Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Schools in Salem follow the Tamil Nadu State Board and CBSE, among others, and with both boards around it is easy for a student to carry habits from one board's papers into the other's. A CBSE paper is built differently from a State Board paper, marks its internal component differently and, at secondary level, leans heavily on case and source questions. A CBSE home tutor in Salem should know those differences cold. This page sets out what CBSE asks from Class 6 to Class 12 under the 2026–27 curriculum, how its papers compare with the State Board's, what to expect if your child moves between the two, how tutors reach six localities on the eastern and southern side of the city, and what to check in the free demo.
We do not publish how many Salem students are on each board, because no reliable local figure exists. What matters for tuition is the shape of the papers. A State Board Class 10 student sits the SSLC set by the Directorate of Government Examinations; the March 2026 papers in its question bank show the pattern.
| Point | CBSE (2026–27 curriculum) | State Board SSLC (March 2026 papers) |
|---|---|---|
| Marks in maths | 80 written plus 20 internal | One 100-mark paper in four parts |
| Marks in science | 80 written plus 20 internal | One 75-mark paper in four parts |
| Style | About half the questions competency-based: cases, data, real situations | Short items, then chosen 2-mark and longer answers, each set with one compulsory question |
| Drawing and maps | Diagrams and graphs inside answers | A full maths part of construction and graph; maps and a timeline in social science |
| Language | The school's medium | Papers printed in a Tamil and English version |
The textbooks also differ: CBSE schools use NCERT, while the State Board uses the state's own books. A tutor who teaches mainly State Board students should show, before taking on a CBSE child, that they know the current CBSE sample paper and marking scheme. Our Tamil Nadu State Board tutors in Salem page covers the other side in detail.
| Class | Who sets the paper | Where students slip | What tuition does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 | The school | Fractions, integers, reading a science passage closely | Fixes the base and builds the habit of showing working |
| 9 | The school, an 80-mark paper with 20 internal | Algebra and science step up together | Chapter tests and a decision on the Advanced paper |
| 10 | CBSE, 80 written with 20 from school | Case questions and complete answers | Past sample papers, checked line by line against CBSE's scheme |
| 11 | The school | The sharp start in physics, chemistry and maths | Getting the new chapters solid while there is still time |
| 12 | CBSE: written papers, with practical or internal marks | Revising everything while entrances approach | One plan for board and entrance |
A Class 10 subject needs 33% to pass. When a Class 9 student suddenly struggles in algebra, the cause is usually older: fractions or simple equations from Classes 6 to 8. Good tuition at that age repairs before it hurries on.
Class 9 maths and science each have one paper of 80 marks that every student writes. A student can also choose to attempt an extra Advanced paper, worth 25, in maths, science, both subjects or none. All of its questions are higher-order and go beyond the common syllabus. Those 25 marks are not added to the aggregate; the marksheet simply records the result when it reaches half marks or above. We suggest it only for a child who already likes the subject, never as a fix for shaky basics. Separately, the two-level maths choice (Basic or Standard) is ending, with the students in Class 10 during 2026–27 the final group to sit it.
Class 10 itself now carries two board sittings. Everyone must take the first. A student who has passed can use the second to raise the marks in as many as three subjects chosen from science, mathematics, social science and the languages. Prepare as if the first sitting is the only one; the second is insurance.
In the 2026–27 senior curriculum, each science, that is Biology (044), Chemistry (043) and Physics (042), has a written theory paper of 70 marks, and the remaining 30 come from practical work. Mathematics (041) and Applied Mathematics (241) are alternatives; a student takes one, written for 80 with 20 internal. The commerce trio, Economics (030), Business Studies (054) and Accountancy (055), also runs at 80 written and 20 internal.
The Class 12 paper spans the whole Class 12 syllabus, and CBSE has said senior papers will put more weight on applying ideas. Each year's design is published along with that year's sample paper, so ask which year's sample paper the tutor is using. For the board year, try our posts on Class 12 physics strategy, organic and inorganic chemistry and Class 12 calculus and algebra.
Roughly half of each CBSE secondary paper gives a passage, a table or an everyday situation and then asks the student to use an idea on it. Children who know the chapter can still drop marks, because they start writing before they have read. In science, a short routine helps: underline what the passage gives, name the concept it points at, and only then answer. In maths, the same routine means turning the words into an equation before any arithmetic. Practise on NCERT exemplar items and on the board's published sample papers; ordinary worksheets rarely match the style. For Class 10 subjects, see our guides to Class 10 maths and Class 10 science.
Some Salem students change board after Class 10, in either direction. Each move has its own catch.
Either way, ask for a tutor who has taught both boards recently. If the move is still a decision, our guide to choosing a board and stream may help.
A session that moves a CBSE student forward usually has four parts. First, the tutor checks the homework set last time and marks it against the official scheme, not just for the right answer. Second, one new idea is taught, with the student doing most of the talking by the end. Third, one case or source question on that idea is answered under time. Fourth, the tutor sets a small, specific task for the days before the next visit. Parents should be able to see that pattern in the notebook within a few weeks. For subject help, see our Salem maths, science and English pages.
The Ammapet and Shevapet, Kondalampatti and Seelanaickenpatti and Suramangalam and Jagir Ammapalayam zone pages add timing advice. All localities are on the Salem home tutors page, and the Salem home tuition guide walks through each zone.
For Classes 6 to 10, home lessons usually work better: younger students settle more easily with a tutor at the table, and maths working and science diagrams are easier to correct on paper. From Class 11, online lessons make sense for a specialist subject, for example Applied Mathematics or Accountancy, when no nearby tutor has taught it recently. One arrangement that works well combines the two: one home visit a week and one shorter online session. See online tutors for Salem for how that works.
If the answers do not satisfy you, ask for another demo; changing tutor later is free. Our demo checklist has more ideas.

A CBSE Class 10 paper gives 80 marks to the written exam and 20 to school assessment, with about half the questions competency-based. The March 2026 SSLC papers were single papers, 100 marks in maths and 75 in science, in four parts with compulsory questions, printed in a Tamil and English version.
Your child should take the CBSE Advanced paper in Class 9 only if they already enjoy maths or science. It is an optional 25-mark paper of higher-order questions on extra content, kept outside the aggregate, with a score of 50% or more noted on the marksheet. It does not repair weak basics.
A Salem student moving from the State Board to CBSE for Class 11 must adjust to NCERT wording, case-based questions and practical work worth 30 marks in each science. A tutor should spend the first weeks on the NCERT Class 10 chapters that the state books treat differently, then move on.
In the 2026–27 CBSE curriculum, Physics, Chemistry and Biology each have a 70-mark theory paper and 30 marks of practical work. Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, a student takes only one, is 80 written with 20 internal, as are Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics.
CBSE tutors reach Gugai and Shevapet from most of Salem, since both are central, and Seelanaickenpatti along the Salem bypass. In Gugai or Shevapet, name a shop sign on your lane and the floor if you live above a shop; in Seelanaickenpatti, start directions from the bypass roundabout.
Home tuition usually suits a CBSE student in Salem from Class 6 to Class 10, because maths working and science diagrams are easier to correct at the table. From Class 11, online lessons help with a specialist subject such as Applied Mathematics or Accountancy when no nearby tutor fits.
One CBSE tuition session in Salem should include four parts. The tutor marks last time's homework against the official scheme, teaches one new idea, has the student answer one case or source question under time, and sets a small, specific task before the next visit.
