What home tuition costs in Salem

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Tamil nadu state board home tutors by locality in Salem

Tamil Nadu State Board tutors in Salem: SSLC, +1 and +2, prepared from the Directorate's published papers

Salem students on the state syllabus face two public examinations that shape their school years: the SSLC in Class 10 and the Higher Secondary examination in Class 12, with Class 11 papers set in the same style. Both are conducted by the Directorate of Government Examinations, and its past papers, sample papers and notices are all published online, so State Board tuition can be planned from the real thing. Below we read those documents for Salem parents, from the SSLC papers to services after results, and show how tutors reach six localities in the east and south of the city. Always check details against dge.tn.gov.in.

Who sets and conducts the State Board papers?

Class 10 and Class 12 public examinations on the state syllabus are the Directorate of Government Examinations' core job, and it calls the resulting mark certificates a vital document for further study and for jobs. A single State Board of School Examinations has covered both levels since a 2011 government order joined the former secondary board and the former higher secondary board into one. The Directorate has seven regional offices, at Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Chennai, Cuddalore and Vellore, which move examination stationery, distribute funds for running the examinations and send out mark certificates.

What happens in an examination season?

Both public examinations have a March session and a June session on the Directorate's list. It describes a season's work in order: collecting candidate details from schools, setting up examination centres, printing and supplying question papers, appointing the officials who run each centre, setting up valuation centres and appointing examiners, then tabulating marks, releasing results and issuing certificates. Practical examinations come before the theory papers. The dates move each year: check the current timetable on dge.tn.gov.in, not an old circular or a forwarded message. For tuition, the lesson is to have practical records complete and practice done ahead of the practicals, and to treat the weeks before them as revision weeks.

Where the marks sit in SSLC maths and science

The March 2026 SSLC papers in the question bank were three-hour papers printed in a Tamil and English version, written in blue or black ink with diagrams in pencil.

March 2026 SSLC Mathematics and Science
SectionMathematics, 100 marksScience, 75 marks
Part I14 one-mark items12 one-mark items
Part IITen 2-mark answers from a longer list; one question compulsorySeven 2-mark answers; one compulsory
Part IIITen 5-mark answers; one compulsory; half the paperSeven 4-mark answers; one compulsory
Part IVTwo 8-mark questionsThree 7-mark answers, diagrams wherever needed

Half of the maths paper is in Part III, so a student must write ten complete 5-mark solutions neatly and at pace. The compulsory question in each set means no chapter can safely be skipped. In science, the three 7-mark answers carry 21 marks, so drawing textbook diagrams accurately from memory is worth regular practice. Subject help is on our Salem maths and science pages.

SSLC social science and English: two papers families underrate

Social science was a 100-mark paper with the same four-part frame as maths. Part III included a timeline, asking for five important events within a stated period, and a world map on which places had to be marked. Part IV had two questions of 8 marks, both offering a choice: an essay on a history topic, and an outline map of India or of Tamil Nadu with places to mark. Differently abled candidates could write short notes instead of marking the timeline and maps. Map work is easy marks for a student who has practised it, and a weekly map drill is a cheap habit for a tutor to build.

English, the Part II language, carried 100 marks. After 14 one-mark items came short answers on the prose and poetry lessons and a compulsory 2-mark task (in 2026, giving directions to someone). Part III asked for paragraph answers, rearranging sentences into order, practical writing tasks such as an advertisement, and lines quoted from memory. Part IV had two 8-mark tasks: a paragraph of about 150 words built from hints, and questions on a passage or a poem. Our English home tutors in Salem page covers this paper further.

The two shapes of Higher Secondary paper

The Higher Secondary course pairs a language (Part I) and English (Part II) with the student's chosen group of subjects. The March 2026 first-year papers show two shapes, each three hours long; the second-year papers in the bank follow the same pattern.

Higher Secondary paper shapes, March 2026 first-year set
ShapeExamplesLayout
90 marksMathematics; Business Mathematics and Statistics20 one-mark; seven 2-mark and seven 3-mark, each set with one compulsory question; seven 5-mark answers
70 marksPhysics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Botany, Zoology15 one-mark; six 2-mark and six 3-mark, again with one compulsory in each; five 5-mark answers
70 marks in two partsBiologyA Bio-Botany part and a Bio-Zoology part, each with eight one-mark, four 2-mark, three 3-mark and two 5-mark questions

When you request a tutor, be exact about two things. Business Mathematics and Statistics, a commerce paper, is not the science group's Mathematics. And name whether your child takes Biology or the Botany and Zoology pair. The 2025–26 timetable listed the +1 public examination for arrear candidates only, so ask the school how Class 11 is being assessed for your child's batch. For the science group, see our Salem physics, chemistry and biology tutor pages.

