, and the difference shows in marking. The council publishes specimen papers and a subject-wise Analysis of Pupil Performance, which explains where candidates lost marks. A tutor who has read those for the current year will teach your child to answer the way examiners want. When you send a request, say "ICSE" or "ISC" clearly and name the class, so we look for tutors with that experience first. If nobody nearby fits for a particular subject, we will suggest an online tutor rather than a mismatch at home.

How ICSE arranges the Class 10 subjects

ICSE subject groups and their mark split
GroupContentsExamination : internal
Group I (every candidate)English, the second language, and the combined History, Civics and Geography paper80 : 20
Group II (a choice of two or three)For example Mathematics, Science, Commercial Studies, Economics or Environmental Science, or else a foreign or classical language80 : 20
Group III (a choice of one)An applied subject, for instance Physical Education, Art, or Computer, Commercial or Economic Applications50 : 50

Because internal work makes up half of Group III, that subject is won or lost across the whole year. Projects that are kept moving each month collect those marks easily; a pile left for the final term does not. Put the project calendar on the tutor's list from the first session.

Maths and the three science papers

Mathematics has one written paper of 80 marks. The other 20 come from at least two internal assignments, which the school's teacher marks and an external examiner also marks. The syllabus runs from commercial arithmetic, including banking and shares, through algebra, geometry and trigonometry to statistics, and marks are given for working at each stage. A correct final line with steps missing still loses marks.

Physics, Chemistry and Biology are three separate 80-mark papers, each with 20 marks of internal practical work. A good physics mark does nothing for chemistry, so settle early on whether a single tutor can take all three far enough or whether the weakest science needs its own teacher. See our Salem maths, physics and biology pages for subject detail.

Revision by rotation

ICSE chapters from Class 9 come back in the Class 10 papers, and a wide syllabus goes cold quickly if it is revised only once. A rotation keeps it warm. Each week, one session spends a part of its time on an older chapter from a different paper, so every chapter comes round again within a term. Timed long answers start in Class 9, because writing speed grows slowly. A dated list of internal assignments and projects is checked at the start of each month. Within a session, the order that works is simple: the tutor marks the student's own attempt line by line, teaches one new point, and closes with one full answer written against the clock.

Five ISC regulations that shape Class 11

  • Load. Every candidate takes English, then adds between three and five electives; six subjects is the ceiling.
  • Lock-in. The regulations name a date in the Class 11 registration year after which the subject list is fixed. A Class 12 subject must also have been studied in Class 11, so a late switch is not possible.
  • Moving up. Entry to Class 12 needs 75% attendance and 35% in four subjects, English being one of them.
  • Practical work. It is compulsory in every subject that includes it, and Engineering Science and Physics are not allowed together.
  • Passing. Grades run from 1 to 9. The certificate needs passes in four subjects with English among them, as well as Community Service and Socially Useful Productive Work.

In ISC Mathematics, both years combine a theory paper worth 80 with a project worth 20. For the detail, see the ISC maths tutor page and our guide to ICSE and ISC maths.

A workable ICSE week

With many subjects carrying internal marks, an ICSE week needs a little structure at home as well as in the sessions. One pattern that holds up: two tutor sessions for the subject that needs most help, one shorter session for a second subject, and a fixed half-hour on Sunday when the student and a parent look at the project and assignment list together. If a shop or work keeps a parent busy in the evenings, as it can in the central localities, that Sunday check matters even more, because it is often the only time the whole list is seen at once. Ask the tutor to leave a short written note after each session, so the family knows what was covered.

ISC alongside JEE or NEET

The ISC science course is broad and follows its own chapter order, which does not always match the NCERT-based entrance syllabus. A tutor should draw a two-column map in the first month of Class 11: ISC chapters on one side, entrance units on the other, with dates for each. That map shows where the two run together and where one needs extra time. Long ISC answers and fast entrance questions are different skills, so a weekly session can give a part to each. The JEE and NEET pages for Salem describe the entrance side.

