Tutoring in Salem: what to know
NXTutors groups Salem into five zones for tutors. Fairlands and Alagapuram covers the residential belt west of the centre: Fairlands, Alagapuram, Swarnapuri and Meyyanur, near the Central Bus Stand on Omalur Main Road. Hasthampatti and Kannankurichi takes in Hasthampatti, Chinna Thirupathi and Kannankurichi at the foothills of the Yercaud hills. Suramangalam and Jagir Ammapalayam is the junction side, with Narasothipatti, out to the western outskirts. Ammapet and Shevapet holds the older eastern and central streets, Ponnammapet and Gugai among them, and Kondalampatti and Seelanaickenpatti runs across the south with Annathanapatti, Kitchipalayam and Nethimedu. Families live in independent houses, flats and, in the central lanes, homes above shops, and most tutors travel by two-wheeler or bus.
Salem students mostly follow the Tamil Nadu State Board or CBSE. State Board examinations are conducted by the Directorate of Government Examinations: the SSLC public examination at Class 10 and the Higher Secondary examinations, listed as HSC (+1) for Class 11 and HSC (+2) for Class 12. Some families follow ICSE and ISC, and IB or IGCSE learners usually take lessons online. Children study in Tamil, in English or in a mix of the two, so say clearly on your profile which medium you can teach in, and whether you can explain a science or maths term in both languages when a student is moving from one medium to the other.
Home visits, online classes or a blend are all open to you. Take a request from a family in Fairlands: NXTutors picks two or three tutors, looking first at people who live in Fairlands, then at those who already teach there, then at the rest of the zone, Salem generally and online tutors. The family can read your fee before the demo, which is free, and moving to another tutor later costs them nothing. The bazaar streets near Shevapet, the Old Bus Stand around Gugai and the main roads by Hasthampatti are slowest at peak hours, so add just the localities you can genuinely get to on time each week, and offer online lessons further out.

1
Sign up with a one-time code
Create your account and confirm your mobile number or email through a one-time code. List your subjects, classes and boards, whether the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE or ICSE, along with your teaching medium and the parts of Salem you can travel to.
-
2
Upload your ID for the ID check
Next, add a government photo ID, which our team reviews. Every tutor who joins goes through this ID check. It establishes your identity only; it is not a police check or a background check.
-
3
Your profile carries the Verified badge
Families can then see your boards, the localities you cover anywhere from Hasthampatti to Kondalampatti, your available hours and your own fee. The Verified badge is added to the profile only after the ID check is complete.

4
A family nearby sends a request
Imagine a parent in Suramangalam or Narasothipatti sends a request. We pick two or three tutors, beginning with those who live there, then those who already travel there, then the zone, the city and online.
-
5
Free demo; the family sees your fee first
Before anything is booked, the parent reads your fee. The opening lesson is a free demo at the family's home, with a parent asked to be in, and it shows you the student's level, medium and free hours.

Teach at home, online or both
After that, the shape is yours: home lessons in the localities you listed, online students from anywhere in Tamil Nadu or India, or both together, such as a Saturday visit in Ponnammapet and online classes through the week.
Boards you can teach in Salem
Salem students you could teach include Tamil Nadu State Board candidates working towards the SSLC and the Higher Secondary HSC (+1) and HSC (+2) examinations, CBSE students, ICSE and ISC students where their schools follow CISCE, and IB or IGCSE learners, most of whom prefer online lessons. Prepare State Board lessons from the textbook in the student's medium and from notices of the Directorate of Government Examinations. For CBSE, start with NCERT and the board's published sample papers; for ICSE and ISC, with CISCE's own regulations; for IB and IGCSE, with each subject's official guide or syllabus.
TNSBD
SSLC (Class 10); HSC (+1) (Class 11); HSC (+2) (Class 12)
The Directorate of Government Examinations conducts the State Board examinations: the SSLC public examination and the Higher Secondary examinations, which it lists separately as HSC (+1) and HSC (+2), in March/June sessions, with special supplementary examinations for Classes 10 and 12. Teach from the state textbook in the Tamil or English version the student uses, and take every timetable and notice from dge.tn.gov.in.
With CBSE students in Salem, keep each lesson anchored to an NCERT chapter, and use the marking schemes and sample papers on cbseacademic.nic.in for practice. If the student is also preparing for JEE or NEET, find out how much of the week that takes, then spend your hour on school tests and full written answers instead of covering the same ground twice.
CISCE
ICSE (Class 10); ISC (Class 12)
The ICSE paper at Class 10 and the ISC paper at Class 12 reward complete written answers over a broad syllabus, and English includes prescribed literature. The regulations and specimen papers to plan from are on cisce.org. A tutor strong in these papers can combine home pupils in one Salem zone with ISC pupils online across Tamil Nadu.
IB
Diploma Programme (Classes 11–12)
Salem's IB Diploma students mostly learn online, working from the subject guides on ibo.org. You can help a student plan the Internal Assessment and Extended Essay and comment on drafts, but every word submitted has to be the student's. Settle on a regular weekly online slot that leaves the school day undisturbed.
Begin by asking whether the learner takes Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, and whether the core or extended tier. Lessons then centre on past papers, mark schemes and the meaning of each command word. Cambridge publishes its syllabuses on cambridgeinternational.org; a Salem student will often find an online specialist the simplest arrangement.