Using the question bank through the year

Online, the Directorate keeps SSLC, +1 and +2 papers from every March sitting from 2023 to 2026, plus the May 2022 and September 2021 sessions, and a separate page holds several sets of sample question papers for SSLC, +1 and +2. A simple plan uses them in three layers. During the year, the older sessions are cut into chapter-wise practice after each lesson. Midway, the sample papers are sat in full, with the tutor marking part by part. In the final weeks, the latest March paper, kept unseen until then, is sat as a timed mock.

Medium and language papers

Subject papers come in a Tamil and English version. The written answer should use the vocabulary of the textbook in your child's own medium. For the Part I language, the March 2026 SSLC set included papers in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic, French and Gujarati. Tell us the medium and the Part I language when you request a tutor. If engineering or medical entrances lie ahead, the paper-language question is discussed on our Salem JEE and NEET pages.

After the results

  • A second chance. Special supplementary examinations for Classes X and XII are held for students who did not pass in the March or April session, and since the June/July 2012 round the number of failed subjects does not limit who may sit them. The gap is short, so book tuition as soon as marks are out.
  • Checking a script. The Directorate provides a scanned copy of the answer script to candidates who ask, along with re-totalling and revaluation. Watch its portal for the notice for your examination.
  • Certificate services. The website explains migration certificates, duplicate certificates and the CCM certificate, with forms for SSLC, Higher Secondary, Matriculation and Anglo-Indian candidates, and offers online mark sheet verification.

Scholarship and other tests the Directorate runs

  • NMMS. Open to Class 8 pupils of State or Central Government schools and aided schools who satisfy its marks rule and family-income ceiling; those selected receive the scholarship through Classes 9 to 12.
  • TRUSTS. A talent search for rural Class 9 pupils whose family income is under the stated limit.
  • NTSE Level I. Taken by Class 10 pupils on State or Central boards; the Directorate conducts this first level for NCERT.
  • Also: the ESLC for private candidates and the Government Technical Examinations, at lower and higher grade.

Rules for each are set out in that year's notice on the portal. Earlier NMMS, NTSE and TRUST papers sit in the question bank, useful for reasoning practice with a maths tutor.

How State Board tutors reach six Salem localities

  • Shevapet (Ammapet and Shevapet): near the bazaar streets, with homes and shops side by side. Describe your lane by a shop sign, give the floor if you live above a shop, and consider a late-evening or Sunday-morning slot.
  • Gugai: near the Old Bus Stand, so tutors from much of the city can reach it on town routes, which widens the choice for +2 commerce or science subjects.
  • Kondalampatti (Kondalampatti and Seelanaickenpatti): on the Salem bypass; start directions from the roundabout and say which side you live on.
  • Seelanaickenpatti: a bypass junction of its own name; share a location link checked to open on your street.
  • Annathanapatti: grouped with Kitchipalayam by the city police; names nearby sound alike, so add both spellings.
  • Nethimedu: between Annathanapatti and Seelanaickenpatti; a tutor from either side is usually closest, with online lessons for a specialist subject.

For the SSLC, drawing work (constructions, graphs, science diagrams, maps) is a strong reason for a tutor at home. At +2, a weekly home visit plus an online session with the same tutor is a mix worth trying. Every locality is on the Salem home tutors page, and the Salem home tuition guide covers timing zone by zone.

Five checks in the free demo

  1. Recent State Board work. Ask which of SSLC, +2 science or +2 commerce the tutor has taught lately; each is its own job.
  2. A drawing task. Give the tutor a Part IV maths question or a social science map and watch it done against the clock.
  3. The medium. A Tamil-medium child needs answers written in the Tamil textbook's terms; ask for a sample.
  4. Compulsory questions. Ask how every chapter will be covered when each set has a question with no choice.
  5. Records. The tutor should guide and check practical records, never write them.

You get two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before booking; the first class is free, and so is switching tutor later.