After Class 10: staying with ISC or changing board

After ICSE, some students continue to ISC and others move to CBSE or to the State Board for Class 11. Each move changes the paper. CBSE senior science gives 30 marks to practical work in each subject. The State Board's Higher Secondary papers, printed in a Tamil and English version, ran to 90 marks in maths and 70 in physics and chemistry in the March 2026 first-year set, with compulsory questions in the short-answer sections. A student used to long ICSE answers often finds the State Board's 5-mark answers familiar, but still has to learn the exact terms of the state textbooks. Compare the options on our CBSE home tutors in Salem and Tamil Nadu State Board tutors in Salem pages, and read choosing a board and stream.

Home or online for ICSE in Salem?

For Classes 6 to 10, a tutor at home is usually easier for marking long answers and checking practical notebooks. For ISC, particularly a less common elective, the right teacher may not live in Salem at all, and online lessons solve that. A mix also works: one home visit for the core subject and an online session for the elective. Our online tutors for Salem page explains how it is set up, and online tutor profiles can be filtered by board and class.

Testing a tutor against the CISCE style

  1. Ask which year's specimen papers and Analysis of Pupil Performance the tutor has read.
  2. Give the tutor one of your child's long answers and watch how it is marked, line by line.
  3. For ICSE maths, ask how marks for working are protected in a commercial arithmetic question.
  4. For ISC, ask how the tutor would plan project work and practicals across the year.
  5. Check that the tutor can keep a fixed weekly slot, or offer a clear online alternative.

If the fit is wrong, we set up another demo, and switching tutor later is free. The demo class checklist lists further questions.

ICSE Home Tutor in Salem (ICSE & ISC, Classes 6–12): common questions

What is the fee for an ICSE or ISC home tutor in Salem?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each ICSE or ISC tutor in Salem sets their own fee, which you see before booking the demo.

What should I send to find an ICSE tutor in Salem?

To find an ICSE tutor in Salem, send the class, whether it is ICSE or ISC, the subjects or electives and your locality with a landmark. We suggest two or three matched tutors, each fee shown beforehand. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Why might a Salem family need an online tutor for an ISC elective?

A Salem family may need an online tutor for an ISC elective because fewer local tutors may have taught that subject recently. Online lessons bring in a teacher from another city who knows the current specimen papers. One workable mix keeps the core subject at home and the elective online.

For a Salem ICSE family, how do the three Class 10 subject groups differ in marking?

ICSE Class 10 subjects fall into three groups. Group I is compulsory and Group II needs two or three subjects, both marked 80 for the exam and 20 internal. Group III is one applied subject marked 50 and 50, so its internal work through the year carries half the marks.

When are ISC subject choices fixed for Class 11 students?

ISC subject choices are fixed after a date set in the regulations during the Class 11 registration year, and a Class 12 subject must have been studied in Class 11. Students take English plus three to five electives, up to six subjects. Choose electives with a tutor before that date.

Can an ISC student in Salem prepare for JEE or NEET at the same time?

Yes, an ISC student in Salem can prepare for JEE or NEET alongside the board, with a plan. A tutor should draw a two-column map in the first month of Class 11, ISC chapters against entrance units with dates, and give each weekly session a part for long answers and a part for fast questions.

How do ICSE tutors reach Ammapet, Kondalampatti and Kitchipalayam?

ICSE tutors reach Ammapet from Gugai, Ponnammapet or Hasthampatti, Kondalampatti from the Salem bypass side, and Kitchipalayam from the Trichy Main Road side. Give the spelling on your address, say which side of the bypass you live on, and send a location link that opens on your street.

What should an ICSE student in Salem expect if moving to the State Board for +1?

An ICSE student moving to the State Board for +1 meets papers printed in a Tamil and English version, with compulsory questions in the short-answer sections. In the March 2026 first-year set, maths carried 90 marks and physics and chemistry 70. Long ICSE answers help, but the state textbook terms must be learned.

How can a Salem ICSE student keep many subjects from going cold before Class 10?

A Salem ICSE student can keep many subjects warm by revising in rotation. Each week, part of one session returns to an older chapter from a different paper, so every chapter comes round within a term. Timed long answers begin in Class 9, and the project list is checked monthly.
